I am at work in the bookshop at the moment and we have just had a delivery of an auto-biography of JADE GOODY ffs, complete with fears about losing her hair etc. It seems to have been ghostwritten by some hack from Heat magazine, but even so, wouldn't you want to spend time quietly with your family and concentrate on getting well after a cancer diagnosis? All the sleb mags are full of her "exclusive" interviews and pics though, and it seems like one huge money-making opportunity. What is this - well you've seen my kebab, now pay to read about my internal organs ???? I think it's in very poor taste, AIBU?

"people say it's her own fault"

Of course it is her own fault. How many people in the world are stupid enough to ignore letters from the doctor saying 'you have precancerous cells that need to be treated'???

CoteDAzur · 16/09/2008 16:05

"they made have been lying about being virgins"

You mean nobody looked up between their legs? How on earth were they even diagnosed?

i dont know anything about her at all

it always surprises me that whenever people complain about celebrities' lives and behaviour they always seem to know all the minutiae

so presumably they take a great interest

so it is the nay sayers who are actually providing the cash that keeps the machine going

CoteDAzur · 16/09/2008 16:07

She said so herself. Look it up in Google.

mayorquimby · 16/09/2008 16:07

"Sorry, you obviously thought she was disgusting before this, and the cancer hasn't changed your view
"

pretty much.her having cancer has had no impact on my opinion of her, i'm a bit at those suggesting it is somehow her fault though.

her pr media machine trying to milk every last bit of sympathy to resurect her career after it had become virtually non-existent following her very public racism does leave a bit of a sour taste.

expatinscotland · 16/09/2008 16:08

'You mean nobody looked up between their legs? How on earth were they even diagnosed?'

Eh?

it's possible for a virgin not to have a hymen.

it's possible for a virgin to have been penetrated with things other than a man's penis and still be considered a virgin.

therefore, it's possible for a virgin to have a smear test that comes up abnormal and a colpo/biopsy and still be someone who hasn't been penetrated by a man's penis.

so, i'm not quite sure what you're getting at but yes, someone can lie about being a virgin or even be on and have HPV if they got up to a lot.

nooka · 16/09/2008 16:08

Yes, nuns are unlikely to get cervical cancer, but interestedly more likely to get breast cancer. I think that's more to do with relatively earlier pregnancies being a protective factor. Not sure, my epidemiology was a long time ago now. Actually I think that someone young who clearly many people do identify with (God help us) is useful in terms of PR in persuading people to have their smears done, who might otherwise think that would never happen to me.

I don't see any reason why I should feel solidarity with someone whose values I do not share, just because we both happen to be women who have had children. I can feel sympathy with anyone going through cancer treatment, because chemo etc are nasty, but further than that, no really why should I? I would feel the same sympathy towards a childless man going through the same thing.

nooka · 16/09/2008 16:12

I have no sympathy for someone on their "last 160k" many many people never in their lives have that much money. Outgoings of 12k a month - why? She was incredibly lucky to have made the career she did, and basically threw that away with some very very stupid and unpleasant behaviour. Sympathetic I am not!

CoteDAzur · 16/09/2008 16:13

Sorry to be short, I didn't mean to be rude. DD was calling from toilet and it sounded like an emergency

2beornot2be · 16/09/2008 16:17

So nooka because of a few comments that were made whilst on a show which is edited which obv the person who she made them comments towards have clearly forgiven her you can't show a young woman with two young boys a little bit of compassion or sympathy for her? She is a young woman that has just gone thru most women's nightmares and un lucky for her she is in the public eye so yes the whole of the uk will know about her saga but the only reason she is in the public eye is because we put her there.

cocolepew · 16/09/2008 16:17

Jade did an interview with Heat and in said she got 4 letters from the hospital that she didn't open, because she knew they were checking her for cancer and she "didn't want to know".

fedupandisolated · 16/09/2008 16:18

Poor Jade, manipulated and controlled every step of the way.

"It's your duty to ......" probably said at every turn.

Jade made a career out of her appearance in BB and has been manipulated ever since - right down to the whole horrific "let's give her the news in the diary room stunt".

The liklihood is that she probably doesn't feel she has been manipulated (and she has made an awful lot of money from her celebrity status in the past).

