Would this annoy you?

Totally inconsequential as it relates to a long-ago ex, but it came to mind this evening.

I think I am (or rather was) quite likely U, but this used to really wind me up.

In order to clean his glasses he would first wind about a dozen sheets of toilet paper around his hand. He would use roughly half of one sheet to (ineffectively) clean the glasses. He would then throw the toilet paper away (wasteful as it was still basically clean). He would then flush the toilet (wasteful and unnecessary). Finally he would not wash his hands after flushing.

Would that annoy anyone else?

The waste is annoying but why would you expect him to wash his hands in those circumstances? This alone makes me wonder whether this is genuine.

because the flush is used by people after wiping or holding their penis but before washing hands…I feel like this is obvious.

In that case doesn't it bother you that when someone has a shit those same hands will touch the tap when they go to wash them? Does everyone in your house wash the tap after use?

Don’t you have a tap where you push it up (touch underneath) to turn on and push it down (touch on top) to turn it off?

Everyone in my house is me and my cat, and I usually turn it off with my elbow (I did say I was germphobic). I'm not sure what the cat does; I've never asked her.

The point of my question was if you were genuinely concerned about the amount of germs on a flush mechanism it would be something you wiped clean regularly - and definitely after YOU had touched it after having a poo.

You can't say it's something so germ ridden that just someone touching it gives you the ick if you don't actually do anything to mitigate the issue.

I mitigate the issue by aways washing my hands after I've touched it.

Just buy a glass cleaning kit.

Under a tenner, from Boots.

Have you missed the point…it’s an ex, not her who that cleans glasses this way

RedSpotTeaPot · 26/10/2026 10:06

People on MN seem genuinely terrified of toilet germs.

I also feel that if it's so obviously a source of germs that can cause illness, that you would automatically clean the flush after each use - just like a knife or board used to prepare chicken.

OP might have don’t that, but she doesn’t know if her ex had before pressing it.

Not sure why people find it unreasonable to wash their hands after using the flush on the toilet

My point still stands. If it annoyed the OP the soultion was straightforward.

I could never regard a toilet as anything other than dirty, even if it had been freshly cleaned. Consequently I'd never leave clean towels on the lid, for example. Perhaps that makes me weird/obsessive, I don't know, but it doesn't sound like I'm alone.

OP's level of germphobia is more annoying than her ex's slightly odd behaviour.

OP fixating on one slightly weird action from several years ago when she's not even with the guy any more makes her even weirder than him.

To answer the question, I would be a little baffled and not entirely approving, but I wouldn't be so annoyed that I'd start a thread on the internet about it even at the time let alone years later.

NotNowMadam · 26/10/2026 12:34

Yes this would annoy me. There's something so infuriatingly thick about taking twelve sheets of loo roll and using only half of one of those sheets to clean the surface area of a soup spoon.

It would wind me up.

I had an ex who used to make himself a pint glass full of squash and chug it in two gulps as if that made him really manly or something. I can still remember seeing his distorted teeth through the bottom of the glass and get the ick even now. I was probably being very U to get so annoyed by it, but he was a dickhead in lots of other ways and the pint glass thing just somehow summed it all up in one action.

I don't. I have tradional British pillar taps. A hot one and a cold one with cross head handles. So do many homes, public toilets etc.

Yeah, you've got a phobia. If you regard the lid of a toilet as 'dirty' when it's just been cleaned and can't place a towel on it, that's a very irrational fear that tips into a phobia/OCD territory.

The fact that you've remembered this one tiny, inconsequential thing about your ex from years ago and are still ruminating on it to the extent that you want to discuss it also suggests a rather obsessive anxiety about germs and an abnormal level of discomfort around this stuff.

BillieWiper · 26/10/2026 12:42

Surely you use a special shammy cloth or whatever it's called? You should've bought him one for his birthday or Xmas.

It would annoy me yeah. Just because it makes so little sense.

Not denying OCD, but I will say that if it had simply been a matter of not washing hands after flushing I wouldn't have started a thread about it. It was all the other bits as well.

But then after you've washed your hands, you then have to turn off the taps... which you and everyone else in the house previously touched with the unwashed hands you just touched the flush with. So why are you worried about your toilet flush but not your taps? There's no logic/rationality to your fear. It's not actually based on genuine risk, it's based entirely on you having a skewed perception of what 'dirty' is.

'All those other bits' - what, wasting a few sheets of bog roll now and again?! Hardly the end of the world, is it?

The fact that you think any of this is worth discussing with others, especially long after you've split up with the man who did it, really does strike me as an odd fixation to still be even thinking about, let alone needing others' opinions on.

No, he had the bathroom door wide open and I stopped to say something to him, witnessed what he was doing and realised it must be a regular habit.

How did you realise it was a regular habit from seeing it once?

I guess either just from knowing him or from asking if he always did that. Can't remember.

I don't generally stand with my kecks round my ankles till I have washed my hands and I suspect OP doesn't either.

So does any clothing that pre-washed hands have come into contact have to be changed before sitting on the settee?

Where do you draw the line?

But the OP isn’t saying she doesn’t clean it. But if there are two people in the home and she cleans it every single time she uses it then there’s still someone else using and not cleaning it, so it is still dirty 🙄

Ah…that’s the less hygienic way. In a house it’s fine because you know who is touching them and how often you’re cleaning them, but I can’t stand them in public toilets. I turn them off with tissue.
