MUMSNET JURY! Am I stuck up, or is my husband totally bonkers?

Right.
My dh is flying from tiny airport in the north of norway tonight, arriving in Oslo midnight. He will sleep in the airport, fly to London to be in a meeting tomorrow at 10 am. So far so good. He is taking a train to Gatwick, where he will pick up a tent he has reserved in a camping store. He will fly to Oslo in the evening, sleep in the airport, and fly back to tiny airport in the north the next day.

This is where I think it goes mad:

As he has cycled to the airport and left his bike at the airport, when he returns he will straight away start cycling to join me.

Where am I? I am at a remote island with my cousin and her dd (their summer house), and there is a ferry connection once a day, where the ferry is located 60 km from the airport. He will go straight from the plane and cycle 60 km, 10 of these are under water, in an usecured and badly lit tunnel under a fjord.... The ferry is 44 km away from the end of the tunnel. 2 hours on the ferry through some pretty rough waters, and then he will cycle further 20 km....

Oh, and we are heading back to town the next day after he joins us, and as there is no room in the car, he will have to return by bike too..... (We are going in just one car to save on petrol and ferry fees)

I think he is mad to concoct this plan.
Or am I just stuck up and unadventurous?

I hope he doesn't forget to pack a box of Black Magic lol

Is this one of those questions that I never did understand in my GCSE Maths exams.

If Bob sleeps in the airport for one night, flies to London, cycles 15 miles, travels in a taxi for 10, flies back to Norway for 372 miles, cycles 16 kilometres, 10 of which are in an underground tunnel underwater and then goes camping for a weekend.
a. What is Bob's median speed?
b. What is the total distance travelled?
c. What is the middle name of Bob's great aunt Alice?

I'm all confused - but it sounds barmy to me if that adds any weight to your AIBU case

SummerLightning · 07/07/2008 22:33

Don't think the distance should be a problem for a fit regular cyclist.

Make sure though that he's really thought through how he's going to carry all his stuff, having been cycle touring with panniers including a v lightweight tent and clothes, I know it is hard to get it all on the bike. Carrying a suit will take up loads of room even if it is folded up!! (maybe he could leave at airport?)

Also does he know what the roads are like? Are they fast and busy? As cycling laden down like that will be no fun on busy roads. And if the tunnel is badly lit, make him take lights!! Also can you definitely cycle in the tunnel, just thinking that in the UK you are occasionally forbidden from cycling through things like tunnels.

And finally what's his sense of direction like? Will be no fun getting lost if he's tired, got 30 miles to go, etc!!

But otherwise I would say good luck to him, he sounds mad

Lovesdogsandcats · 07/07/2008 22:35

Does he moan about 'all he has to do'?

If not, and he is enthusiastic in his madness, keep tight hold of him,he's perfect...oh, and where did you get him?

I WANT ONE TOO!

QuintessentialShadows · 07/07/2008 23:08

He doesnt moan about "all he has to do". He cycles to avoid "all he has" to do on a regular basis. But luckily such escapisms only last around 45 minutes then he comes back with his happy grin to get on with it.

Yes, he is happy and enthusiastic in his madness. My niece (very 13 years old) insists I have 3 boys, not 2, and spend as much time negotiating my dh as my toddler.....

And ROFLT HOCKEYPUCK!

His sense of direction is fine, luckily. I think there is a sign on the tunnel saying no pedestrian and no cyclists. (They should have had one saying No Reindeer, but I guess that wouldnt do much good as the reindeer cant understand roadsigns)

His back up plan is to hitchhike with a lorry yes cos there are so many going out there. I can imagine him sitting outside the tunnel for a few hours with his little sign saying "The Other Side" waiting for a ride. Headlights is a good ides. And leaving his stuff at the airport. But now he hasnt got the bike with him (thanks to his unhemmed suit) he will have to come home before setting off anyway!

Your DH sounds lovely QS!

I once cycled 75 miles over mountains, slept on the floor and cycled back the next day. Was brilliant fun!
That trip from Edinburgh to Aberdeen sounds just lovely, especially with the mid-summer's light
Reminds me that most of the people I was in training to do the Mara-cycle used to night-hike as well!! and that I've not hitched a lift for ages!

hockeypuck rotfl as well

pastapestofor6 · 07/07/2008 23:48

flubdub · 08/07/2008 09:51

Hes barmy!

LilRedWG · 08/07/2008 09:54

Ah - let him be all manly and prove himself , then laugh when he wants you to put witchhazel on the blisters on his bum!

Yep - crazy, but lovely that he wants to get to your asap.

mylovelymonster · 08/07/2008 09:54

make sure he packs - puncture repair kit/spare inner tubes/tyre levers/energy drinks/chocolate/excellent front and rear flashing LED lights & Catseye headlight/high-viz rain jacket/well-fitting and padded bottom/leg attire/crash-hat/map/synchronised time-piece/wrist-mounted GPS. Good luck Mr QS x

QuintessentialShadows · 08/07/2008 10:03

As his bike is NOT in the airport, I am packing a change of clothes for him and take it in the car, so he will only have a daypack of snacks and water to take.

I am off now, so we will see in a few days how this adventure panned out, lol!!

Thanks guys for helping me see just how lovely bonkers is!
