AIBU to be furious at DS15 over his behaviour and holiday footwear choices?

We’ve just landed in Florida for a week-long family holiday. There’s me, DH, DS13 and DS15. We spent a fortune before we came out getting everyone kitted out with new clothes and brand-new trainers—including a lovely pair of Nike Dunks for DS15.

We picked out his travel outfit together: hoodie, baggy joggers, and his box-fresh Dunks with classic white Nike socks. Looked great.

Fast forward to checking into the hotel last night. DS15 is sitting on the armchair, his joggers ride up, and I notice... no socks. (He spent all summer going sockless in old knackered Vans and Astro turf boots which I didn't mind because they were already ruined, but still!). Anyway, I went into their room later and it absolutely reeked. Turns out he wore his brand-new Dunks with no socks for the entire journey here! 🤢

This morning, before heading to the theme parks, we wanted a family photo. DH and DS13 look great in fresh shorts and new trainers with ankle socks. DS15? Sockless again.

I gently pointed out that:

  1. He’s going to get horrific blisters in the Florida heat.
  2. He’s going to completely ruin his new Dunks in days.
  3. The trainer smell is already vile.

He kicked off in front of everyone, telling me to "grow up," "get a life," and "what’s it got to do with me?!"

Later, I popped back to the room for suncream and thought I'd take him a pair of trainer socks just in case. Had a quick nosey in his suitcase... there are literally zero socks in his entire bag. He has actively planned and packed to go sockless for the whole week.

DH says to leave him to it, but we are the ones sharing a room and hire car with his melting, stinking feet! AIBU to be furious with his behaviour and choices!

It starts with going sockless, pretty soon its drugs, violent crime and a life in tatters.

Praying for you.

Alas, the laugh emoji is gone. I so feel this is absolutely blooming true. OP obv thinks it is.

Does everyone really need all new outfits for holidays?
Why on earth are you picking out his travel outfit together? Are you an influencer?

speakingofart · Yesterday 16:49

Bloody hell. How is this your biggest problem?

So many AI Generated nonesense threads on here atm

Pick your battles. Go to a supermarket, buy some trainer deodorant. Insist, if nothing else, he uses it morning and night, and leave his trainers on the balcony overnight. 😁 This has the ability to ruin your and everyone else's holiday. This is not the hill to die on. If he gets blisters, you can do the "I told you so" dance....

I don’t pick outfits or ‘agree’ on outfits for my 8 year old, stop babying him at 15 years old! If his shoes are ruined, or his feet smell or hurt- then thats the natural consequence for not wearing socks.
Will you still be babying him to this extent when he is 18, because you have to let him have autonomy at some point and figure things out for himself; it doesn’t just magically happen.

I’m not sure someone taking photos of their family in clean shorts and trainers with socks is going to create the kind of following that gives them influencer status 😂

You are the 15 year old and I claim my £5.

What a load of AI twaddle.

I don't think OP got what she wanted here, or maybe she just wanted to say she was in Florida. Anyway, she's not come back.

You sound overly invested in a teenager’s clothing choices - picking out outfits together? Really??

I hate socks but my trainers don't smell. I can't believe you are picking outfits together at 15.

Refusing to wear socks is probably the only bit of control this kid has.

SillySeal · Yesterday 16:56

He will soon learn as I bet his feet will be killing by the end of tomorrow, if not today and he will end up asking for socks!

Id go buy some socks and some of them odor eaters for in the shoes.

Annoying as it is I wouldn't let it ruin the family holiday.

I have a 15 year old son.

Sending love and strength.

I had two. And I have to confess, they took socks because I packed them. God knows what would have been left out if I’d left them to it.

Maybe I have low standards 😂
I meant more that picking out a matching travel outfit seems quite extra…? Is that normal if you have a 15 year old boy?

Maray1967 · Yesterday 16:57

But I didn’t pick their outfits - just made sure they’d got enough clothes with them.

Focus on having a good time and less on the photo images …

There is no way mine would have worn matching clothes. Not a chance.

I've never worn socks my trainers don't smell, and my feet are clean!
Also, you need trainers for Disney/Universal plus other parks, 4 of us did them in June in flip-flops and sliders! No sore feet, no blisters and cool.

iamnotalemon · Yesterday 17:02

Why on earth would anyone choose to wear brand new trainers for lots of walking, let alone without socks! But he will soon learn. Sorry if it ruins the aesthetic but you are being unreasonable for having a travel outfit.

My partner forgot to pack pants on our first holiday together 🤣

lessglittermoremud · Yesterday 17:05

You helped him pick his travel outfit?!
I can only imagine my eldest son’s face if I started ‘helping’ picking out an outfit/clothes and he’s a similar age.
As long as they shower regularly, put on clean clothes and occasionally attended a barbers, I literally don’t care what they are wearing.
Im sure the photo looks just fine, why does it matter if he wasn’t wearing socks?
If he wants to have stinking trainers, sweaty feet and blisters let him crack on, I wouldn’t battle about it….
Place the shoes out on the balcony if you have one or in the bathroom and close the door. Give them a spray with some odour stuff when you get home and tell him if they keep stinking they can be kept out in the shed.
He shouldn’t have been rude to you and that’s a separate issue but you lost me at helping him pick his outfits and being concerned how a photo looked.

freezingmytoesoff · Yesterday 17:09

You sound...odd. He is 15, if he doesn't want to wear socks then that's his choice, if the shoes that belong to him smell then that's up to him. You can always ask him to leave them outside.

Alittlefrustrated · Yesterday 17:11

Perhaps he doesn’t like wearing socks. It’s hardly up there with drink, drugs, and knife crime.

I agree, as a fellow mother if a 15yo DS.
One who has refused to wear anything except £4 black PE shorts for a few years, until the last few weeks. That was regardless of weather, environment or company.
