Firstly tell me if you think I am being unreasonable and then help me write a complaint letter, I am so frigging incensed I can't think straight

Went to Asda to get a globe (on special if you want one) and they have all the Halloween stuff out. DD is 3 and seems to be quite sensitive atm so I avoided going near it all and went to go get some milk

Walked around the corner and straight into a 6ft odd animated monster/vampire thing that they had nowhere near the Halloween stuff just randomly at the end of the milk aisle . I am not exaggerating when I say this thing looked so bloody real and its eyes were flicking back and forward it was horrible. DD screamed and I mean bloody screamed, I picked her up and she wet herself , she has been dry for over well over 9mths odd.

An employee came over and said 'so sorry that is the second child in 10 mins to scream at that thing'. DD was clinging on to me and asking if it could walk and it was going to get her. So I went to try to get out of the store and she was so upset, saying she could hear it coming.

All day she has been asking me over and over where it is is it still in the shop can it drive a car, can it walk

So AIBU to think that given that most of their customers in the daytime have preschool children that they should have thought slightly about scaring the frigging wits out of them.

I did complain to the cs people but DD was screaming so much we had to leave. They just said oh yeah we'll tell the manager

watsthestory - where on earth do your children think their comes from??

i grew up on a farm. and my kids are brought up same as me. my 2.7yo is under no illusion that any cute chicken/pig/cow, etc he eats.

he even seen a pig at my inlaws (italy) going from field to plate at every stage last year. he was very impressed. he loved all the different equipments involved.

my children dont grow up on a farm either. they visit in laws a couple of times a year.

what i'm trying to say (badly) is that perhaps your children wouldn't be scared if they knew the truth. there's so many things in this day and age for them to be scared of already. never mind adding something thats an everyday thing like food source scaring them.

why did you not explain it had apple in its mouth to make it taste better.AS ITS TO BE EATEN.

and FWIW, not suprised the butcher said that. you were insulting his trade by making it out to be something false/scary. there's nothing more natural to most people than eating meat that has been prepared expertly by a skilled proffessional.

i saw this 6ft butler thing in the entrance of kirklees light railway ticket office. as we went in, last sunday, i though oh shite dd will go ballistic, she's 2.4. she saw it and said ooooh can i touch it, ran up, felt his hand and squealed with delight.

she then spotted a table of 'dead' arms, legs, skulls etc and had a good rummage. this was all to advertise a halloween haunted train ride.

anyway, yesterday me and dh took her to asda and lo and behold i say to dh my god there's that scary man they had at the railway. again dd is delighted and runs up to touch him. dh and me were freaked, she loved it.

my point? i dunno, but dd liked it.

allgonebellyup · 24/09/2008 18:37

sounds quite amusing to me!

gibba8 · 24/09/2008 18:55

My 4 year old was also scared when she saw this in asda and she is not usually scared of anything but has now taken a real dislike to anything related to halloween.

Twelvelegs · 24/09/2008 18:57

YABU to go to Asda, it's a shithole.

hattyyellow · 24/09/2008 19:11

The poor little thing! I would be fuming too. I'd try and get through to Head Office and shout at them. Hope she's okay now.

Stefka · 24/09/2008 19:26

YANBU! Poor wee thing - that's so horrible. I hope she is feeling better now.

DoubleBluff · 24/09/2008 19:29

Am trying to be sympathetic but this whole thread has made me laugh. Sorry!

justaflyingvisit · 24/09/2008 22:23

asda may well be a shit hole but it is consitently about 20% cheaper than tesco in my experience, so i suffer the hell hole i swore never to enter again. Im wondering if i could feign a panic attack, fall backwards into the oranges and sue for post traumatic stress disorder

TwoIfBySea · 24/09/2008 22:28

YANBU at all! There is one in our ASDA and dts (age 6 1/2) walked past it as it moved, they nearly crapped themselves and they are not easily frightened. I thought it was someone dressed up, creepy as hell. The kids gathered round it and the younger ones, even though at that point they knew what it was, were still scared.

minorbird · 24/09/2008 22:30

I ant been to asda since reading this thread! Thanks to the threat of 6ft monsters with googly eyes - Morrissons has been getting my custom.

blueskythinker · 24/09/2008 23:17

Below is my my letter of complaint. Does anyone have any media contacts who can raise this at a national level?

I visited the Dundonald, Belfast store last Thursday with my 3 year old daughter. There was a 6 ft halloween figure which really frightened her - we didn't even walk down the halloween aisle, she viewed it from the end of the aisle, and reacted really strongly. I would not describe her as a timid child.

She has had nightmares ever since, and has talked about the 'scary man in Asda'. (even I found the figure particularly disturbing)

I phoned the manager, and expressed my concerns, that this is not an appropriate item to have on sale in a family supermarket. He was not interested, and stated that displays are dictated at head office level, and that 1 complaint will not make any difference.

Unless I have assurances that this item is removed from the store, and that my concerns are taken seriously, I will not be shopping at Asda again.

I would be grateful for your attention.

ShyBaby · 24/09/2008 23:36

Actually I was quite surprised at the Asda butler.

He is not 6ft for starters. Im 5ft 4 and hes about the same (maybe a tad shorter). he is green and creepy. If you walk past, his eyes move and his chest puffs out a little. If you talk about him he turns to look at you .

My ds has always been scared of his own shadow. He laughed.

Dd laughed too. She's absolutely terrified of Pudsey bear.

(We then walked past him several times in a juvenile fashion to test out his sensors with the eye movements, he scored tops but I wouldn't pay £60 for him thanks).

But he was at the end of the Halloween aisle so not too much of a shock.

carmenelectra · 25/09/2008 00:16

I saw him a couple of days ago in our Asda. Not realy scary i dont think, bit weird though! He was by all the Halloween stuff. My ds2 aged one loved him(and all the Halloween stuff) and even my scaredy cat nephew aged 3 wasnt bothered and anything scares him!

I might have been spooked if he was randomly placed somewhere else in the shop but not enough to complain. I would just tell my child that it was pretend etc. There are worse things around than that

colacubes · 25/09/2008 00:20

Oh my dd is 2.5 yrs and loves the scary man, goes straight for him when we go in, infact calls him the scary man then does an impression.
