I love soup, especailly in the winter.

and with a warm crusty roll...........

I want to eat it when eating out, but I like to break up my roll into pieces and drop it all into my soup and then eat it.

would I be stared at and frowned on??? In fact, is it a crime for the food police to even suggest doing such a thing????

((and please don;t suggest croutons......I have ishoos with croutons))

I wouldn't give a shit tbh.
As long as you are not licking the bowl clean I wouldn't care.

psychomum5 · 17/09/2008 13:39

bouncingturtle, nope, I do not lick my bowl clean.

soren, yes, others being rude about it are far worse.

Soup manners are a little strange though. My grandparents were very very formal. Linen napkins in silver rings at every meal (including breakfast) formal. Fruit knives and forks formal - my grandfather ate apples with a knife and fork!

They had soup every evening (different soup every day always homemade by my grandmother). And my grandfather always slurped. Yuk! Horrible! (I have to admit I have a bit of a thing about food noises though). And tilted the soup bowl to one side to get the last bits (with his spoon naturally). I don't think he tilted the bowl towards him though, probably to one side.

Re the bread thing, I don't suppose that would be a big deal. I like to dip bread into my soup, but would probably only do that at home or somewhere fairly low class I guess. I am sure if you did it in a refined manner it would be just fine. Probably no one would notice anyway, unless you did it in an exhibitionist type way. There is a Seinfeld episode where one of the main characters eats a Mars bar with a knife and fork, and by the end of the episode everyone is doing it, so why not be a trend setter!

O, and visit New England, soup in a bread bowl (boule) is all the rage there.

suey2 · 17/09/2008 13:51

ha same soren!
I was wiping up the last bit of fried egg when staying with a mate's family when i was at uni. cue 'oh my dear, where DID you go to school' from a freind of her father's.

To the OP IMO not the done thing, but much worse for someone to comment about it

loobeylou · 17/09/2008 13:53

I always cringe when DH orders soup, not that he slurps or eats from the bowl, but when the waitress asks if all is well with our meal he always says "souper" and thinks its still funny after 14 years of me telling him its not.
Brainwave!! perhaps if next time I have soup too and break up my roll into it and slurp loudly, he will never order soup again........?!

I don't think you are BU though, you pay you eat it how you like, but I would draw the line at using a straw mind you

TrinityRhino · 17/09/2008 13:56

I'm with you psycho

In fact I'll splash £20 eah on some posh soup in some weird posh place and we'll both do the bread in soup thing

oh and definitely you need to wipe the bowl out with the bread

TrinityRhino · 17/09/2008 13:57

loobeylou

that made me chuckle out loud

souper......lol

loobeylou · 17/09/2008 13:59

Oh yes, gravy and bread after sunday lunch, yummy (are you a northerner?, methinks it might be a regional thing like having the yorkshires and gravy BEFORE the main dinner to fill you up & make the meat go further)

loobeylou · 17/09/2008 14:00

trinity - agreed, it might have been amusing THE FIRST TIME I heard it, but the novelty wears off

DontCallMeBaby · 17/09/2008 14:03

You weirdo, why would you want to take a 'warm, crusty roll' (yum) and turn it into a load of soggy soup-soaked pap (boak)?

Ahem, just something I've been meaning to ask DH for the last eleven years or so, but can't be bothered to deal with the resultant fight.

I dip bread in soup though, and I'd dip bread in soup regardless of poshness of venue.

DaphneMoon · 17/09/2008 14:11

Crisps are nice dropped in soup as long as you drop and eat, not drop leave and eat otherwise they go a bit soggy and sink.

psychomum5 · 17/09/2008 14:18

trinity, you have a date.

In France they dip bread in everything! - soup, hot chocolate at breakfast - whatever. And they're supposed to know what's what where food is concerned, so are we just a bit too uptight. BTW I remember reading about someone who went to a formal dinner attended by the royal family, and was terrified of their table manners not being up to scratch. Part way through the meal they glanced up and there was Princess Diana (it was some time ago obviously)eating her main course just with a fork. Maybe the whole table etiquette thing is just a touch 'middle class'.

monkeymagic · 17/09/2008 14:44

Oh gawd that's exactly how my Grandad used to eat soup - ripped up bits of bread into it until it was all soggy mush. It always gave me the dry heaves. Yuk yuk yuk.

Though worse was the student I shared a house with who insisted on eating his soup out of the pan, because it saved on washing up.

Don't do it Psychomum, people will stare and point. Or in the modern version of staring and pointing, they'll start a thread on MN about you.

Oblomov · 17/09/2008 14:45

suey2 - ooh yes, can't have a fried egg without wiping the plate with bread afterwards. loobeylou - I'm from Manchester

Am I the only one who likes bits of cheese in soup? We always have bread and cheese with soup - this comes from eating MIL's home made cawl - a Welsh sort of soup/almost stew - which she always serves with crusty bread and cheese ("the Welsh way" apparently). So ds1, when we have soup at home, always insists we have it "the Welsh way" too. And I discovered if you break off little bits of cheese and drop them in your soup they go all melty and yummy. Mmmmmm.

debzmb62 · 17/09/2008 17:14

as long as its not slurping all over the place do what you want its your money your spending eat how you want i,m a dunker and i,ll dunk if i want !! be yourself for you no-one else

SaintGeorge · 17/09/2008 17:21

Soren, come for a meal at our house, you would love it

Yorkshire puds (with onion in the batter) and gravy before the main course.

Thick slice of bread to soak up the bits at the end.

Cheese a must in tomato soup, cheese covered bread on top of onion soup grilled until bubbling (yum).

ethanchristopher · 17/09/2008 17:27

i have never watched somebody do that in a resturaunt and

a) been bothered by it
b) noticed at all

infact, youve paid for it

eat it how you want!

Honestly, if people are bothered because you break your bread and eat it from your soup bowl just ignore them.

Cryptoprocta · 17/09/2008 18:40

I had a friend who went to his girlfriend's family's house for tea - drinky tea not a meal. He was happily dipping Rich Tea biccies, when he looked up to see the family staring at him in in utter horror. And he was from quite a well to do family himself!

ruddynorah · 17/09/2008 18:48

i do the dipping my croissant in my hot chocolate thing where ever i go. i ask for my hot chocolate in a bowl so i can do it properly.
