AIBU about nursery parents Car?

There is a parent at DD’s (3) nursery who drives a Tesla.
He has set the locking sound of the vehicle to a snarling dog.
DD has always been wary of dogs, mainly because she hasn’t been exposed to them as my dog died before she was born.

Recently, she has been starting to get over this and been willing to look at dogs, and even pat a couple that she knows well.

However this morning this vehicle parked next to us and she heard the snarling and became very upset.
I’ve got to admit, I did a double take (the car was behind me) As I thought it was a real dog going mental inside someone’s car.

Am I being unreasonable to think that you must be absolutely brain-dead to think that is an appropriate sound anywhere, let alone and nursery full of children?

The sort of person who enjoys playing the sound of aggressive dogs going nuts is going to be a bit brainless and won't care about scaring small kids unfortunately

HormonalRollercoaster · 28/10/2026 12:45

It’s the sound connected to the Halloween mode in a Tesla. Chances are the kids like the mode so they have that activated inside the car (which makes the car appear as a ghost etc on the GPS, wheelie bins look like mummies etc) that sound is linked as the locking sound. I usually have a clown horn honking so was surprised myself when it growled at me! I wouldn’t expect them to be using it for longer if that’s any consolation. And the Christmas mode lock sound is jingling bells so you have that nicer experience to look forward to!

Oh bore off. Is it his choice of car that upsets you more. Why?? So what if he has the money to spend on whatever the hell he likes. Stop with the green eyes and grow up. The comment of immaturity stands more now with this juvenile response than it did as I wrote it originally. So thanks for making my point for me

I have no strong view on Tesla drivers (my opinion about him being a wanker would apply to anyone who had an obnoxious sound set up on their car regardless of the make, and wouldn’t apply to Teslas that didn’t make the noise). But it’s very tedious when people assume that if someone doesn’t like something, it simply must be envy.

I'd be a bit pissed too, my little boy is blind. He would expect car noises in a car park but a snarling dog would really unsettle him (and yes thanks, he is very resilient)

Yes, it's funny how people expect small kids to be resilient about the sound of aggressive dogs, yet they themselves are not resilient enough to cope with being told it's selfish.

Greenqueen40 · 28/10/2026 12:51

It's not a dog snarling. It's the Halloween mode which is meant to be a monster - very amusing actually. Loving the Tesla hate, best car I have ever owned.

Megapintofwine · 28/10/2026 12:53

LostWitch · 28/10/2026 10:40

well you know he's a twat, he drives a Tesla for goodness sake

Aren’t you just delightful

BelleDeJourRose · 28/10/2026 12:53

It's very much normal for a small child to be scared of the sound of aggressive dogs. Would be weird to try and teach them not to mind it to pander to adults with fragile egos.

Bitzee · 28/10/2026 13:05

It’ll be the halloween mode. Just tell your kid it’s not a dog it’s a monster noise because the car is getting ready for Halloween and isn’t it exciting it’s almost Halloween. Next week it’ll be back to normal unless he’s decided it’s time for Christmas mode and to crack out the jingle bells.

they like of people who choose to spend their money on big fancy show off cars. Just as people are allowed to drive big fancy show off cars because they hold the view that it makes them look good.

oh I don’t know how a came up with such an assumption.

Heard one do this for the first time the other day. As if those cars could be any tackier!

Well, I suppose there could be a variant that booms 'I am an arrogant jerk' but it's not really necessary is it?

HappyLizard23 · 28/10/2026 13:25

IMO it’s a very strange choice of him but he’s free to do it. Your DD needs to learn that the world doesn’t revolve around her and her fears, there will be things she doesn’t like and it’s good to teach her that from go.

sugarapplelane · 28/10/2026 13:32

The guys a prat, but would be an immature prat if he changed it to a fart!

But you need to find your way through this. You need to manage your DD’s reaction by managing yours.

savoycabbage · 28/10/2026 13:39

When my dd was in nursery in Australia we shared the carpark with a brothel.

You’ve just got to get on with it really. Presumably his children like the dog sounds or he wouldn’t have it on.

They have the right to do it but it is weird to do it. At least we have ways of weeding out who the morons are in society.

No it’s having your car make a noise that’s intended to scare people that I think is immature. Like the lady upthread said, it would really scare her son who’s blind, for example. It might scare old people. It would probably scare me!

Unless you think intimidating people makes you big and clever?

Ok so now the car thing. This is fascinating. You do realise that it’s possible to disagree with someone without being jealous of them? I could afford a fancy car, but hell would freeze over before I’d waste my money on one. I’m happy if things are functional and don’t feel the need to demonstrate my status with material items, or a barking car. And I pity people who do.

You’re not doing anything to change my suspicion that fancy car owners are deluded: they are so convinced their fancy car is good, they can’t understand that other people think it can be lame and materialistic and a bit show offy.

Ffs the man has kids. It’s more likely they’ve been playing around and he’s picked it at their request. Quite frankly I would be teaching my kids exactly what it is and not feeding into irrational fears

BlondeBanshee · 28/10/2026 17:00

TheNumberfaker · 28/10/2026 10:28

DH has a Tesla (company car) and there is a Halloween setting where you can get the car to make a monster snarling sound when you lock it. He had it on for a couple of days and made a few people laugh when they came to the door 🤷🏻‍♀️

I would take it as a learning experience to help build up resilience.

This. It’s just good fun. Fuck sake. Take it up with Elon if you’re that bothered but the world can’t stop doing its own thing because your DD is scared of dogs.

itsgettingweird · 28/10/2026 17:01

Yes he’s a dick.

but he and they exist everywhere.

You have to teach dd she cannot control others actions - just her reaction to it.

id be teaching her to roll her eyes at him 😆

I could teach you what an airhorn sounds like. Doesn’t mean you wouldn’t jump if I sounded one behind you!

Being wary of the sound of a snarling creature is perfectly rational. Living in a world where we all have to alter our perception of reality because a man wants his car to sound like that - crazy!

FourEyesGood · 28/10/2026 17:22

I find it utterly mind-boggling that anyone finds novelty car noises funny. Have these people never experienced actual comedy?

blythet · 28/10/2026 17:26

He sounds like an absolute dick. Why would anyone want their car to make that noise??! It screams “look at me, I’m a Tesla wanker”

however at the same time, I don’t think there’s anything you can do. He’s free to do that if he wants….if he’s choosing to look like a tit that’s on him

Biddybobsleigh · 28/10/2026 20:29

mumumental · 28/10/2026 09:00

A huge dick.

Absolutely, who does that? Scare all of the kids AND adults shitless, why? It's not an everyday sound children need to get used to, wtf? Its more likely to traumatise them and give them a lifetime of PTSD.

Comesround · 28/10/2026 20:32

I would tell him that it's an upsetting sound. I don't think I would like a man who chose to do that. He will have known how some people would react.

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 28/10/2026 20:55

BadgerBadgerBear · 28/10/2026 11:14

Haven’t people grown up yet beyond the “everyone who drives a BMW/Audi/tesla/whatever is a dick” thing?

Ah, have you got a Tesla?
