How long til privately run neighbourhood police become the norm?

hotmumshit · 24/10/2026 15:16

They already exist in some places and use private prosecutions to uphold their values

I personally think its morally wrong, but since when does that matter

I think that home security firms will start providing access to them as part of their services

Welcome to hell

It’s already the norm in affluent areas such as parts of the Home Counties, parts of London and The Wirral etc. Rich people will buy security services. The norm for ordinary people very unlikely.

Wow the Wirral ? Where on the Wirral ?
Yes very common around Holland park areas of London

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 24/10/2026 21:12

I hope it's never. Those 'enforcement officer' type people are vile. Motivated by money and targets, intimidating, picking on the people they see as least likely to argue.

Saw them fine an old lady once for dropping her tissue on a windy day. Bastards.

Netcurtainnelly · 24/10/2026 21:38

Agree. There just aren't enough police to be everywhere.
People that keep breaking into cars and trying car for handles at night are always on our local Facebook pages
Arseholes on drugs knocking around making a nuisance of themselves.
If they catch one another starts up.
People say where are the police? They can't be down every road.
Would people be prepared to pay someone to police their road to protect their cars and stop people coming into their property to check doors too?

EmeraldRoulette · 24/10/2026 21:47

hotmumshit · 24/10/2026 20:44

I don't think they do go through the cps you know

But what is the alternative?

If you want to take somebody to court and have them be punished and/or go to prison, that is what you have to do.

@Netcurtainnelly ” Would people be prepared to pay someone to police their road to protect their cars and stop people coming into their property to check doors too?”

isn’t this what very rich people are doing?

But these aren't just your everyday people taking their anti social neighbours to court - that would be so different

They're private police firms with the power to get people imprisoned without going through the public justice system, people who they simply feel deserve it

Who can regulate who they decide to prosecute and dont?

Thats, imo, abhorrent

No matter how much my neighbour and his pals needs locking up

Why is it morally wrong? It's just a paid service so you can live peacefully. I'd consider it since I found some scumbag trying to look into our garage.

Exactly. Just putting CCTV up and ring door bells dosent stop people especially at night.
What powers do they have by the way?

EmeraldRoulette · 24/10/2026 21:55

@hotmumshit “They're private police firms with the power to get people imprisoned without going through the public justice system, people who they simply feel deserve it”

but they aren’t. That’s my point. They have to go through the criminal justice system like everybody else. The main difference with a private prosecution is who’s paying for it.

But you still have to go through the Crown Prosecution Service.

Yes, just saying will it go that way for every road eventually.
Would people even take it turns to police their own roads ?

BitOutOfPractice · 24/10/2026 21:58

Here in Reform-controlled Essex we have private vigilante security patrols in three of our cities.

Apparently they were brought in “in response to community concerns about local immigration centres”.

Id like to know who has appointed them. Who has vetted them. What powers they have.

TBH it scares me to death.

PreparationPreventsPPP · 24/10/2026 21:58

I can't remember the last time I saw a police person walk down my road !
Id happily chip in for some protection

By definition, a private prosecution does not involve the CPS. Sometimes the CPS will take over a private prosecution, but this is by no means compulsory. For example most animal cruelty prosecutions are private prosecutions brought by the RSPCA. The (now notorious) prosecutions of postmasters under the Horizon scandal were private prosecutions brought by the Post Office.

The cps isnt involved, they go through magistrates or crown courts - they can get involved if they feel the need

They can still have someone imprisoned but have the financial means to take people to court who they see fit and can decide not to prosecute someone if they dont want to

I choose that over the non existent police force in my area.

I’m so sorry
I should have said you can’t do it without HMCTS - the public court system.

So you can bring the case that far without them, but you do ultimately have to deal with a court.

@hotmumshit sorry for the muddle. We don’t have private courts going on though - if you see what I mean - you can’t just take someone to a secret private court and get them convicted for burgling you or whatever.

Well, obviously. I don’t think anyone was suggesting that people can be tried and convicted without going before a court!

I wasn’t quite sure what was being said to be honest. You wouldn’t be surprised to find it on here that people think there are separate private courts for private prosecutions.

It doesn’t worry me that people can bring private prosecutions to a court.

It does worry me that people feel the need to hire private security, for all kinds of reasons. I accept that the reasons are valid. But in general, I don’t want to turn into… some other countries, and I don’t think we’ve got that far to fall.

hotmumshit · 24/10/2026 22:09

I dont agree with private prosecutions is all

I understand how we got here. I understand how we will get to have private police firms running towns

Its alright for the wealthy, who will hire professionals

But for the rest of us, unemployed big terry with a grudge against 'that muslamic lot' and 'feminazis' being able to set up his own police firm, use citizens arrests and privately prosecute vulnerable people, is a terrifying prospect

When I was a tennage, I'd not have believed how many people would use private GPs and healthcare. Just saw an ad for private GPs, boasting you got to see the same doctor each time, and could actually ring up, get the phone answered, and be able to book an appointment within a week. This century, on the NHS, you got to see the same GP each time, could usually get in the same day, and she did home visits on occasion! So now, people are paying for a service worse than we got free in the noughties!
So yes, I think a lot more people will but stuff. Last time I was at AE, and told I'd need a scan and it would be a while, they said I could go private. In the 00s, that wouldn't be believable,

UnpopularOpinionsIWouldUsuallyKeepToMyself · 24/10/2026 22:16

The local council here has employed private security firm Akon, for the last two summers running, to provide additional services for seaside towns experiencing increased levels of anti social behaviour. Five days a week over a peak period, with the other two days being covered by police with extra patrols. The general consensus seems pretty positive tbh. They provided intelligence and passed it to police who then acted on it. This year certainly didn’t se to be anywhere near as problematic as previous years (it’s generally the summer period that it’s at its height), so I hope they do it again next year. However, the problem seems to have been pushed down the coast to other coastal towns as a result, some of which saw appalling issues this summer.

hotmumshit · 24/10/2026 22:17

I'm beginning to feel that the only solution to the problems in society, health and crime, is to move and make more money, honestly
