To have a tattoo done at 40?

Ashantai · 18/08/2008 01:21

I promised myself that if managed to lose 3 and a half stone before i got to 40, i would finally get a tattoo. Nothing huge, but maybe a tiger or scorpion on my lower back.

Well i finally did it ! Yay!! Down to 8st 10 and gonna hit the big 40 in November (its the 14th if you all wanna get me pressies.

Anyhoo half of the people i have told have said yea go for it, whilst the other half are a bit "hmm dont you think you're a bit old for that?"

Not sure if i have the pain threshold for it tho, i havent even got my ears pierced, but its just something i have always wanted to do. To all you tattood peeps out there, does it really hurt as much as i am hearing? shudders

Naetha would love to have a look at your tats, password?

Ashantai go for it! Ignore all the miseries on here. It sounds like you've wanted one for years.

I wanted one from about 14 but didn't do it until I was 28 as everyone always said I'd regret it (and I was a bit scared of it hurting!!).

In the end I got it done and I love it.

In the years between when I was 14 and 28 tats became much more mainstream, fashion items really. But I knew that I was getting it not for fashion, but because I wanted one for myself and that makes all the difference.

The only thing I did which I think was a good idea is I got it somewere that's not on show, as I got the tattoo for me, not for others.

Go for it! Your body not anyone elses.

I got a tattoo on my upper arm when I was 21 & still love it now at 34...in fact when our finances improve I will probably get another with my sons name on it.

I did hurt when they started colouring it in...but it was bearable. The other tattooist kept me occupied by telling jokes all the while. I had more problems keeping still than anything else as he was really funny

Oddly most people I've talked to said it hurt the most when they were having the outline done...I think I'm just weird LOL.

What are you thinking of having done Ashanti?

Go for it but make sure you get a really good artist. And remeber a cheap tattoo looks cheap. It's worth forking out the extra. It's going to be on your body for the rest of your life. So works out at as bargain if you look at it that way.

Some people rock tattoos and some don't, depends on the design, artist and the person. Your body your choice.

Do you have sky?

If so watch Miami Ink its on at 2.00pm and 8.00pm (repeat i think) every week day. I love it! makes me want to have more tattoos. But i wont.

if you have got to the age of 40 and stillwant one then i think its pretty sadfe to say you know your own mind and have given it enough thought.

tell whoever tells you your too old to take a long walk.

get it done..then show us the pics.

Oh and as for the pain....the outline stings. it isn't pleasant but no where near as painfullas you will imagine it to be. you will have built up so much anxiety about ho much it hurts that you will be actually relieved that it doesn't.

the colour doesn't hurt at all because they use a different style needle.

All i will say is that you should pick a design that means something to you, it should be one that you are happy with and certain you want, make sure your artist is someone you know and trust and that you have seen their work on people who are happy with the effect.

and yes...lower back is considered a tramp stamp. more for the fact that lots of little girls get them done and then walk round with half their arse hanging out to show it off

I think the pain is quite pleasant. addictive infact.

Just think if you've given birth then the pain of a tattoo is a walk in the park.

different places hurt more. Spine, ribs, feet.

I can remember the needle hitting my spine and hip bone(not directly into the bone) that's a very odd feeling.

"bottom of your back is a tramp stamp - its like "ride me i'm a whore and heres something to look at whilst i take it like the dog i am"

That had me laughing out loud

I have watched miami ink for months now and must admit that i like the little discreet ones they have now and again

The HUGE ones with portraits are amazing, specially the ones which people have to remember their sadly departed ones.

I'm gonna give it some more thought and maybe get a spray one done, just so i can see if i like it. A few mates of mine had one spray painted, funnily enough in Croydon town centre (maybe you saw them Tittybangbang ), but i dont think i have the courage to stand there with my back hanging out!

If you want one, get it. Think about what you want, but people either love tattoos or hate them (bit like marmite really!)

I've got a few, one on my wrist (also really like the one on the hand!), upper arms and right shoulder. All in places I can cover them if I want too such as working etc.

Also getting two more, one on my foot and another on my left shoulder.

Found the outline was more painful, but they stop frequently.

Look for a good tattooist.

Get one that says "No Fear" or (another popular one from our local swimming pool) your name in Gothic Script. I think this is so that the police can easily identify stabbing victims.

Congrats on the weight loss by the way.

Do it if you want to - I wanted one for years and finally did it this year at the age of 34.

I've got a lovely little daisy on the inside of my wrist. It looks like a pencil drawing and is very discreet.

I love it and it didn't hurt a bit.

Well done on the weight loss, btw.

tramp stamp - blimey! you learn a little something every day on mn.

i've wanted one for ages but am too chicken. and now 41! midlife crisis? maybe but less trouble than an affair, i imagine

bobbiewickham yours sounds v cute.

imho worrying about regretting things later is a way to watch your life pass you by... i should know, i do enough of it.

so if you really want it, go for it. remember to post a pic
