Expensive vinted mistake

Mamma272 · Today 10:30

I bought a secondhand jacket for £150. It arrived and smells of perfume which I hate! I’ve washed it and it still smells.

I’ve been through this once before - I bought a charity shop jacket and found it reeked when I got home I couldn’t tolerate the smell of it. I tried so many remedies including gallons of white vinegar and even vodka! I also stored with activated charcoal and that didn’t work. I ended up spending more than the cost of the jacket and eventually returned it.

This is by far the most I’ve ever spent on clothes on vinted - I usually buy bundles of baby things that are always clean!

Do I have ground to return it? Give a 1* review? I don’t know if I have the energy to try all the remedies again and as it’s cold it’s going to take longer to dry and limit how often I can have a go.

If you prefer to stick to natural materials why did you buy a polyester coat ? Doesn't make sense.

Because it of the specialist features! You don’t get waterproofing in a wool coat. The point I was making was that I wasn’t buying cheap fast fashion for a ridiculous price, I had reasons to buy a coat that I wouldn’t normally buy.

You should have put a trigger warning on the title, @Mamma272 .
'TW: mentions polyester.' Smile

God people on here drive me mad with natural fabrics. Polyester isn't the devil. Some people can't cope with wool of any type, lots of natural materials aren't warm/ waterproof enough, and £150 for a second hand high quality ski coat, for example, is definitely not unheard of. Stop being judgemental because you want everything you wear to be cotton, linen or wool.

With green fairy liquid it's a degreaser, so I tend to use it for stain removal. I've not heard of it being an effective soaker before, so looking forward to that information coming back- always good to have another tool.

I personally would give it a good day long soak in a bucket with your weapon of choice. Is napisan bleach? If it's not, that might be a good try.
Then id put it in the washer on a prewash then long slow cotton wash, with the max amount of rinses, with Dettol laundry liquid cleaner, as that's good at removing gym smells, and a bio washing powder.

Seajaye · Today 13:23

How was the coat described? If it was described ' as new' and it wasn't because of the perfume small use the review mechanism. If it was faulty or dirty then seek at return. You only have 49 hours with Vinted to report an issue and initiate a return but it's usually straightforward if you can deal with it the sellerifht offer a partial.refund to cover dry cleaning but you do ha e right to return it and get full refund I streaf if it's not as described.

koffielepeltje · Today 13:23

OP, what are the washing instructions for the jacket? Should it only be washed at 30C with soap flakes or a liquid soap, as opposed to detergent?

anon2022anon · Today 13:23

And also, you can definitely sell on if it's not right for you. Most people aren't sensitive to smells, it's not mouldy, someone might also be hunting for it.

Wildfairy · Today 13:24

God some people are so so weird on here about man made fabrics, like the op said she bought a coat made of candy floss.

polyester comes in different grades of quality and has its place, I’m fine with many materials, including polyester.

op, I have bought things from vinted that smell of perfume, I understand whay you mean, I don’t know why sellers do it, but I suspect some actually spray it before they send it, and it’s v hard to get rid of.

i bought a Reiss jumper the other week, it was my fave jumper and discontinued and I’d shrunk it, so I found one on vinted, when I got it it was in fantastic condition but reeked of perfume. I also don’t like smelling someone else’s perfume on my clothes either, it’s alien, I washed if and it lessened but was still there, I have found airing it has also helped. It will go away, don’t worry,

I’ve no idea why people are being horrible to you about it.

Do you think I didn’t already feel bad? That after 5, 6 pages a few posters wouldn’t have already told me I was silly? Maybe read the whole thread if you have time to post on it too.

I’ve read it. And to be fair, I don’t think you’re silly. I think you saw a coat, liked it, presumably knew the material and you bought it. I can’t believe anyone would buy it, but that doesn’t make you silly, it just means we differ in our clothing preferences!
I think you should ask for a return and, if you have no joy, try the various helpful suggestions from posters on this thread. Good luck 🤞🏻

If its been longer then 2 days, you won't have a leg to stand on, unfortunately.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · Today 13:33

@Mamma272 my mum.has always sworn by white vinegar to get any kind of unwanted smell out of clothes. You might need to wash it after to.remove the vinegar smell but it usually works.

Also you've dealt really well with a ton of unhelpful, judgement replies. 💐.

likeafishneedsabike · Today 13:34

Amazing suggestions from PPs that I didn’t know about (eg bicarbonate in a sealed bag with the item of clothing).
OP, you might be better to stick to the chazza shops instead of Vinted. I get way more pre loved stuff in person as I like to try it on (my local charities have a changing booth). In your case you could take it into the booth to have a sniff!

