to think hideous plimsolls are inferior to proper Nike trainers

Why does she need plimsolls (which are clearly inferior in terms of their athletic quality)??

I know I know. Everyone has them and DD is very clear that I MUST buy them for her too. So i will. But someone explain to me why these hideous plimsoll things are preferred for the school sports day?

cos she is a kid and not running a marathon. all that nike techno speak is just marketing.

AtheneNoctua · 15/07/2008 11:09

No it's not. And she already has the Nikes (for tennis).

and they are nice and cheap so it is no big deal when they outgrow them after 5 mins!

zippitippitoes · 15/07/2008 11:11

yabu they are cheap so more egalitarian and sensible

TsarChasm · 15/07/2008 11:11

Well, they're a lot more affordable than Nike trainers so I guess that's why schools only ask that they are provided.(Thank goodness, from my pov anyway )

And Sports Day isn't exactly the Olympics so the athletic quality of the footwear is only really needed to be at plimsoll level.

AtheneNoctua · 15/07/2008 11:11

I could understand if the instruction was "Please send your child to school with trainers or plimsolls" But not "No trainers, plimsolls only please"

I clearly know more about sport shoes than they do.

what Idobf said.

I'd be really pissed off if DCs came home saying "...but all the other kids wear nikes"

We are a very not-sporty family, we just don't do Nike.

cheesesarnie · 15/07/2008 11:12

i think schools prefer them so that theres none of this 'my traners are better than yours' stuff.also theyre easy to put on and do the job, nothing fancy.they dont fancy shoes for school sports day.

cadelaide · 15/07/2008 11:13

yes.

easy to put on.

zippitippitoes · 15/07/2008 11:13

but technical shoes are not necessary for a school sports day they would be overkill

TsarChasm · 15/07/2008 11:14

Maybe the school are trying to avoid a 'my trainers are better than your trainers' type scenario.

WendyWeber · 15/07/2008 11:14

DS2's primary school shoes were trainers (black ones) - he used to change into plimsolls for PE

edam · 15/07/2008 11:14

It won't do your children any harm to wear plimsolls, will it? And far better that everyone wears them same than getting into stupid one-upmanship about trainer brands. Unless you are worried your child's performance might be affected, of course...

cadelaide · 15/07/2008 11:14

We're talking egg and spoon, sack race, that kind of thing aren't we?

AtheneNoctua · 15/07/2008 11:14

But, she already has them. And now she needs plimsolls too, which she is never ever again going to wear -- certainly not in my presense.

Ooh Cheesesarnie and I posted spookily similar posts there!

cadelaide · 15/07/2008 11:15

Daps are cool.

Remember Dexy's Midnight Runners?

snice · 15/07/2008 11:16

What a snobby statement!

edam · 15/07/2008 11:16

if you can afford Nike trainers and tennis lessons, you can afford a few quid for plimsolls.

LittleBoSheep · 15/07/2008 11:16

Agree totally plimsolls are cheap so doesnt matter if you need to replace them every few weeks and it is so that the brand snobbery doesnt exist in school.

Id be glad and keep her Nikes at home for when she trains for the olympics with you.

snice · 15/07/2008 11:17

Not Cadelaide -I don't think Dexy's are at all snobby!

zippitippitoes · 15/07/2008 11:17

lol you do sound a bit ahem precious abouth them

BadHair · 15/07/2008 11:17

How old is she? If she's young it could be to do with actually getting the things on - ds1 is 7 and would struggle with getting his trainer laces tight enough and ds2, 5, would have no chance. The poor teacher would spend half of sports day lacing the class into their branded footwear!

LittleBoSheep · 15/07/2008 11:18

"precious" yes thats the nice way to phrase it
