Save the date for a milestone birthday party.

Just been sent a WhatsApp message to save 2 dates in December as possible dates for an 18th birthday party.

Is this usual? Seems very late to be organising a milestone birthday and especially in December.

Who cares whether it’s a bit late or not . It is what it is and you have bugger all idea clearly about what’s going on

missmollygreen · 25/10/2026 19:42

Seems fine to me. Unless it is for xmas eve/day/boxing day?

GintyMcGinty · 25/10/2026 19:42

What’s the problem?

Yes. Either Boxing Day or the 27th.

I think its a reasonable time to send an invite tbh especially as people have a lot going on in December, it must be quite hard to get a birthday party organised in that month.

behindtheanimalhouse · 25/10/2026 19:45

It's a bit much to ask you to save both dates, most people see family over this time and I think a lot of people would have plans for Boxing Day and 27th already.

Eh?

MellowSubmarine · 25/10/2026 19:47

I think it’s quite cheeky to say “please keep both Boxing Day and the 27th free until we let you know the date”. They must know people need some certainty around dates at that time of year!

Yeah that was my thinking. We have plans Boxing Day. DC and DGC coming and staying over.
Even if it's the 27th, I will be exhausted but feel very obliged to go.

Are you the invitee? Weird response

Arlanymor · 25/10/2026 20:01

Are they asking you to save both or canvassing which you can/can't do. It's two months' notice so I guess they are thinking that by doing it now people will be firming up their Christmas arrangements. If they're asking you to keep both dates free that's a bit off given the time of year - unless they are going to follow up with a firm date in very short order.

Whose party is it? Inviting a load of much older people to an 18th isn’t typical. Whatever happened to getting a load of kids to go to the pub for an 18th?

I agree, my ds are 18 and 21 and wouldn't have been seen dead in a pub for their 18ths.

Its a very close friends son.

Yes both dates.
I was organising Christmas dates in August as I've such a big family and so few days off this year.

You can just decline if it doesn’t work for you. Someone sending a save the date is not a summons. Just say you can’t make it.

Offtoday · 26/10/2026 08:09

You are obviously very very close to the family @SillyG . I very much doubt they have sent out the save the dates to everyone they are intending to invite. Just family and like family

Hayley1256 · 26/10/2026 08:11

Its a bit short notice for those dates. I would just respond with the one you can do

Nice for them. You're not going anyway so I don't know what you're complaining about.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 26/10/2026 08:21

For 26/27 Dec yes unreasonable

AddledPeacock · 26/10/2026 08:30

Unreasonable for 26/27 and why can’t they just specify which one.

They aren't asking dates people can attend but asking us to save both dates.
Shes waiting on confirmation from the venue of dates.

If it doesn't work for you, then don't go.

It does seem a bit cheeky to expect you to keep two dates. Surely this close, you'd just issue the invite
