I put up a windchime once, thinking it would be nice. It lasted a few hours and there I was in the middle of the night pulling the bloody thing down again and I didn't even have neighbours. They seem like a good idea but are so annoying with their incessant chiming in the wind. The name should have warned me I suppose.

Katisha · 06/07/2008 16:59

Are you going to go round and own up to unhooking it cos IT WAS DRIVING YOU MAD and could they maybe take it down at night?

bluefox · 06/07/2008 17:26

Cvq - what are you going to do ???

copingvquietly · 06/07/2008 17:34

im going to pop round before i do bathtime.but what do i say

OP posts:
Katisha · 06/07/2008 17:49

You are just going to have to tell the truth.
Say you are finding it impossible to ignore it, especially at night. And especially at the moment when it is so windy (which it is where I am.)

Admit you unhooked them last night as you didn't want to disturb them by going round.

Ask if there is anything you could replace it with eg another garden ornament or a bottle of wine.

Be apologetic as if it's your fault for not being able to stand the noise (even though it isn't...sigh...)

If you get nowhere after that we shall have to rethink.

lucyellensmum · 06/07/2008 17:55

CVQ - maybe you could make a joke of it, just say, look, im sorry but it was driving me INSANE, i have problems with my LO sleeping just now so im a bit sensitive to noise at the moment and i NEED my sleep. That after all is the truth and im sure they will agree and stick it up in the conservatory or inside for a bit. if you normally get on with them im sure they will ge fine. It may well turn out that they were given it as a gift from their great aunt veronica and they felt they had to use it.

copingvquietly · 06/07/2008 18:01

looks like you are going to have to resort to covert operations again. Plan B: Ransom the thing.

LuckySalem · 06/07/2008 18:07

QVC - Can you not go back and say that its keeping J awake and can they move it?

Katisha · 06/07/2008 18:14

Well done for going round but not the answer I was hoping for.

You may have to go round again tomorrow and say look this thing is really intrusive - it may not sound it from their side of the fence but it is from yours.

Hope it's not tinging away tonight. Is it only recently you have been really aware of it - ie is it just the windy weather, or has it been like this for ages?

mrsruffallo · 06/07/2008 18:22

I love wind chimes. I have really big wooden ones, ones with bells, and metal ones.
They make a beautiful sound.
I think you have too much time on your hands

Katisha · 06/07/2008 18:24

Have you got neighbours mrsruffalo?

mrsruffallo · 06/07/2008 18:25

Yes, I have neighbours. They have never commented.
It's a nice sound

Katisha · 06/07/2008 18:26

But why do you feel you have the right to impose it on the neighbours?
I wouldn't assume that not saying anything means they love it as much as you do.

whispywhisp · 06/07/2008 18:28

I went round to my neighbours a year ago cos their windchime kept me awake during windy nights. They were really apologetic about it and are yet to put it back up and needless to say I've not asked them about it since. Sorry but they are a bloody nuisance. Another neighbour of ours had an aviary in his back garden - yes, lovely little birdies going tweet tweet during the day - not a problem but the cockatiel woke up every morning at 4am at dawn chorus. Then it'd wear itself out and sleep during the rest of the day. Oh and my immediate neighbour has a cat. She often brings in dead/dying mice she's caught so she locks her out the cat flap during the night to stop her bringing in her prey. Yes works a treat apart from the fact the cat taps at the cat flap all night long asking to be let in.

Give me a desert island somewhere with a lovely log cabin, wood burner, self sufficient piece of land and peace, solitude and cat free, bird free and windchime free.

Katisha · 06/07/2008 18:31

A previous thread on wind chimes.

bluefox · 06/07/2008 18:46

Mrsruffallo - your neighbours are just being polite. They probably hate your windchimes.

mrsruffallo · 06/07/2008 18:48

Why do you say that bluefox?

Katisha · 06/07/2008 18:52

Because you have decided on their behalf that it is a lovely noise that they want to constantly hear as well as you.

Now they may well not be bothered, but this thread, and the previous one, show that plenty of people find them very very irritating but don't know how to tackle their neighbours about it without seeming like killjoys or starting bad feeling.

bluefox · 06/07/2008 18:54

Well you have said you have many different types of windchimes (not just a single windchime) this must make an almighty racket (esp when its windy). I just find it hard to understand that all your neighbours are happy with this. Do you have a lot of neighbours or are your houses spaced well aoart?

mrsruffallo · 06/07/2008 18:59

Maybe they like the sound. I don't know why you assume that beacuase you don't like something, no one else does.

bluefox · 06/07/2008 19:02

Point taken - all your neighbours must love them then!

Katisha · 06/07/2008 19:08

I think the issue is you deciding for them. Have you asked whether they are happy to have tinkly donging noises all day when they are out in their gardens/have open windows?

I think the onus should be on the windchime provider to check, not the neighbours to have to put up or shut up.

To me it is like having someone else's radio playing too loudly. There are many noises emanating from other people in the vicinity we can do nothing about, why add to it? It's a matter of taste admittedly but I think it is wrong to assume your taste is the one that prevails when it is not confined to your own home.

End of rant. Will go away now.
