...to find the borderline eco-facist approach of Cbeebies more than slightly irritating...???!

Honestly, if it's not Spring/Autumnwatch (which I find quite acceptable on their own) it's now The fecking vomit inducing Green Balloon Club, Nina and the nauseating Neurons GO ECO, Gordon the Garden gnome, Our Planet and painful lovely little ditties about recycling and all pulling together for our planet.

Sentiments I buy into generally - I recycle, I walk if I don't need to drive, and I buy shopping as ethically and morally as I possibly can in an inner city area, but I do object to the near brainwashing that seems to be afoot on children's TV at the mo.

AARGH! Ok, rant over. Just wondered what anyone else thought...

Thanks Edam

Seriously. The BBC has a duty to provide balanced programming, but I think it goes way over the top. CBBC is the older children's channel, and I think it's more appropriate there. CBeebies is for toddlers and pre-school (well, and me obviously) and brainwashing is definitely how it comes across. The BBC is guilty of terrible positive racism in it's promotion of ethnic specific musci stations and sports development programs. According to the BBC if I was white then I shouldn't listen to certain artists because they play them on their Black music station. I can't listen to Asian music, of which I am a great fan, as I may not be Asian so don't have the station promoted to me.

The last time a Black Man married a Black Woman on BBC was in 1972 on Love Thy Neighbour. The BBC has actively promoted interracial marriage, which si cool, but to the point where it is seen as the normal thing to do, making Black Women feel like they are second best.

The global warming debate is still raging on the BBC website, where certainty levels are still only 90% that it's anything to do with man at all. Apparently some cows farting make about 50%, and all of the steam from the excess water we have (what?) is contributing massively.

I think we should all wait until 5 o'clock when the whistle blows and have a good dance in the town square.

lazaroulovesleggings · 28/07/2008 16:26

Mine prefer to watch milkshake, it seems to have better programs. Plus, it's quite amusing that the budget is obviously lower with the presenters in a broom cupboard.

IorekByrnison · 28/07/2008 16:27

lol at your mum and the pontipines TenaciousG. I made the mistake of telling dd about how Pui plays Po in the teletubbies recently. Not surprisingly she found this a totally bewildering concept. Now every time we pass a cow in a field she says "who's inside the cow?", and the other day watching Higgledy House she asked "who's inside Sarah-Jane?"

Now there's a question.

moulesfrites · 28/07/2008 16:52

Interesting article aboutt his very subject in guardian last week:

here

edam · 28/07/2008 17:58

ROFL at 'who's inside SJ'! I suspect it's NOT Justin. A civil partnership beckons for that (very talented) man, I reckon.

TheMagnificent7 · 28/07/2008 20:16

You think ? My GAYDAR doesn't go off with him. He's very Jolly. I just think he's a bit like a cross between Morrissey and The Bear In The Big Blue House. You know he's a bloke. But he's totally asexual. Nice cup of tea and...sniff sniff sniff...what's that smell?

I saw SJ at the CBeebies extortion show. She's the bounciest person on Earth. She's brilliant

theheadgirl · 28/07/2008 20:44

Pui plays Po??? No!!! There's a pub quiz fact! I remember seeing her as an asian tart in the bridget jones the sequal film
Agree about Justin not setting off gaydar. Chris yes, Justin no.

Janni · 28/07/2008 20:54

You're breaking my heart.
I didn't let my first two kids watch much TV (precious first and second borns). Now with child number 3 I have no idea how I would cope without CBeebies.
I just blardy love them all; gay, straight, uber-eco - I don't care.

edam · 28/07/2008 21:21

Ok, evidence for Justin being a friend of Dorothy:

  1. He's a male children's TV presenter
  2. His personality/style/whatever just reeks of not being interested in ladies.

(Disclaimer - perhaps I am jaundiced by having known a few male children's TV presenters...)

theheadgirl · 28/07/2008 21:32

Edam - what about Sid?? He can't be, he is too beautiful, it would be a waste....

moulesfrites - thanks for the link. Glad it's not just me that thinks it's all going a little OTT. Have loved reading this thread!! Thanks for your responses, guys!

My kids love the green balloon club, and play pretend games based on it, which I guess is kind of cute (though I hasten to add with NO eco themes whatsoever, so I guess it's rather failing to get it's point across..hmm interesting!!) - I hate it with a passion. In fact I hate it nearly as much as Barney. In fact it IS Barney, just without...well, Barney!