Ilovelifeverymuch · Today 13:35

Mamma272 · Today 10:47

I know, it was obviously a mistake.

If you know that then why do you want to give them 1*?

And given you know you're sensitive to smell and the last time you bought an item that smelled of perfume nothing you tried removed the smell of the perfume why didn't you just return it immediately before washing because now you've washed it and done other things to it, you should not be returning it.

You return items as is not after you've washed and done treatments to it.

This 👆🏻works miracles

Agree with this poster! This stuff is fantastic.
use this and then hand the coat outside for a few hours.
if you are extremely sensitive to smells I’d forget buying clothes from Vinted

Aydel · Today 13:38

Can you hang it outside? I’ve got rid of cigarette smoke smells from curtains this way.

Pluto46 · Today 13:43

CatherinedeBourgh · Today 10:37

Soak it overnight in water with bicarb in it. Gets rid of just about any smell. If you are worried about the fabric getting damaged by this, just put it in a sealed bag with a whole load of bicarb and leave for a day or two, then hoover and wash.

It does really work.

I can attest to this too. I bought some Laura Ashley small silk lampshades from Ebay and they absolutely reeked of smoke and tobacco. Bought a large sack of sodium bicarbonate off Amazon and left them sealed in a bag full of the powder for a couple of weeks and then took them out and hoovered them off and it totally got all the smell out. You can reuse the powder for multiple cleaning and deodourising applications thereafter.

Passaggressfedup · Today 13:50

It's your fault OP. If you are very sensitive to perfume, you should have asked the seller first to confirm she never wear perfume with it.
You are free to sell it on.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · Today 13:52

@Mamma272 - I see that you hung a previous garment out for a week - I wonder if you could try hanging this one out for longer? The only reason I say this is that we had to air things from my mum’s house for ages - she was a heavy smoker, and when she died, there were some things I wanted, as a memory of her, and not all of them could be washed. It took some time, but they did eventually lose the smell of cigarette smoke.

If there is somewhere you could hang it to air, and leave it for weeks or even months, it might lose the perfume smell, and you would have the coat you want - if it would be worth waiting all that time for you, of course.

Laura95167 · Today 14:04

I dont think you can return it if you washed it. Especially cant if you've already accepted it

It's not necessarily perfume. I bought something from Ebay and it had been washed or sprayed with something and it just wouldn't wash out.

madaboutpurple · Today 14:14

I'm sure this was covered recently and the solution was wash the item, hang outside for a day or two on a washing line.

Freebliss · Today 14:18

Ive only ever used vinted once.
I got 2 tank tops and the smell was horrendous, I put them in the bin.

Id rather buy new.

Shadesofscarlett · Today 14:21

can you not return not as described?

SunnyAgain · Today 14:25

I haven't got any suggestions OP but can fully empathise. I've had items that smell of perfume, and Febreze which I don't like and also makes me wonder if they are trying to mask unclean clothing.

The worst for me was when I bought a cardigan on Vinted. I went to collect it from the InPost locker (located outside a shop, so in an outdoor environment) and as soon as the locker door opened I could smell an artificial fragrance. When I opened up the package, the seller had wrapped a scented tumble drier sheet in with the clothing. The smell was so strong, it was really unpleasant and made the whole room smell. I guess the seller liked it and thought it would give the clothing a nice scent!
I left a good review as the cardigan was as described, but privately messaged to say that perhaps I was sensitive to fragrances but I found the smell overpowering, and it might be good to check with the buyer before including a drier sheet inside the package in future. I didn't get a reply. I washed and aired the cardigan several times and luckily the smell went away eventually.

Good luck with yours!

NotSmallButFunSize · Today 14:26

I can't honestly imagine a time I would spend £150 on something to then give it away immediately because it smells of perfume??

Could be worse - could smell of BO or shit!!

More money than sense!

OP, I was coming to say this too.

It’s an expensive, rare treat for you so don’t just give it away.

All smells go eventually. It just might take a bit of patience and time. There’s loads of good tips on here and I would alternate those with periods hung outside. So for example, try the bicarbonate thing, dry, hang outside, do the bicarbonate thing again, then back outside.

It might take a bit of persistence but for £150 it’s probably worth it. Fingers crossed for you - it’s rotten when you think you’ve treated yourself to have such a disappointment!
