Sometimes I feel like a grumpy old lady before my time. Is it unreasonable to resent having paper money then a receipt dumped on your hand with all the coins on top. I have been left feeling a nuisance as I try and pour the coins into my wallet without dropping anything else I might be holding, whilst being stared at by the cashier and the next in queue who are waiting for me to get out of the way.

What happened to offering to put the receipt in the bag? And why can't notes be put between forefinger and thumb with the coins in the palm?

Should probably just try and chill...

if you count out the change they get pissed off at you wasting their time. if you don't count out the change they assume it's cos you can't count. if you put the receipt in the bag they kick off that they want it in their purse. if you ask them how they like things ie keep hanger/receipt in purse/notes after coins blah blah bloody blah you'll be there all damn day THEN they'll complain about the queue...

what about customers who only begin to look for money when asked scrabbling about in scabby purses.

puling out of date vouchers, wrinkled ripped notes , counting everything in 1 and 2p

items scanned and they stand there looking suprised and astonished if asked to pay. Oh gosh a shop - and pay. thats a suprise

or take a phone call in queue and dont take breath to get money ready.yakking away regardless of others

having worked in retail i saw the public can be quite horrid and rude too

I'm with trout - you must all have very organised purses. I close my hand, thereby folding notes, receipt and change together, squish into purse, and deal with it later. It's the Zen way.

I worked in a shop for years too- albeit years ago.
The general public can be vile to shop staff BUT I still can't stand the fact that I will always say 'hi' 'thanks' 'please' etc and will nearly always smile and yet still get ignored or grunted at.

I had shit customers but it didn't make me totally ignore the nice ones.

I hate it too.

And I hate the fact that the till just tells them how much to give you - I liked it when they counted it into your hand from the amount it cost up to the amount you gave....

But I'm a sad old bag and a grumpy old lady.

I worked on the checkouts and also reached the dizzy heights of training people on the checkouts too.

I always put the coins into the palm of the persons hand and then handed them the notes.

I told the trainees that this was how they should do it too.

It seemed like a middle ground between the tedious counting out every coin and the dumping it all in the hand method.

I hardly ever pay with cash any more, so that solves the problem!

I worked at ELC for 5 years, and have worked in pubs. I always handed the coins and notes seperately.

It doesn't take any extra time really, but TBH I never counted the change out for people.

TheHedgeWitch i work in a busy shop where we get a que out the door but still manage to put the coins in the customers hand first then hand them the note. It doesn't take any longer doing it that way, it's just a case of common sense really
