That parents taking babies on log flume rides are a sandwich short of a picnic?

At Disneyland and the new Frozen ride has a 30ft drop. My bum lifted as we tipped over the edge. A baby went on the boat before us, I was terrified those parents would lose grip. The baby had to be placed with its back against its mother and legs under the bar, it was no older than 3 months old. Just because you can, doesnt mean you should!

Baffled that Disney allow it given that you have to remove ears and hats!

Two parents, a yoing child and the baby so parent pass could have been used.

But that's exactly why its unsafe.

No that’s why it’s surprising but that doesn’t follow that it’s unsafe.
I haven’t seen any reported accidents since it opened.

WhereDoBrokenHeartsGo · Yesterday 21:12

I don’t think anyone is going to forget they have a baby in their arms and fling it out of the boat! The drop is pretty tame on Frozen and Pirates.

MrsFionaCharming · Yesterday 22:57

My then 4 month old slept through it. He was in the sling though, so at no risk of being dropped.

So you didn’t feel quite awful enough not to do it again?!

I think she was a bit older, and we all went on together. Also they are very different.

You haven’t really framed the ride well here though, it’s an incredibly gentle ride, and the drop is slow and backwards. It is a little over 9m but the actual angle is not steep.

Most of all, it’s not a log flume like anyone would picture at all

I feel this is the case! Not everyone realises there is a huge drop and whilst there are signs I think that people don't understand how big it is because of the nature of the ride and staff don't seem to warn. I think they place babies in middle rows but thats the only mitigation!

My DC commented how the teenage boys in front who were all recording suddenly lowered their phones en masse at the drop, its that instinctive reflex to protect yourself that worries me, even though I know the strength of a mothers instinct.

There is no huge drop…

You’ve never been to Disney world before have you? Lol

Yes, all of them actually, but never once bought fake Mickey/Minney ears !! & even if I did they would be THE ears not MY/YOUR ears.

WitchesBritches · Today 07:35

NoShitHere · Yesterday 19:43

Your Disney ears 😆

I’m with you OP, never ever would I have risked this!

🤣🤣🤣🤣 yeah never once bought those when I've been. So they didn't occur to me, but if I had written that I would've written as THE ears. Not MY ears!! 🤣🤣

I’ve also never bought Disney ears but it was very clear what OP meant. I see you’re being pedantic but for that to work well, you’d have to read what OP said correctly. OP didn’t say ‘remove your ears’ they said ‘remove ears’

It was a lighthearted comment which has been turned into something else.

Maybe if you're the sort of person that buys Mickey Mouse ears, it was obvious what she meant but as I don't, it wasn't, I actually thought it was just a typo, but I couldn't think what for it was just a lighthearted comment. Bloody hell.

obviously, they weren't going to ask you to remove your actual ears🙄🙇🏻‍♀️

It wasn't clear at all, I assumed it was a funny typo!

I’ve never been to Disney, but does every adult there seriously walk around wearing Mickey Mouse ears? 😬. Must be quite a sight.

PuppiesProzacProsecco · Today 09:06

Why would anyone even WANT to take a baby on a ride like this? JFC it's not as if they're "making memories" at 3 months old.

Well I am not saying it’s right but presumably the only reason they’re taking the baby is that the parents want to go on the ride and there is no one to look after it.

Disney don’t have the greatest safety record in recent decades- I’ve just finished reading a book called the McKinsey effect and they were one of the case studies. Cost cutting has led to a number of serious/ fatal incidents

SJM1988 · Today 09:16

There is no way a company as big as Disney would risk a lawsuit like this - they would put a height limit on it if there was any chance of there being an issue. But then again....someone else said they don't have the best safety record? Surely they wouldn't be open if that was the case. maybe I'm, just too trusting

And in the parents defence, if its your first time, you haven't researched anything and taking the information provided by Disney at face value....how would they know until after the ride?

Yep they’ve risked it (and lost) many times. Staff and customers have died due to poor safety.

At DLP? Not in my experience. The odd Disney adult might, but the ears are mostly worn by kids there.

At Tokyo Disneyland or Disneysea, yeah pretty much. I felt a bit weird walking around without any. 😂

ACynicalDad · Today 09:54

I question why people take babies there at all, unless they have big siblings.

They went through a period where there were quite a few nasty accidents and deaths at their parks in Florida due to poor maintenance practices. Some of them really horrific. Their safety record has been very good in recent years though and I don’t think there has ever been a fatal accident involving a guest at DLP.

IdleGossip · Today 10:20

Have been to Disney parks in the US with kids and they are so, so hot on safety. They measure children for height and err on the side of caution every time. They are so scared of getting sued if someone gets hurt.

BirdLandedonmyHead · Today 10:23

I looked up the ride. Its a boat ride. A log flume is a completely different thing!

Oddly they dont allow pregnant women on it though.

user1471538275 · Today 10:28

It doesn't need to be a fatal accident to cause harm or pain.

If a baby's legs are trapped between a bar and their mother and their mother's weight is transferred upwards whilst the ride goes downwards it will hurt the baby.

If they don't allow pregnant women on it, they will be a good reason for that.

MyArtfulGreySloth · Today 10:32

No one falls out or gets crushed on Splash Mountain ffs 🙄 don’t you have anything better to moan about?
