i'm the wrong person to answer, I love books!

lilolilmanchester · 25/08/2008 22:54

Which books did you buy and how much did you spend? Can you afford them? If so, don't worry about it. If you can't then you need to think twice.

MaureenMLove · 25/08/2008 22:55

Books are always an investment IMO! Were they classics that will last forever?

3andnomore · 25/08/2008 22:57

well...I couldn't really say...as I just spend £140 today on 18 Books....3 were Textbooks for the Course I am starting in September and the rest were biography kind of books on the adviced reading list...so, I have an excuse...
fwiw...I don't think one can ever have to many books, and as for pending to much....only if you didn't get the best dea, imo

lovecamping · 25/08/2008 22:59

there are a few books to keep the kids amused on a 4 hour flight (rather than buy them at the airport), a couple for DH, then each dc has a couple of books each.

we can afford it but we could also spend the money on something else.

i just love books and we do spend lots of time reading/sticker books ... although dd1 is reluctant to read to me!!

check out the bookpeople if that isn't where you ordered your books from - they are so reasonable.

Hang on one cotton picking second then -

You are guilty for buying your children books - these magical things that will teach them about life, humanity, help them to develop their literacy skills which in the long term will enable them to get good jobs, make their own decisions in life be liberated and learned???

What you should be guilty about is NOT buying yourself a few books too - because how are you going to model good literacy to your children without a few great reads by your bedside table or in your handbag????!!!!????

Sorry if that came out too harshly!!!!

I just wanted you to know you should be PROUD not guilty!!!! And know you should have bought yourself a few good books too!!!!

lovecamping · 25/08/2008 23:28

thank you very much teafortwo. i'm am gutted to not have brought anything for myself!!

what books do you suggest for good reading teafortwo?

Hedgewitch - my dad will vouch that there is such a thing as spending too much money on books - because my mum collects Victorian bookbindings, with gold tooling, vellum pages, beautiful Morocco calfskin leather, etc, etc.

But if it's books for actual reading, definitely a good role model for your kids!
Admittedly I need to learn to exit an Oxfam Bookshop with fewer books than I go in with...

BlackEyedDog · 25/08/2008 23:36

buying books is my one vice.

Oh all right it isn't. But however skint I am I never feel bad spending our money on books.

teafortwo · 25/08/2008 23:45

ha ha ha - I was a bit scared of offending you when I pressed 'post' so I am glad for your positive post back, lovecamping!! [requests a mn relieved smiley]

We might not have the same tastes in fiction but I can tell you a few books that I love...

I just finished this it is so so good!!!!

This one is strange, sad and rather lovely.

Ermmm.... I can keep going if you like them so far but they might just sound a bit mushy to you - I have a very feminine taste in literature! TheHedgewitch maybe you have a few titles to add?

This is really a lovely novel it sort of stays with you for ages afterwards. A few weeks ago I bought crossing to safety because I was missing Stegner's style so much!

claudiaschiffer · 25/08/2008 23:58

stern< Never feel guilty about buying books. Books are magical and fab and worth every penny.

To sound a bit of a ponce for a moment but a love of reading is such a fabulous gift to give your dc's. Teafortwo is right.

teafortwo · 26/08/2008 00:02

claudiashiffer can you think of any books lovecamping should have bought for herself?

claudiaschiffer · 26/08/2008 00:10

hmmm let me think . . .

I loved Julian Fellows book SNOBS

www.amazon.co.uk/Snobs-novel-Novel-Julian-Fellowes/dp/0753820099/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8& s=books&qid=1219705670&sr=1-2

Really funny and about the English class system.

I am currently reading Eat, Pray, Love which is great but haven't finished it yet so it may all turn to crap, but it does get 4 stars on Amazon.
