i think 11 sounds ok.she understands it might hurt and that if she doesnt look after them theyll get infected etc.

PuppyMonkey · 04/07/2008 11:04

I had mine done at 7 (was a long time ago now though). I only have DS's, but if I had DD's I would let them have it done from around the same age.

benbon · 04/07/2008 11:07

my daughter had hers pierced about 3 months ago at claires accessories and i thought they were great it cost £12 and they had 2 women who did both ears at the same time...

11 is plenty old enough i dont see why your waiting my little girl was 4 and a half when she had them done and they look very cute....

mazzystar · 04/07/2008 11:08

I had to wait till I was 16 and then my dad took me as he was more easily worn down than my mum

I think I'd hold out till 13/14 if I could.

And I'd go to a proper jewellers with proper gold studs.

Unlike the goth tatto place round the back of oasis in brum where I went with my poor old da

TeaDr1nker · 04/07/2008 11:09

my mum had mine done when i was 6 months old, i would love to get DD done now but DP says she is too young. How young is to young?

cheesesarnie · 04/07/2008 11:13

is say 10 is the very youngest for me.dd is 8 and went through stage of asking when she was about 6 but stopped for now!i just cant imagine putting holes in her.

micci25 · 04/07/2008 11:15

i think too young is when they are too young to be aware what is going on! i waited untill dd1 asked. she asked very early and i have no idea where she got the idea of pierced ears, or peas in her ears, as she said as none of her friends had it done but she was aware what was going on and how it would be done.

with dd2 ill do the same and wait untill she asks

OrmIrian · 04/07/2008 11:18

I guess 11 is fine. Never had mine done.

My DS is 11. What about him then? He he too young? Just hypothetical as he hasn't mentioned it yet but he has said he'd like them/it done at some point.

dd1 had them done at 8, we did have hassle with P.E. and swimming though - I retrospect I wished I'd got them done just before the summer holidays.

nervousal · 04/07/2008 11:28

Too young - when you're doing it because YOU want to and not because they want to? Too young - when they aren't responsible enough to look after them? DD is 4 and a half and htere is NO WAY I would let her get hers done yet.

snorris · 04/07/2008 11:34

My eldest daughter has just had them done for a 13th birthday present. I probably would have let her when she was 11 but because of other activities where she had to take them out, there was never 6 weeks available to leave them in IYSWIM. We went to a local beauty salon for her to have it done.
Everybody is different (duh!) but personally I don't like earrings on small children and the way mine crash about I wouldn't put it past them to injure themselves!

PuppyMonkey · 04/07/2008 13:00

I reckon six months is too young. I reckon four years is too young - seeing as people asked!! it's not just that it seems a bit cruel - it looks a bit, dare I say, chavvy...?

LadyThompson · 04/07/2008 13:06

I think 11 is about right. But I am such a hypocrite - I was 8 when I had mine done, which I think is too young!

piratecat · 04/07/2008 13:09

I think i had mine doen when i was 11, my mum had hers done at the same, and loves to recount the tale of how she made me go in first to see how much it hurt.

it hurt!! it was with a needle back then.

MrsMattie · 04/07/2008 13:10

I would.

ByTheSea · 04/07/2008 13:12

I think 11 is old enough. I was 10 when I had mine done and I let DD1 get hers done when she was eight.

pointydog · 04/07/2008 13:25

Of course YANBU. Dd1 had hers done just before she turned 11. SHe chickened out when she was nearly 10.

Go to a good place, though. Some of those rubbish places whap the hole in any old place. Doesn't look good.

christywhisty · 04/07/2008 13:25

MY MIL was in her late 70's when she had hers done, then my mum decided to have hers done as well, she is was in her late 60's.

babyignoramus · 04/07/2008 13:32

I had mine done at 6 (but I did grow up in quite a ahem 'chavvy' town and it was pretty much the norm). I begged and pleaded and harassed my mum until she gave in.

Def try and go to a place where they do both ears at the same time - after I had the first one pierced I went into a screaming fit, - hysterical crying, blue in the face, the works - more from the shock than the pain I think. My mum had to practically sit on me to have the second one done as she knew it would be worse (and more painful) to take the first one out and the next day I'd be on at her to get them done again! Poor thing - she said she got so many filthy looks from people who thought she was a terrible mother...... when really I was just a brat.

pointydog · 04/07/2008 13:36

The 'good' jewellers near me only pierces age 9 and up because they had an incident of one small girl freaking out after staple number one.

MumtoPhoebeboo · 04/07/2008 14:02

YANBU. 11 is a good age. I desperately wanted my ears pierced from when I was three and was told by my mother, "not until you're 18" (which, aged three, was a long way off). I finally pierced them myself with a needle when I was eleven. They went somewhat wonky and infected. My mother found out, freaked out, told me to let them heal and then get them done properly! After that I went big-time into piercing. Had five in my ears, my nose, my tongue, my lip, my belly-button and nipple! (Now I only wear a single pair in my ears, all the rest have closed up). Consequently, I'd let my DD have hers done if she wanted to, she's seven now but isn't interested at the moment. IMO, the more the idea is repressed, the more desirable it becomes! Although, I do think that very young children with earrings do look somewhat chavvy and hope my DD waits until she's older to get hers done.

Sidge · 04/07/2008 14:10

I think 10 and over is reasonable.

Good idea to do it before the summer holidays so they are healed by the time they go back to school.

My DD1 aged 9 asked last year if she could have hers done - I said yes and explained how they do it. She went pale and said 'yuk'! Think she might wait a few years now