Have you seen Big cook Ben and Little Cook Small on that Brainiac, science abuse type programme?? Bit crazy - can't quite work out how they went from one state of affairs to the other really...weird! To see them in BCLC with their scarily camp and twee act, and then switch over to watch their 'get the beer's in lads, it's time for Brainiac' approach is quite bizarre!!

DS preferes videos to TVat the mo, which cuts out a lot of the brainwashing/advertising problems, but does unfortunately mean that we have watched a very limited number of things a great many times. (Have made hime sound like a totla couch potato, 3 yo lard arse - he's not - He watches some TV/video first thing in the a.m and then for his quiet time (gave up napping) after lunch). I love Wallace and Gromit but twice a day for a week is starting to grate a bit now...still it's bettern than the terrible GBC so will pipe down now!

I'm bi-lingual in Dora and English now.

I know what you mean about Justin. But to counter your argument (only slightly admittedly), he does a really good slapstick Clown, and that's a bloke thing. If he was playing the pink oboe he would be a mime.

We have the standard digital TV channels, but the ones that come with a Sky box. Don't have the subscription, but there's a host of channels 'up' from CBeebies on Pop, Tiny Pop, Tiny Pop + 1, Pops best mate etc. They show a program called Corduroy which my 4 year old loves. It's beautifully misguided in its PCness (main character is a Black child in New York, but the mother is supposed to be from Jamaica and they have a Dick Van Dyke equivalent doing a Cool Runnings impression). The Eco side of things is not so forced, and the subjects centre around community cohesion and pride in their environment. Looking after it makes them feel good etc, and they don't have to ram it down your throat.

Of course they then follow this with Strawberry Shortcake weekend where you have 18 hours a day of kids in a land made of sweets that will give you diabetes and make you as large as a Channel 5 documentary.

And Chris - GAYDAR says NONG NONG NONG NONG

misspollysdolly · 28/07/2008 22:30

A kids programme called CORDUROY??!!

Heaven's alive, whatever next?...suggestions gratefully received as I am loving reading his thread - you have all made me laugh soooo much!!

I heartily agree. I like to consider myself a proper little eco warrior most of the time but if Bob the bloody builder erects one more yurt with solar panels I'm going to personally burn it down - with petrol and tyres.

edam · 28/07/2008 22:31

'playing the pink oboe' is a new one on me.

Big Cook Ben doesn't count, he's an adult comedian rather than a straight (ho ho) children's TV presenter.

And of course, there are some straight male kids TV presenters. It's just the proportion of gay to straight is probably not that of the general population. And I would very nearly put money on Justin not having a Mrs Justin or any plans to acquire a Mrs Justin (except I'm a tight Northerner).

So if Big Cook Ben is 'like Keith Harris doing 'blue stuff' with Orville' does that mean he regularly has his hand up Little Cook Small (his bad comedy double act partner)...what a horrible image to go to bed on!!

Mag7, I have roffled at your posts on this thread.

V funny

TheMagnificent7 · 29/07/2008 00:58

Well thanks. I try. Misspent adulthood. And did you know they show old kids shows on Nick Jr after 8. You can still see Bungle (asexual), Zippy (Dalek whose balls didn't drop), George (stoner), and Geoffrey (spit roasted by Rod and Freddy whilst Jane sings about happy little birdies). Or maybe I dreamt that.

You'd think they could find something better than Button Moon though. Although that could be classed as a years before it's time eco friendly not green but green ifyswim (sorry wanky acronym) recycling show where they took the ropiest pieces of tat and wrapped it round a washing up bottle (not Fairy - that took too long) then pretended it flew to the moon. Hardly rocket science, and nothing like our Mars lander program...bigger budget.

TenG (that's your new rap name - I'm Puff Doubt) - Thank youthis time round. I am PMSL at the thought of LCS's head sticking out. Living Butt Plug. Brilliant. You'll be telling me Pontipines are like love eggs next !

AbstractMouse · 29/07/2008 01:07

Where are all the fecking funny /subversive kids cartoons. DD has resorted to a spongebob/tom and jerry obsession. Where? really?

Lurkinaround · 29/07/2008 01:18

Am I the only one who thinks that Stan is just a teensy bit TOO fond of Little Red Tractor?

TinkerBellesMum · 29/07/2008 01:30

One of the Shelias is married to Tinky Winky BTW. I think it's the short blonde one
