To be secretly pleased when my corner shop runs out of all bread except the plastic white stuff?

The pressure to eat bread that's good for you and 'tastes better' means that our bread bin always has a seeded loaf or something else equally poncy in it. Imagine my delight when I had to do an emergency run and the shop only had the plastic white stuff...

It dragged me back in to the days of ham & mustard sarnies and white toast...I'm loving it but it won't last long....the loaf is almost over

Three!!!

Guadalupe · 11/07/2008 21:32

yes

I made a huge one today as I had loads of black bananas, it's the rum soaked raisin Nigella recipe. I have wrapped it up now to stop myself slicing any more off but it has been a week of ryvitas.

eddiejo · 11/07/2008 21:34

Is it gluten and wheat free??

Guadalupe · 11/07/2008 21:37

no, but there isn't much flour in it, mostly bananas and raisins.

I can eat some wheat just not bread for some reason, though I feel very bloated after the cake.

WendyWeber · 11/07/2008 21:37

That Hovis Best of Both (aka BOB) is great you know - quite plasticky soft but still with a bit of good stuff in it

WendyWeber · 11/07/2008 21:39

Guadalupe, DD2 has IBS - she is 23, has had strange digestion all her life, has recently cut out wheat & looks & feels soooo much better for it

Supermarket gluten-free bread is horrible though, I'm thinking of getting a bread-maker so we can make nicer stuff for her.

eddiejo · 11/07/2008 21:43

thanks Guadalupe might try it.

Wendy Weber - best flour to make GF/WF bread is Glebe Farm. Available in most healthy type shops.

Guadalupe · 11/07/2008 21:44

yes, I have always had stomach aches too. If I don't eat any wheat I feel great but I can have a bit without too much ill effect. Only takes half an hour or so after eating bread though to get lethargic, irritable, puffed up and in pain. Yet, I crave it, so annoying.

WendyWeber · 11/07/2008 21:44

Oooh, thanks, eddiejo

(Now all I need is a breadmaker )

ChukkyPig · 11/07/2008 21:49

For fear of being shot down as I know nothing whatsoever about it, but if bread is a problem, but other wheat products not, could yeast be the problem? Modern bakeries are notorious for using huge amounts of yeast to speed up their baking process. And if your tummy is blowing up, that could be the yeast activity. Same as the reason bread rises the yeast gives off gas.

Possible?

DustyTV · 11/07/2008 21:53

Mmmm white bread.

Only bacon sarnies can be done on white, there are no substitutes for a bacon sarnie. It's not the same on brown or 'poncy' bread.

Guadalupe · 11/07/2008 22:06

yes, it is the yeast I think, chukkypig, which is why marmite on toast is sadly the worst thing, yeast on yeast, but I love it.

colditz · 11/07/2008 22:09

I have learned to my horror that too much wholemeal is bad for small children. Ds2 was getting chronic diarrhoea until someone pointed out that PB sarnies on brown (his staple diet atm) are actually very high in fibre, I swapped to white and the diarrhoea cleared up in a day.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 11/07/2008 22:10

Ah a white bread thread.

I'm currently scoffing two rounds of cheese on toast. Thick white Warburtons. [yum]

We eat loads of white bread in our house.

Goober · 11/07/2008 22:21

We usually have Tesco bakery rolls during the week. I buy 6 packs to last and freeze them. They are so soft.

gemmiegoatlegs · 11/07/2008 22:25

Just to clarify

Fishfinger sandwich
4 fishfingers(fits perfectly)
white bread (2 slices)
BROWN SAUCE -HP

any other alternative is just plain wrong

ChukkyPig · 11/07/2008 22:28

Guadeloupe I had a revelatory conversation with my mum earlier.

I said I'd given up even feeling guilty about not liking cereal for breakfast any more. Now I have what I want.

Two slices of toast. One cheese, one marmite.

She said "oh, cheese and marmite both contain xxxx(forgotten), that of course has the same effect as dopamine".

Blimey no wonder my breakfast always perks me up!!

MmeBovary · 11/07/2008 22:31

I'm in Belgium and the sliced bread here is just not the same! We normally buy brown bread in the supermarket but usually every other weekend I bother to drive to the British Shop. So then we have Kingsmill, starting with sausgage or bacon Sarnies. Yumm! Toast with lemon curd! I actually bought some Sandwich spread last time but haven't done it yet! Then on Monday I make cheese and pickle sarnies to take to work...Loaf is all gone by then or past sell by but it always tastes so good....I think we appreciate this stuff more as it is expensive and a bit of a treat.

Goober · 11/07/2008 22:32

No. No. No. goatlegs. You have it all wrong.
White bread TOASTED.
4 fish-fingers, agree, perfect fit.
Mayonaise.

THE END.**

WheresTheAuPair · 11/07/2008 22:35

cheese and sweetcorn toasties- 0-heaven in 5 mins

ChukkyPig · 11/07/2008 22:42

AuPair would you consider cheese on toast with ham and tomato sprinkled on. Love the tomatoey goodness (5 a day) on the cheese feasting loveliness!

Also cold chicken and onion on cheese one toast...

Surely anything would taste marvellous if put on cheese on toast and grilled!

WheresTheAuPair · 11/07/2008 23:28

chukkypig am not keen on ham but love cheese and tomatoes on toast-seasoned with salt and fresh black pepper .
Cheese and green peppers on toast is delish tho. I discovered this when I ran out of tomatoes mmm.

Psychomum5 · 11/07/2008 23:30

nothing like a thread about the virtues (or not) of white bread to bring a smile to my face!!!!

WheresTheAuPair · 11/07/2008 23:31

this thread is dangerous. Am trying not to buy bread at all as am attempting not to put on another 4 stone whilst pregnant!! (have put on nearly 1 1/2 already and am only 25 weeks all I can think of at 11.30pm is cheese and green peppers on toast now!!

WheresTheAuPair · 11/07/2008 23:33

luckily all I have is virtuous frozen wholemeal pitta bread so i think i'm safe from my [ahem] craving...until the morning anyway
