In the news today. She claims that the health trust took an unnecessarily long time to ascertain that the fertility problem was with her DH, by which time her own eggs were too old. She was therefore given donated eggs, and is now pregnant with a baby boy. So, if she wins her case, and her health trust pays out, how many other women will be denied IVF treatment at all due to lack of funds.

Crunchie - you could look at IVF as more children being born, therefore more people contributing to the NHS pot of money, therefore more money avaiable for treatment.

Is the only way of making a state organisation to 'sit up and pay attention' to take a load of money away from it to give to a few individuals? No. It's crude and unhelpful.

If the money was taken from one NHS department and given to another (eg SCBU), it would still be crude but at least taxes wouldn't be poured into one bank account for little reason. The money would carry on helping to save lives.

The NHS funding for ivf is pretty limited. I don't think it features in preventing cancer patients getting their drugs tbh. Unfortunately ivf always seems to be the procedure that comes under attack as unnecessary.

The trust does sounds as if its been pretty negligent. Making people wait 6 years for fertility treatment doesn't make clinical sense, never mind anything else.

It's a while since I was a Senior Manager in the NHS (thank God) but from what I recall, each Trust did pay a premium to cover for clinical negligence claims etc, so there was insurance. What was it called CMST or something (I dunno, I've blocked most of it out like a bad dream ).....
