Firstly tell me if you think I am being unreasonable and then help me write a complaint letter, I am so frigging incensed I can't think straight

Went to Asda to get a globe (on special if you want one) and they have all the Halloween stuff out. DD is 3 and seems to be quite sensitive atm so I avoided going near it all and went to go get some milk

Walked around the corner and straight into a 6ft odd animated monster/vampire thing that they had nowhere near the Halloween stuff just randomly at the end of the milk aisle . I am not exaggerating when I say this thing looked so bloody real and its eyes were flicking back and forward it was horrible. DD screamed and I mean bloody screamed, I picked her up and she wet herself , she has been dry for over well over 9mths odd.

An employee came over and said 'so sorry that is the second child in 10 mins to scream at that thing'. DD was clinging on to me and asking if it could walk and it was going to get her. So I went to try to get out of the store and she was so upset, saying she could hear it coming.

All day she has been asking me over and over where it is is it still in the shop can it drive a car, can it walk

So AIBU to think that given that most of their customers in the daytime have preschool children that they should have thought slightly about scaring the frigging wits out of them.

I did complain to the cs people but DD was screaming so much we had to leave. They just said oh yeah we'll tell the manager

yanbu, that's just horrible. Hope your dd feels better soon.

MorningTownRide · 11/09/2008 13:44

Like OliveOil, I saw the hand in the bowl.

It made me bloody jump. DD was fascinated!

But, it was in the clothes aisle/ area!!

YANBU - keep it all in one aisle so it can be avoided.

theSuburbanDryad · 11/09/2008 13:47

It should definitely all be in one place! Could give someone a heart attack!

What are you doing on an AIBU thread Cod?!

GrimmaTheNome · 11/09/2008 13:54

As I've not yet seen this thing, I won't make the complaint myself but heres their
email link:

www.asda.co.uk/corp/customer_service/contact_us.html

Why don't you mail them a link to this thread so they can see at a high level they need to give all their store managers some guidance?

AnAngelWithin · 11/09/2008 14:03

i sodding hate halloween at the best of times. ring the store and complain. write to head office as well. your poor dd. is she ok now? bless her heart for you

MadamAnt · 11/09/2008 14:06

Your poor DD! I would phone and ask to speak to the manager, just to make sure the message gets through.

I saw this 6ft 'Frankenstein Butler" thing in Asda yesterday (possibly the same thing you're on about) and I jumped when I walked past it and it moved it towered over me and its eyes where so bloody realistic, I nearly had a heart attack. Can't imagine how frightning something like that would be to a child.

After the initial shock I looked at the price tag and it was £60, If I had the money I would have bought it was my 7 year old DS, he LOVES stuff like that.

(But yes, Asda should have more sense than to just leave it stood there looking threatning).

sherby · 11/09/2008 15:15

ahh I didn't know it was for sale

Sycamoretree · 11/09/2008 15:26

Write to them, in a really huffy, particularly PFB'ish manner, because at the very least you want losts of vouchers for free food to make up for the distress your daughter experienced.

Just classic error made by someone who obviously doesn't have children. It obviously didn't occur to them.

Lazarou · 11/09/2008 15:29

I once donned a halloween mask in tesco and scared the shit out of my niece. Oh the screaming and my sister asking 'why?!'

he he he........

2shoes · 11/09/2008 15:42

yanbu
they have one in our asda and it is is freaky.
It made me go yikes.
must be very scarey for a little person.
halloween is not for about 6 weeks ffs

MollyCherry · 11/09/2008 15:50

They've got the same thing in our Asda in the CD department. Who cares what they think - you are well within your rights to complain. I'm going back to ours to have a rant tomorrow as they've cocked up the photo on my DD's birthday cake.

Doodle2U · 11/09/2008 15:55

Poor little girl

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 11/09/2008 16:47

I had a similar problem in Matalan this week - they had an enormous terrifying witch thing on the counter at the balloon section and my dd (2.5) clung to me screaming as she was really scared. We then had to go and pay for the rest of our shopping at the main tills and there were loads more of these witches and scary ghoul things - and let's face it, in Matalan you're going to be queuing for at least 10 mins as they never have enough staff. Poor old dd . I don't object to Halloween per se but it does seem that the decorations are getting more and more life-size and 'realistic' (realistic is not the word but you know what I mean). I'm dreading my next trip to ASda and is sounds like they have this monster thing in all the stores.

citronella · 11/09/2008 16:56

Aw your poor DD - she must be traumatised!! YANBU have you called them yet?

(Hello Anniemac )

ethanchristopher · 11/09/2008 22:52

may i complain to them about the fact that halloween is well over one month away and they shouldnt have the friggin things up now!

especially christmas displays at my local tesco

BibiThree · 11/09/2008 23:04

As the mother of a sensitive dd I completely sympathise. YANBU. My dd would probably wet herself too. Completely irresponsible imo. Write and complain.

babbi · 11/09/2008 23:45

YANBU my DD (3) would never set foot in Asda again .She would scream the place down.
I will ensure I don`t take DD until after Halloween as I just know it would be horrific drama.
She saw a similar thing on holiday 18 months ago (only 18 months hersself then) and she still talks about not wanting to go back there .

TheSD makes an excellent point. It's going to be f-ing GREAT publicity when the first old dear who has forgotten her angina pills expires in the breakfast cereal aisle.

What a stupid, stupid idea. I would have dumped my trolley and gone to Sainsbury's.

superlager · 12/09/2008 09:28

Try to explain to your daughter about halloween, maybe get her a book on it and show her the pictures. explain about costumes and things like that. life can be frightening at times and scary things will happen i.e. barking dogs, people shouting in the street, alarms going off unexpectedly. we need to be able to deal with these shocks on a daily basis.

I admit that it's a shame your daughter got such a scare, but it'll happen again and again - make light of it and don't fuel her fears.

SunshineSmith · 12/09/2008 09:34

Asda as a whole freaks me out... i go in and I want to scream
