to think that host should have mentioned there was vodka in the pimms at a child's party

What do you all think? Went to a child's party on Sat, had what I thought were two small cups (no glasses) of pimms and felt really pissed. Wasn't a major problem, was walking home and hubby was at home so passed over childcare to him and sobered up on water. But found out today that the host had put vodka in the drink. Everyone was commenting that it was really strong, but we're all obviously useless at identifying vodka as we just thought they'd put a lot of pimms in and not so much lemonade. Can't help thinking it was a bit irresponsible though, some of the parents had just one drink thinking it was pimms and then drove home.
Is it me or would you be annoyed?

xposts.

fair enough i think that was bit crap of host to give lemonade to dd

lulumama · 04/07/2008 20:55

h'oooookay

you might want to not go to any more parties for a while. just in case

sounds like it was far too stressful for you

indiechick · 04/07/2008 20:58

Thanks lulumama, not patronising at all.

I thought carbonated drinks were compulsory at a 4 year old kids party. I am sorry indiechick but think you are being slightly precious re. the lemonade thing. I would probably do the same TBH and give the kids lemonade at a kids party. Sorry....

lulumama · 04/07/2008 21:02

not intentionally patronising, but sounds like you did not enjoy it, DD had a bad tummy and you got drunk by mistake

but IMO worst things happen at sea. kids parties are often a time for children and grown ups to cut a bit loose and relax

if you find lemonade drinking an issue, then childrens' parties are not going to be an easy going thing for you . on the whole, they are full of sugar and bubbles

lulumama · 04/07/2008 21:03

you even say yourself maybe you are being a bit precious

southeastastra · 04/07/2008 21:04

isn't pimms either gin or vodka based?

UnquietDad · 04/07/2008 21:04

Agree with expat that drink-drive limit should be zero. But come on, "Why would you drink at all at a kids' party?" How can you get through one and not need a drink?!

indiechick · 04/07/2008 21:05

It's only an issue if dd and I ask for water. I'm not that precious, she goes to McDonalds and drinks the fruit shoots when the parties are there. I just think it you ask for water, that's what you should get.

PS My DS (18 months) has not drunk carbonated drinks yet either but I am guessing that when he reaches 4 years old I will allow him to have them on special occasion. I think there worse things for kids to have at a party eg biscuits with lots of food colourings, cheap meat things, drinks full of colourings and flavourings etc

MrsSchadenfreude · 04/07/2008 21:08

Vodka? Dreadful! Should have been gin. Did she have no idea?

brimfull · 04/07/2008 21:08

sounds like a great party to me

Slubberdekangaroomurderer · 04/07/2008 21:11

I hope it wan in Pimms No 6.

If in No 1 then tut, should've been gin.

Psychomum5 · 04/07/2008 21:11

maybe it was not lemonade...maybe it was fizzy water???

did you taste the drink, or check, before she had finished the whole lot???

just a thought is all.

back to drinking.....if you drive, you should never drink...full stop....never!!!

but I see you walked home, so it was not a problem for you, and if you were driving, then you should not have drunk it, so in that sense, not an issue.

as for alcohol at kiddies parties..I offer, and I have, I need to!!!

UnquietDad · 04/07/2008 21:13

I can't imagine a children's party without drinks for the adults. I've only ever been to one where they didn't have any - NOT EVEN TEA - and I was in a foul mood for the rest of the weekend.

indiechick · 04/07/2008 21:18

Oh my god psychomum you're right, it probably was fizzy water. I didn't drink it, some kid fell over the drinks table and it all ended up on the floor (she'd probably been drinking the pimms). Just remembered friend let her 9 year old try the pimms as well, oops, probably not a good idea.
It was a reasonable party, like unquietdad, I always appreciate being offered a drink of something at a party. Will be asking next time what's in the pimms though.

and anyway - Pimms is one of those drinks where people make up with their own 'that looks about right' quantities.

When Dh makes it it is always way stronger than when I make it.

I would never drink anything mixed and drive because you can't always tell how strong it is.But then i wouldn't drink and drive. i am shite enough sober without the added variable.

Psychomum5 · 04/07/2008 21:45

I'm right, I'm right....

gonna show DH......he reckons I am forever wrong!!!

yvonnek · 04/07/2008 22:24

shouldn't drink anything without knowing whats in it.

and should always, always check exactly whats being poured into your glass if driving.

after all. it's your license and life. your responsibility not theirs

let this be a lesson learned.

Amphibimum · 04/07/2008 22:29

dp made pimms for ds2's party last w/end. was lethal i loved it
was first party ive ever held where i actually enjoyed myself (secret being, i have found, to have absolutely everything organised in advance, and delegate wherever possible.). largely due to the pimms i feel. never really had pimms before...

yum.

dp has never heard of putting vodka in pimms, but then again, if i were concerned (ie if i were driving) id either ask, or judge for myself based on taste/effect how much, if any, to have.

CasperGhost · 04/07/2008 22:30

I would rather drink water, than drink and drive, my kids are more important to me, than alcohol. Anyone who drinks any alcohol even half a glass and then drives with their kids in the car, are irresponsible and weak willed in my opinion.

yvonnek · 04/07/2008 22:32

our group of party friends mostly stay within walking distance. so why all make up bowls of punch too.

gotta make sure the fella's are there though.

send them home early with the kids for bath time

lolol

iliketosleep · 04/07/2008 23:55

I didnt know pimms was alchoholic so had no problem letting ds 4 eat all the fruit out of the glasses from the table where my family were sitting at my cousins christening 2 weeks ago.

He had about 8 glasses worth of fruit, continued to throw a glass across the table by mistake when he went to put it down, went from standing up completly alert to flopping asleep on a chair still standing, zig zagged his way to the car on leaving, lay in bed laughing for half an hour when we got home and didnt wake up till about 11am the next morning

iliketosleep · 04/07/2008 23:56

p.s. it was first and last time, neither me nor dp drink!!
