#9845 to be a bit disappointed that the school cake sale was full of nasty mageriney fake cakes.

You know, the ones that have magarine/cream not butter cream fillings and crappy fridge cakes.

I feel like such a mug I was asked to contribute and told (exactly)what kind of things to make which I duly did (and it cost a small fortune) Then the stuff I had made was sold off at the same price as the other rubbish(which they couldn't shift).

Go on call me a snobby beetch- I know what I will be making next year

The children like them though. And I did once buy a half decent Victoria sponge. Not as good as M&S but (quite rightly) cheaper.

minkychunky · 11/07/2008 14:51

Nkf mine whips M&S's arse I tell you.

vanilla cream and everything in mine.

Children like all sorts of vile things though. Not all deserve space .

nkf · 11/07/2008 14:53

But I don't think your cakes are at my children's school sadly. Otherwise I'#d be first in the queue.

Mercy · 11/07/2008 14:53

I think so too, nkf.

Minky, I think it was very unfair for you to have been told what to make, and so much of it . At our school we just ask for any contributions.

nkf · 11/07/2008 14:55

Anyway, I must take myself off. And I think it's cake stall day today.

minkychunky · 11/07/2008 14:57

Thanks for making feel a bit better.

I have learned my lesson and will contribute next time of course but I won't be told what to make, I will do my own thing.

Oh no I am the only one who likes them mr kipling and sugarry tea once a years ok isn't it?I love the way when you get them home they are unrecognisable from what you bought they always disintegrate

SoupDragon · 11/07/2008 15:03

the only time I've been told what to make is when I've asked and I was simply asked to make bog cakes rather than, say, individual fairy cakes.

Even if no one else makes the effort, I won't drop my standards and the cakes DSs take in (and DD to her nursery fair) are homemade ones.

SoupDragon · 11/07/2008 15:05

Oh, and they're always made with butter

nkf · 11/07/2008 15:05

I was once asked to take an M&S one out of the box and ruffle it up a bit. Yes really.

minkychunky · 11/07/2008 15:07

What , like nibble the sides?

Oblomov · 11/07/2008 15:13

I only ever use marg in my cakes.
Sorry.
My coffeee and walnut last week, didn't even last the evening, so it can't be that bad though.

Oblomov · 11/07/2008 15:14

I too love just about every mr kippling cake.

minkychunky · 11/07/2008 15:15

Ob I'm sure it was much tastier than mine.

noddyholder · 11/07/2008 15:15

Oh i love coffee and walnut its my fave but I am rubbish at cakes! I am surpriswed people can get so hot under the collar about school cakes! But then i love summer fetes too and skinny sandwiches with egg and cress and plastic cups.

minkychunky · 11/07/2008 15:17

Noddy I am just far too sensitive for my own good.

DD1 is long out of primary and DD2 won't be going for a while, but the homemade vs vile sainsburys mini bites thing has got my goat before.

I notice my homemade stuff gets snapped up at NCT events, but adults are more descerning I suppose.

For those of you with children in school; do you think it would work to ask parents if they would like to bake and if so, would the parents not wanting to bake be willing to donate towards ingredients rather than spending even more on shop cakes? Would that be too much of faff for words? I'd be happy to make 6 cakes, but wouldn't on the basis that they'd be "up against" Mr Kipling and my hard work (not to mention money) would be wasted. 6 cakes, two "from me" and 4 "on behalf of" non-baking, non-shop-buying parents would be fine.

PuppyMonkey · 11/07/2008 15:33

Oh go on, tell me.

kiddiz · 11/07/2008 15:59

SoupDragon...."bog cakes" mmmmmm!!!!

nooka · 11/07/2008 16:18

See Wannabe I don't understand your pricing because you say
"shop bought little cakes/biscuits were between 50-75p" but you were only charging 10p, or at most 20/25p for homemade biscuits/fairy cakes or muffins.

I see your point about children with pocket money, but surely homemade should be at a premium because they probably cost more and certainly took more effort.

minkychunky I can't believe you were told so specifically what to make, and so much too!

MadamePlatypus · 11/07/2008 16:20

But can you imagine being the person who had to price all the cakes based on the quality?

"Well Mrs Smith's cake is clearly made with home made jam, so I am awarding it the prize of being £1 a slice, whereas Mrs Brown is clearly a lazy slattern who used a packet mix and her cake will be on sale at 10p a slice".
