It's been sat in reception for a week, everyone has had a rummage and I figured anyone who was going to recognise them would have done.

Have I been unreasonable?

I went through the school's lost property this week as a favour. Anything named was returned to the child via the class teacher (delivered by me).
They are laying the rest out on sports day for everyone to take their pick.
What on earth are the school supposed to do with it all? There is a MASSIVE amount. I was really .

OP was unreasonable in that she hadn't checked with the school first. Don't think the school are unreasonable in giving it away though.....

i've taken a sweatshirt, my son lost two the same week and it was freezing and he'd be cold otherwise. it was quite manky though.

Our school sells unclaimed uniform at the end of the school year. Are they stealing to make a profit for the school?

It's accepted at our school, took me years to work the system out. dd1 has lost, on average, a sweatshirt a week throughout her school life. It used to cost me a fortune in new sweatshirts. Til someone told me that it was ok to just pick one out of the lost property instead. And many, many other people in 3 different schools clearly have our sweatshirts at home in return.

I have bought enough new sweatshirts to furnish a small army. I don't feel remotely guilty at rummaging in the lost property now.

Give it back.

I've taken unnamed jumpers from the lost property box when 3 weeks of rummaging failed to turn up any of the ones DS2 had lost, all of which were named in black pen.

They sell the stuff at my children's school. There's a come and get it day and after it's flogged at one of the fairs.

When DD loses a cardi I assume someone has taken it home. After a couple of weeks I send her to lost property to get one in the same size! Costs a fortune to replace otherwise. DD1 did this once and on closer inspection it was actually her cardi!

That's very funny. SkyTVaddict.

Well, you have taken something that doesn't belong to you, but if the school is condoning this, then so be it
