Expensive vinted mistake

Mamma272 · Today 10:30

I bought a secondhand jacket for £150. It arrived and smells of perfume which I hate! I’ve washed it and it still smells.

I’ve been through this once before - I bought a charity shop jacket and found it reeked when I got home I couldn’t tolerate the smell of it. I tried so many remedies including gallons of white vinegar and even vodka! I also stored with activated charcoal and that didn’t work. I ended up spending more than the cost of the jacket and eventually returned it.

This is by far the most I’ve ever spent on clothes on vinted - I usually buy bundles of baby things that are always clean!

Do I have ground to return it? Give a 1* review? I don’t know if I have the energy to try all the remedies again and as it’s cold it’s going to take longer to dry and limit how often I can have a go.

Have you tried some oxy powder?

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · Today 10:32

Have you tried freezing it?

DuckFilledPlatitude · Today 10:32

Could you get it dry cleaned?

Cathmawr · Today 10:33

Urgh I hate the vinted smell! I like my clothes to smell like nothing. I've never encountered a smell so strong that it doesn't disappear after 2 or 3 washes max though... Hopefully second time lucky for you!

You can't return it as you've washed it. Unfortunately you'll either have to suck it up or try to sell it on yourself

CatherinedeBourgh · Today 10:37

Soak it overnight in water with bicarb in it. Gets rid of just about any smell. If you are worried about the fabric getting damaged by this, just put it in a sealed bag with a whole load of bicarb and leave for a day or two, then hoover and wash.

It does really work.

Nothing will be solved by leaving a one star review. Could you ask to return it? Do you think you might just be really sensitive to smells? Perfume that doesn’t come out after all that washing, soaking, vodka, charcoal… it all seems abit excessive!

I don’t normally wear perfume. I just don’t like it.

Hmm, steam cleaning is probably a no-no too then.

I'd try the bicarb solutions pp have suggested, and then if you get a dry day, hang the jacket up in the fresh air for as long as you can.

Awlier · Today 10:42

Erg. But no perfume lasts forever, it will be ok eventually.

If it's up to the challenge hang it outside for a week. Preferably let it get rained on. You will get there in the end.

£150 for a second hand polyester coat? Also made in china in some sweatshop as well?

Why not buy a good quality British made coat from a small designer or maker here? That isn’t polyester.

I think I tried bicarb with my previous jacket too (used a whole tub of it) and it didn’t work then, but I’ll give it a go now.

Then buying items like coats unseen really isn’t for you if you are so sensitive.

It has some specialist features that I needed. Not a brand name. RRP is £300+. Please don’t be so judgemental. I generally buy secondhand and not off primark etc and also try to stick to natural materials so I can minimise my carbon footprint etc.

I almost never treat myself to clothes so I’m pretty gutted. Please don’t pile on just because you can.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · Today 10:49

i am also shocked at spending £150 on a second hand polyester coat. I can’t see how you justified that in the first place!

anyway, agree, put it outdoors plus another couple of washes. Spread these out, wash again now, hang out until Tuesday, wash again then, hang out until Thursday /Friday when wash again and hang out until this time next week. It’ll have cleared the smell, or at least taken it right down.

(I’m currently looking at a cashmere and wool mix coat I’ve favourited that’s £80 and not sure I can justify that price for 2nd hand coat, given people are paying £150 for second hand polyester, perhaps the cashmere and wool one is a bargain after all!)

PinkFrogss · Today 10:49

Can you put it out in the garden (when it’s not raining) fresh air certainly can’t hurt

Mamma272 · Today 10:50

I’ll give the remedies a go but I’m going to give it away otherwise - don’t want to subject another person to this. Not made of money, but i just won’t be able to buy anything to replace it.

Well it might alert other buyers that the seller has items that have a smell.

I would contact the seller, and say i can't remove the smell and what would they prefer to do. Make clear what the options are, eg, return, low feedback, partial refund
