yabu. it's not that bad - because at least they are sensible enough as names, it's just the associations with brands that make you a bit . Another unfortunate combination of perfectly acceptable names - sam and ella - remind anyone of food poisoning?

Upwind · 13/09/2008 08:39

mrshall - funnier still is that young Drew Peacock went on to become the Australian opposition leader

Cammelia · 13/09/2008 08:59

I'm sure that Registrars in England can refuse to register certain "names" as well.

hippipotami · 13/09/2008 09:03

I came across a Freddie Mercury as first adn middle names last term. Can't remember the surname. Poor boy was sitting his GCSE's and his full name was printed on every answer booklet.

Tittybangbang · 13/09/2008 09:08

Oh we get loads of good names round our way. There's a Shadene in my dd's class - pronounced 'Chardonnay'! And another 'Chardonnay' in reception. Also got two 'Rio's', two 'Jamelia's' and a Beyonce.

Margo, I fully expected you to say he's tall, black and chrome and is a little bit of a quick boil! . Seriously though, I'm not on the market so to speak. Not yet anyway. Keep in touch though, as you never know!

Grumpalina · 13/09/2008 10:00

In my job I have come across siblings as follows:

Tia Maria
Bailey and Chardonnay

I kid you not!!!

solo · 13/09/2008 10:12

Bailey I quite like(I know a dog called Bailey), but the others are very erm...not for me!

while we are on the theme of peculiar names.I knew a guy who had endless stick for his name.....Miles Long....he is in his 40's now and his parents still cant see anything wrong in it....can you imagine the chat up lines....Hi, I'm Miles Long.............I would wet myself

There is also a lady in our local asda called Jo King....I wonder how many times she has had people go up to her and say you must be Jo King!!

then there was the this morning poll where they found someone called Hugh Janus........... I kid you not!!!!

solo. It wasn't the fact he was called Bailey it was the fact that all child's names were drinks related!!!

strummer · 13/09/2008 10:41

For years dh was under the impression that Beyonce was pronounced Bouncey.

solo · 13/09/2008 10:50

Yeah I know, but at least Bailey is one that almost anyone could live with, not to mention a nice young lady wouldn't mind dating etc...can you imagine your son coming home, hand in hand with Tia Maria or Chardonnay? I'd have to have serious chat with him

StealthPolarBear · 13/09/2008 10:56

lol at Drew Peacock

loobeylou · 13/09/2008 11:04

sister is a registrar - they are not allowed to question any name, must ask if the child is a girl or boy regardless of what their name is and must ask for the parents spelling of the name, not make assumptions.

she once had a couple come in with a little girl called Kyrie Eleison, which really shocked her, she asked for the spelling, said thats an unusual name etc etc (trying not to die laughing). They said they had heard it in a song and thought it was so lovely they had copied the spelling from the CD box. Its a pity they did not do a google to find out the meaning
Kyrie Eleison is Greek for "Christ have mercy"

quite fitting really!!!

Vulgar · 13/09/2008 11:36

I know a registrar refused to register a child "Silly Cow" 8 years ago.

Thank goodness is what I say.

solo · 13/09/2008 11:40

Why are some parents so cruel?

bloomingfedup · 13/09/2008 12:21

The parents must hate the kid to try and call it silly cow - that is quite sad really.
