Would this annoy you?

Totally inconsequential as it relates to a long-ago ex, but it came to mind this evening.

I think I am (or rather was) quite likely U, but this used to really wind me up.

In order to clean his glasses he would first wind about a dozen sheets of toilet paper around his hand. He would use roughly half of one sheet to (ineffectively) clean the glasses. He would then throw the toilet paper away (wasteful as it was still basically clean). He would then flush the toilet (wasteful and unnecessary). Finally he would not wash his hands after flushing.

Would that annoy anyone else?

yep, any waste would.

Isittimeformynapyet · 26/10/2026 00:04

Not washing his hands after would not bother me - I wouldn't even think about it - but the loo roll boxing glove would piss me right off.

My friend lodged at mine for a while and was similarly profligate with the loo roll I paid for and I'm still miffed about it because I never said anything.

5foot5 · 26/10/2026 00:16

The waste is annoying but why would you expect him to wash his hands in those circumstances? This alone makes me wonder whether this is genuine.

Endoadnowarrior · 26/10/2026 01:42

It would also wind me up because you're not supposed to use anything other than a soft cloth to clean glasses!
Tissues, kitchen roll, toilet roll - any paper based product - should never be used as it can cause scratches.

SuddenlyBecoming · 26/10/2026 02:18

Anyone who touches a toilet and then doesn't wash their hands in hot soapy water is gross in my opinion. Not much better than not washing are the people who put the tips of their fingers under water and done yuk. Toilet paper I would let go

Because he had touched the flush mechanism which people touch after having a shit.

Do people really spend their time making up stuff like this??

Couldn't bring myself to care about any of that tbh

The waste would annoy the shit out of me, but not washing his hands wouldn't bother me, in fact if he did I'd see it as more waste.

tomorrowfollowstoday · 26/10/2026 07:29

In the grand scheme of things, when you compare it to all the truly awful things people do, I think you are being petty about the paper.

It seems a weird way to do this, but it just falls into the category of 'small quirks'.

The hand washing bit matters I guess.

zoeslim · 26/10/2026 07:54

No

MajorSamanthaCarter · 26/10/2026 07:56

Were you monitoring his every move, I wouldn't have a clue what someone else was doing in the bathroom.

Can I ask if you always clean your flush mechanism after you have had a shit?

I don't think I ever framed it as "truly awful"!

No, he had the bathroom door wide open and I stopped to say something to him, witnessed what he was doing and realised it must be a regular habit.

Gross.

Toilet paper shouldn't be used for anything other than wiping after going to the loo.

No blowing your nose, using it as a napkin etc. Its toilet paper and the environment that it is in (the toilet presumably) is not conducive to using it for any other activity including cleaning your glasses (yuk).

Similarly if you flush then wash your hands.

AutumnLoverButNotYet · 26/10/2026 08:26

Yes, it would bother me on several different levels. It's an ineffective way to clean glasses. If he was going to use toilet paper, a couple of sheets would do you don't need the boxing glove wrap for cleaning glasses so it's definitely a waste.

Yes, he should have washed his hands properly after flushing the toilet, but I can see why he didn't even think about it.

But given he's a long ago X it seems really weird to start a thread about it. Are you OK?

Yes, I'm perfectly fine, thank you. It crossed my mind (not sure why) and I was curious to see where I was on the U spectrum, especially as I am both a bit waste- and germphobic.

Yes, he was generally incompetent at most things; clumsy and with little common sense. He had a first-class degree and a DPhil from Oxford, but needed explicit instructions when I asked him to bring me a plastic envelope to put a document in. Couldn't drive a car or ride a bike. Also had very little drive generally, and proposed to me in a supermarket.

Lovely guy, but I need someone to be a bit more capable to be attracted to them.

Bit of a rich question coming from someone who started a thread about a long-ago ex's toilet paper glasses cleaning assumed regular habit.

In that case doesn't it bother you that when someone has a shit those same hands will touch the tap when they go to wash them? Does everyone in your house wash the tap after use?

The point of my question was if you were genuinely concerned about the amount of germs on a flush mechanism it would be something you wiped clean regularly - and definitely after YOU had touched it after having a poo.

You can't say it's something so germ ridden that just someone touching it gives you the ick if you don't actually do anything to mitigate the issue.

It may well be random/irrelevant/historical/
inconsequential, but I didn't make it up. Which was my point.
