Sometimes I feel like a grumpy old lady before my time. Is it unreasonable to resent having paper money then a receipt dumped on your hand with all the coins on top. I have been left feeling a nuisance as I try and pour the coins into my wallet without dropping anything else I might be holding, whilst being stared at by the cashier and the next in queue who are waiting for me to get out of the way.

What happened to offering to put the receipt in the bag? And why can't notes be put between forefinger and thumb with the coins in the palm?

Should probably just try and chill...

Hecate,

I waited until she took a breath (which seemed to take ages), then I said ...
"excuse me, I need to go out to the car park so I can drive home and cook dinner for my husband and son. If you'll just ...."
and I shook free and scarpered, as she picked her chin off the floor

I laugh about it now, but it was horrid at the time, I'm sure the other woman still wakes sweating in the night about it.

I think this started when the assistants no longer had to work out your change by counting the coins then the notes up to the amount. Now the till tells them, say, £7.50, so they count out a fiver then the pound coins then the 50p, so it all comes in a precarious pile. Blame technology.

YANBU I hate this too - especially when there's also a receipt to deal with. Small thing in the grand scheme of things, yes, but one of those mildly irritating things that if there are enough of them added up over the course of a day turns me into a muttering bag lady.

ShrinkingViolet, that is just so creepy!!!

Katch, I think you're quite right.

It's also why sooooo few people are able to do any mental arithmetic.

creepy - too right! Plus you still had to do it to the sweaty-palmed, even though you knew you'd have to rush off and wash afterwards. Got into trouble a few times as management used to send in their mates as mystery shoppers to try and catch us out. I believe the whole thing stopped when we convinced a few of our regulars to write letters of complaint .

I hate this too - but the reason they put the coins on top of the notes is so you can check you've been given the right amount.

I like to check my change too...and leaving the receipt in the bag is never a good thing imo, because if you lost/had stolen the goods with receipt in it, then they could possibly go get a refund/gift voucher!
When I worked in retail, I always gave everyone the respect they deserved, counted their change out to them and offered my help to those who may have needed it. I just think times have changed and so have people. Sad really...

My Ds last year went to pay for something for me in M&S, I was stood nearby. He was short changed by £1.00. Luckily, Ds spotted the deficit and pointed it out to the youth behind the till . 9yo(at the time)Ds is tall for his age, but obviously not daft. Why can't they count out the change anymore? just lazy!

OH YES!! Absolutely agree. I thought it was just me cos every time I moan to DP about it he rolls his eyes (a speciality of his). Coins on top of notes is not too bad cos it's all going in your purse and you can check the change, it's coins on top of receipts that drives me mad!

YANBU - I absolutely hate hate hate this. Can't do anything because of the bloody coins all over the notes so somehow got to figure out how to get the coins back in my purse without them falling all over the floor. Bastards. Will try whipping my hand away like themoon66 says. Or maybe I'll give them back the coins whilst I put the notes away. That'll piss them off.

YA definitely NBA. It is just so stupid. I'm always dropping "hidden" change on the floor. This morning, after dropping the change on the floor, I glared at the man behind the counter, and he apologized.

Glad I got some support on this!
I'm going to try themoon66's idea too. Thanks.

my DS2 was at a nursery for children with autism.
After spending all day trying to get samll ones to make eye contact and socially engage the senior teacher was frequently found in the local shops bending down until she got eye contact with till staff and then bellowing "well done - good looking at me!!!!" with a huge thumbs up.

I just squash it all in my purse..can't say it particularly bothers me
Do you have a very small well organised purse perhaps?. You need a big mahoosive ugly purse ..then problem is sorted

LOL pagwatch.

Troutpout - you are spot on. I used to have a big wallet crammed with everything but DH got pissed off because he always ended up with it in his pocket when we were out - not big handbag person. Now have tiny thing bought in US made to fit dollars not pounds.

You would like me serving you then, i always put the coins in the customers hands first then give them the note. It's just something i have always done.

OMG YANBU!

There's a facebook group about this that I joined called "ARGH stop putting the coins on top of the receipt!"

It has 830 members, so you're definately not alone.

I worked in HMV for a while.

I always gave the change first and held on to any notes/receipts until the customer had dealt with the coins.

What really pissed me off though, and it happened all the time, was customers chucking their money onto the counter instead of handing it to me. I'd stick my hand right out and they chuck everything underneath! Grrr...

And customers who wanted a silly little plastic bag to put their one little item in, despite carrying a thousand other bags. I would say "do you need a bag?" while eyeing their handfulls.
