To not want DP to give the kids beef that is sitting in a puddle of blood??

I know people cook beef to be pink in the middle, but I've just gone to look at the joint after dinner and it's sitting in a puddle of blood. Surely that's not good for them is it? He says it's fine because they had bits from the outside that are more cooked.

I don't like the taste of meat I think isn't cooked enough.

Don't give a flying fuck about what is posh or not, being a foreigner.

If I order it in a restaurant and it's not flippin' cooked I'm sending it back.

As I wrote earlier, however, thankfully that's not a common problem in the Western Highlands.

DisenchantedPlusBump · 10/08/2008 19:36

if i eat beef, and thats not often, it has to be cremated.

If theres a a drip of blood I wouldn't touch it.

Yack!

pointydog · 10/08/2008 19:45

Nothing wrong with it if you like it that way.

In t'olden days, kids would go along to the abattoir for a cup of warm blood.

pointydog · 10/08/2008 19:48

Believing that meat is overcooked if it's cooked through to the middle, is only because that's what lots of people have told you. It's not a fact, it's opinion.

Blandmum · 10/08/2008 20:08

PD I have a spanish friend and he said that one of the biggest treats of his childhood was a fried blood sandwitch!

He told me this when I asked him if he was sure he wanted to try haggis!

pointydog · 10/08/2008 20:11

bleurgh. It was a Belgian employer of mine who used to drink warm cups of blood. And I had to cook calf's brains for her child. Continentals take carnivore-ism too far.

expatinscotland · 10/08/2008 20:12

this thread has taken a turn (of the stomach) for the worst.

Alambil · 10/08/2008 20:23

bleugh, beef is meant to be BLACK!!

Bumdiddley · 10/08/2008 20:25

mmm.

It is a matter of personal taste though.

While I like my beef rare, I don't like black pudding or anything like that.

But when I cook steak I pretty much show it to the frying pan (two minutes on each side).

MmeLindt · 10/08/2008 20:34

And don't get me started on the Germans

Blutwurst anyone?

Just the name of it... bleaugh

I do like my beef a bit bloody, though.

When you are pregnant one of the restrictions is only to eat well done steak, would that not apply to young children too?

herbgarden · 10/08/2008 20:36

I don't think there's any health issues around it - I suspect the french serve it that way to their kids?

I'd only want to serve it "pink" to ds so that he gets used to it that way. We are beef lovers in this house and like it medium rare so pink but not transluscent pink so don't really want to do what we used to have to do when Granny came to sunday lunch and that's cut bits off and cremate it for her....

Funnily enough, DH has started to find that very rare meat gives him a jippy tummy....so we're having to cook it a wee bit longer.

LittleMyDancingForJoy · 10/08/2008 20:37

No, the pregnancy thing is to do with toxoplasmosis, which is only harmful to unborn children. No problem with rare meat for anyone over weaning age.

southeastastra · 10/08/2008 20:38

i like beef cremated

DH likes his virtually mooing - wipe it's arse and slap it on a plate...

I like mine brown most of the way through but with that tiny hint of pink in the middle. Not raw and oozing

Having said that the best thing about roast beef is the Yorkshire puddings!

zephyrcat · 11/08/2008 20:06

Sorry for disappearing! I personally like it cooked and DP likes it rare but my issue was giving it to the kids rare. Not something I can stomach!!

OP posts:
zephyrcat · 11/08/2008 20:07

Oh, and dp has just eaten more of it and now has a bad stomach ache. Ha!

Hulababy · 11/08/2008 20:19

When leaving a roast beef to stand then there should be some blood left on the plate, otherwise it will be overcooked inside.

DD loves her meat still pink. She doesn;t enjoy well done meat much at all.

Kevlarhead · 11/08/2008 22:45

If you don't want it, I'll have it

...pass the mustard will you? Ta.

mamalovesmojitos · 11/08/2008 23:03

bumdiddly & bree rofl!

i love a bloody piece of meat as well.

but have always been afraid to give it to dd.

Skramble · 11/08/2008 23:12

I don't think it is posh to like rare meat, but terribly poncey to try and dictate that that is the correct and only way to eat meat.

Each to there own and all that, nothing like a bunch of arses out to dinner try to outdo each other on how -raw- sorry rare they like there steaks.

Properly cooked beef that is cooked through with just a bit of pinkness can be tender, doesn't have to be cooked to oblivion like MIL's seem to like doing, then allowed to cool and then reheated in the micro hours later, still chewing come wednesday .

CuckooClockWorkOrange · 12/08/2008 17:45

Very true... and on that note, I'll apologise for reviving this thread. Just had to congratulate you skramble for being the absolute voice of reason here.
