to think hideous plimsolls are inferior to proper Nike trainers

Why does she need plimsolls (which are clearly inferior in terms of their athletic quality)??

I know I know. Everyone has them and DD is very clear that I MUST buy them for her too. So i will. But someone explain to me why these hideous plimsoll things are preferred for the school sports day?

Surely everybody's stuff gets jumbled up on sports day. If you lost a Nike trainer you'd be really pissed off, but at the end of the day you might come home with 2 black plimsolls of the same size and not even know one of them was somebody else's! I bet the teachers just can't be arsed to have people all upset about their expensive Nikes.

AtheneNoctua · 15/07/2008 11:18

Okay, I take the point about one uniform and conformity so sports day is not a fashion competition. That makes sense.

snice

ChippyMinton · 15/07/2008 11:18

What has she been wearing for PE all year?

cheesesarnie · 15/07/2008 11:19

plimsolls cost about £2 in woolworths!£2 wasted thats all and then never again in your presence.

tell us whats so wrong with plimsolls anyway?tell me what childrens fashion faux pas im making at PE time?

ranting · 15/07/2008 11:21

Rofl at the 'not wearing plimsolls in my presence'. Just like mastercard...priceless.

zippitippitoes · 15/07/2008 11:23

what is odd is that you have to go to different shops accodrding to the shape oif childs feet so shop a has strangely narrow one s for the size and shop b fat ones

morningpaper · 15/07/2008 11:23

Eh? What does she wear for P.E.?

cadelaide · 15/07/2008 11:24

Come on you daps

auntyquated · 15/07/2008 11:24

does she need these purely for sports day?
or is it what they wear for PE too?

plimsolls are worn/chosen by the school for all the reasons mentioned above plus it gives them more feeling of balance when doing gym or dance.

if they allowed trainers for sports day there would be the "his trainers are better than your trainers" stuff plus the "you only won cos of your Nikes" / "I could have won if my mum could afford Nikes" stuff

ChippyMinton · 15/07/2008 11:24

Don't send your DD to our school because they wear their plimsolls all day whilst indoors! You should see the state of them

LittleBoSheep · 15/07/2008 11:25

My children are still small - I think the plimsolls look quite sweet but then I loathe white trainers with a passion no matter which must have technology they include or who made them

I dont let the children wear anything of value to school or take any favourite toys I feel the teachers are there to educate them not waste their time trying to find precious Tarquins lost Nikes/go gos/Dr Who toys

cadelaide · 15/07/2008 11:25

That album cover would not have looked the same if he was wearing Nike trainers, now would it?

TsarChasm · 15/07/2008 11:26

Daps is a great word.

Hmm..'Nike Daps'.. could be a marketing opprtunity in there with those maybe

cadelaide · 15/07/2008 11:28

Where I grew up they were always daps, plimsoll was something to do with boats.

Incoming folk from the Midlands called them "pumps"

zippitippitoes · 15/07/2008 11:29

daps is welsh isnt it

AtheneNoctua · 15/07/2008 11:29

Well, she's been taking her trainers to school all year for PE. This is the first I've heard. But, hey ho, I guess they are now exclusively tennis shoes and plimsolls will go to school. And you are right, I wouldn't be pleased if they were lost at school.

OP posts:
cheesesarnie · 15/07/2008 11:30

ive not heard them being called daps before

cadelaide · 15/07/2008 11:30

Might be welsh, dunno, south west here.

Idobelieveinfairies · 15/07/2008 11:30

My mum and dad always referred to them as 'daps'.....ha..it is a great word!

Idobelieveinfairies · 15/07/2008 11:31

My mum ws from wales-dad from gloucester. They have funny nams for things..'house-coat' is a dressing-gown.

AtheneNoctua · 15/07/2008 11:35

My Canadian nanny called it a house coat too. DH calls it a dressing gown. And I (American) call it a bathrobe.

OP posts:
Rachmumoftwo · 15/07/2008 11:36

My children don't wear daps in my presence either- they stay in school for PE. They aren't the nicest of shoes, you wouldn't want them to wear them to a party, but they are cheap, practical and suitable for their purpose.

snice · 15/07/2008 11:37

Ah -now I understand you better. Being an American you havn't grown up with our hideous school plimsolls yourself

ranting · 15/07/2008 11:37

God I'd rather have a dap than a Nike trainer, any day.