How dreadful though to have cancer and to feel you HAVE to be open to the whole nation about it. Jade will have been paid for this book - but believe me - a whole lot of other people will have made money too. I don't see them getting a slagging off though.

expatinscotland · 16/09/2008 16:20

's okay, my daughters are currently demolishing a bunch of paints, paintbrushes and salt dough ornaments.

expatinscotland · 16/09/2008 16:20

fedup, jade is an adult.

if she's been manipulated for pay, it's not entirely without her consent.

cocolepew · 16/09/2008 16:21

I don't care whether she has a book out or not. There's a stack of books published every week and the majority wouldn't interest me. Jade does have fans and they are the people who buy her books.

Remotew · 16/09/2008 16:21

So her financial situtation needs replenishing because she was down to her last 160K and has outgoings of 12k per month. Time to cut the outgoings, get back into the real world. Not whine about it on TV.

Sorry I know she is ill and I do feel for anyone going through cancer treatment.

Unless you never watch TV or look at the headlines on the internet sites its very difficult not to know much about Jade Goody. She has exposed her life on two BB's so far. The problem with instant celebrity is that there is no talent to sell except for human interest books, magazines. She blew it on Celeb BB which was unfortunate as she was one of the most sucessful and kept it up much longer than most.

I also don't have a sisterhood gene.

CoteDAzur · 16/09/2008 16:25

expat - So none of these 'virgins' who had HPV/cervical cancer actually had hymens?

Sure, it is theoretically possible, but when was a virgin (a real one, not someone who has been prodded with various things as you suggest) diagnosed with cervical cancer?

If that were a real possibility, would you not agree that the recommendation to start smear tests would not be "3 years after your first sexual intercourse" but "as soon as you have first sexual intercourse, since you may have contracted HPV before having sex"?

nooka · 16/09/2008 16:26

No I really couldn't care less about her before the cancer thing, and have no more than general feelings of poor her she has cancer that I would for anyone in a similar situation. I certainly don't feel complicit in "putting her in the public eye". I have no idea why she has celebrity status, as she has done nothing of any value. Many many people get cervical cancer, and she has no more "right" to my compassion than any of them. Certainly not because she has screwed up a "career" that I think is an ugly judgement of the values that our society seems keen to embrace at the moment.

cupsoftea · 16/09/2008 16:27

Hope she gets better - what a terrible thing to have.

fedupandisolated · 16/09/2008 16:29

Oh I realise she's an adult expat - but she's an adult who is the product of an abusive childhood so may not make the most sensible decisions at times. Personally I think she was always swept along by all this BB stuff. Everyone makes money from her and she makes money too.

Agree that she didn't have to consent to all this though.

nooka · 16/09/2008 16:30

Smear tests are recommended to everyone over 25. Nothing about when you started sex. This is from the Screening programme website:

Cervical cancer is rare in women under 20. Teenagers' bodies, particularly the cervix, are still developing, which means young women may get an abnormal result when there is nothing wrong. This could lead to unnecessary treatment so screening young women might do more harm than good.

Under the age of 25 years, invasive cancer is extremely rare, but changes in the cervix are common. Although lesions treated in very young women may prevent cancers from developing many years later, the evidence suggests that screening could start at age 25. Lesions that are destined to progress will still be screen-detectable and those that would regress will no longer be a source of anxiety. Younger women will not have to undergo unnecessary investigations and treatments.

And

"...if a woman has never been sexually active with a man, then the research evidence shows that her chance of developing cervical cancer is very low indeed. We do not say no risk, only very low risk. In these circumstances, a woman might choose to decline the invitation for cervical screening on this occasion. If a woman is not currently sexually active but has had male partners in the past, then we would recommend that she continues screening.

zippitippitoes · 16/09/2008 16:32

i still dont see why she shouldnt make money from telling her story

no one has to buy it

and i dont avoid knowing about her

i just dont watch programmes on her or look at celeb websites

so i simply know nothing about her

LittleBella · 16/09/2008 16:33

D'you feel disgusted by Ruth Picardie and John Diamond as well?

They also wrote about their cancer. So did Dennis Potter. So have lots of people.
