sorry an going to swear as i'm so bloody angry!well, i know i'm not unreasonable in thinking that teaching toddlers to cross the road is basic fucking mothering!

i cant stand seeing women put the buggy over the kerb, then cross the bloody road when it looks clear instead of waiting for the green man - i could have killed a child this morning cos the stupid bint mother couldn't wait 2 fucking seconds. (and no, i'm not a petrol head, am a 45yo mother who would never get over killing a child)

what is the point of having pelican crossings if pedestrians take no notice of the instructions.

I still have my Tufty

Bronze · 18/07/2008 14:13

I was in the tufty club and I'm 27 Sim and Mutt so you're obviously younguns

Sim43 · 18/07/2008 14:15

The clue is in my nickname (unfortunately). Perhaps I should have called myself Sim21 and lived in a dream world all of my own! Perhaps Tufty was after I had grown up then, which is even worse

overthemill · 18/07/2008 14:19

if with a child always wait, if alone, never if it is safe!

jesuswhatnext · 18/07/2008 14:20

will you lot please stop wittering about tufty and start bloody well agreeing with me!!!!

Sim43 · 18/07/2008 14:25

Ok Ok we agree with you!! . We should always set by example, or if that fails use that famous old quote mums use when they are trying to justify something they are doing which is bad "Do as I say and not as I do" covers a multitude of sins

prettybird · 18/07/2008 14:25

I was a memeber of the Tufty Club too

yanbu. if there are little people at the crossing. I wait for the green power ranger. I get really pissed of when they then dodge traffic.

NorkyButNice · 18/07/2008 15:41

If there are kids at the lights I would always wait for green (when I was in the UK - no chance I'm legging it across a New York streeet against the lights!). If it's all adults then I would go for it if it was safe on red.

ThatBigGermanPrison · 18/07/2008 15:48

The time I consider it safe and appropriate to cross the road is nobody else's damn business. I'm not six. I can make a decision on when to cross the road, and if an unaccompanied child can't be trusted to cross safely without blindly following others, that child should have an adult accompanying.

ThatBigGermanPrison · 18/07/2008 15:50

Children wait for the green man. Adults cross when they think it is safe.

Do you know, this really pisses me off. We should be teaching our children to deal with the world the way it is, not moaning because it's not the way we think it ought to be.

undertheduvet · 18/07/2008 15:50

For all us tufty club members
tufty

ThatBigGermanPrison · 18/07/2008 15:51

The people crossoning when it is on red are not naughty, they are adults and have better judgement of speed.

IdrisTheDragon · 18/07/2008 16:01

More Tufty

lottiejenkins · 18/07/2008 16:14

My ds is 12 and profoundly deaf, he has been taught NEVER to cross till he sees the green man, one day we were at a pedestrian crossing and a young lad of about 19 went to cross when the red man was there, my ds grabbed him and said "no dangerous" i told the guy not to worry and he replied that he thought he had better wait as my son had told him to!!!!

chocolatedot · 18/07/2008 16:16

Personally I think the most important thing is for everybody to make sure they look properly before they cross. Many drivers around here run red lights and a 5 year old was killed locally despite being on the crossin gwith the green many showing.

babyignoramus · 18/07/2008 16:16

I hate it when people press the button the cross anyway - I always feel bad for the drivers when they have to stop and no-one is crossing. I have been known to cross the road earlier than planned to make it feel worthwhile for them. And I'm not even a driver! God I'm sad.

Sim43 · 18/07/2008 16:26

LOL lottie, how sweet of your DS. Bet the lad was a bit !

whispywhisp · 18/07/2008 17:14

Am I the only one who doesn't know what the hell the Tufty Club is?

TinkerBellesMum · 18/07/2008 19:30

Do you want to explain to a toddler the difference between an adult crossing the road on red and a child crossing the road on red? If she did it I would be really upset and tell her she's naughty. When she is old enough to think less simplistically I will tell her why adults cross on red.

TBH I don't agree that they do have better judgement of speed, I've seen too many near accidents. Usually it's just taking risks.

I grew up convinced if I crossed where I shouldn't that the policeman who was waiting out of sight would arrest me for jay walking. Took a long time to get over Toronto!

scottishmum007 · 18/07/2008 19:34

I always thought I would run across with the buggy before I had my DS but shock horror I actually do wait til the green man appears before crossing. I do get impatient but would rather be safe than sorry,so I try and stick to my guns on this.
i think an adult who is sensible at crossing the road should do do at their own risk regardless of whether there are kids - it's not against the law to cross without the green man flashing. It is sad when people do it tho when kids are waiting to cross and they may be tempted to follow suit.

BasementBear · 18/07/2008 20:27

I do try to always wait till the green man comes on, but I admit that if we are late for school and the road is clear, we do cross! I try to explain to the DCs that they have to use their judgement too, otherwise how will they learn to cross a road that DOESN'T have lights??

It annoys me when drivers try to be kind by beeping at me that they'll let me cross even though the man has changed to red, when I am trying to teach my children to wait for green! Today we were about to cross a side road when a car came along and wanted to turn into that road. The woman stopped and motioned for us to cross, but it worries me that my DCs might misjudge such a signal - sometimes it's quite hard to see driver's face through the windscreen.
