To ask for a virtual hug

My dad passed away on Monday. Although he’d been ill for a while, I never expected him to go as quickly as he did. He’d had his tea and we were chatting away as normal, then within the space of about three minutes, he seemed to get so confused. It was like someone had flicked a switch. He then fell asleep and never woke up again. I just can’t get my head around how it all happened so quickly. I just don’t understand it.

Im so sad and confused. Obviously he wasnt well, but honeslty looking at him and talking to him, you wouldn't have thought he was ill, and certainly not hours away from passing.

Oh sweetheart, those feelings make perfect sense, of course they do. Even those of us who have a long time to prepare find it a sudden shock at the end. I honestly think however much we try to intellectualise it, we cannot imagine how we will feel when it actually happens and that overrides everything. It's the sudden wrench - I've always said that grief is love that has nowhere to go because that person isn't there anymore. I don't know if that helps at all right now, but we're here for anything you want to talk about, and I hope it goes without saying that I am so very sorry for your loss. Talk about any and everything that will help you right now and definitely don't be in a rush to push past any feelings, everything you feel is valid and I am so sorry that it's so hard.

It’s such a shock, even when you know the person is unwell. Sending you a hug. x

Aah sending you a big hug OP . My darling Mum died suddenly a few years ago and I was absolutely heartbroken. Now I am so thankful that she died that way ,no pain,no suffering and no loss of dignity. The next few weeks will be surreal but eventually the shock will diminish and you can remember the good times. Xx

A big hug from me. It is hard to make sense of death even if the person was very ill. I think it is the finality of it. If it is any comfort it sounds like he wasn't in pain and that you were with him. I hope you get love and support in the coming weeks and months. It is hard to lose a parent even as an adult ((((((( )))))))

Big hugs OP. You was there with him, it was quick and painless. It doesn't seem possible right now, but these facts will be a big comfort to you soon. You need to take some gentle care of yourself now. Whatever you feel, its all valid.

It’s such horrible shock for those left behind but I hope you can take some comfort that your lovely Dad passed peacefully and was unaware.

Hi Apricot,

It just goes that way sometimes. Our beloved dog died one day after his walk, when he had been running around. An hour later, he got up and died on the floor. And my friends dad out is coat on to go out, sat in his chair and died then.

I think you are in shock still. And you didn't get to prepare did you, or say goodbye. It just happened as it did, one minute there, the next no longer there.

Are you off work? What are you doing today?
