Do you still use actual cash to pay for things? Ive just realised I've not used notes & coins for months

Its suddenly struck me that I've completely stopped using actual money in every day life. If I go out anywhere I use my phone/watch to pay so no longer bother carrying my purse most days. If my teen dc ask for money I just do a bank transfer rather than handing them cash. Ive just booked a friend group Christmas dinner and everyone transferred their deposit to my bank account. I think the last time I used actual money was when I was on holiday, but even then things like taxis were via an app, flights and hotel booking were paid online, and bigger restaurant bills I paid via card.

I think what's made me realise this is that the news is full of govt warnings to have some actual cash in case of a cyber attack. And I checked my purse and found I had £100 cash in it (I went camping in June, so took went to a cashpoint to get actual money in case i needed it. Turns out I didnt spend any of the actual cash money and have used my card to pay for everything since then).

Surely I'm not the only one who has gone cash free? Ive enabled voting

YABU - I still use cash for most things.
YANBU - I never/hardly ever use cash

Occasional takeaway , daughter’s ice skating lessons and her gcse tuition last year. My husband likes to have some cash I never have any on me apart from when daughters grandad gives her cash and she asks me to convert to money in her account.

im not sure how much it would help having loads though as are not the tills etc needing power /wifi?

The wi-fi went down in our big sainsburys a few weeks ago. The tills could take cash but cards weren't working.

I make a point of withdrawing money and using cash.

Mainly for small business that I try to use as much as possible. They get 100% of the value then, whereas businesses are charged for every transaction.

Also again attacks and outerages mean I’m ok, look at Revolut last week.

Most “cash only” small businesses are trying to evade tax (or sometimes CMS payments). I refuse to use anyone cash-only for this reason.

Username193755 · 23/10/2026 13:07

I'm card/electronic only but I do have some cash for emergency situations I have the same £200 I have had since New years in my purse it's worthwhile to have just in case but I don't even carry it with me usually. Only place I go to that is cash only is my local shopping centre carpark but even that I avoid.

Davros · 23/10/2026 13:17

Neither of your options works for me. I use cash sometimes. Not never and not mostly

ToadRage · 23/10/2026 13:22

I take my purse everywhere cos my card is in it but rarely have cash. If I know I need cash for something we will have to plan a stop at an atm. We had an issue recently when we went to a rugby game and the entry was cash only. Mu husband almost threw a fit luckily a more tech savvy staff member of staff was able to show him how to buy tickets online.

Seziah · 23/10/2026 13:26

My family owns a small shop and we get charged for paying cash in now. We’re also only allowed to pay in a certain amount of cash per day which is really annoying. I’m sure other banks are different, but for some small businesses it doesn’t matter that much whether you use cash or card anymore. But there is more incentive now to take cash and not put it in the bank/pay tax on it

Teado · 23/10/2026 13:30

TBH cash-only businesses will never not be suspicious. 😆 Whether it’s tax evasion or CMS fraud.

HappyViewer · 23/10/2026 13:32

I only use cash for tips and sometimes when I’m abroad.

Berlinlover · 23/10/2026 13:33

I use cash every day.

Truinio · 23/10/2026 13:33

I did do until last year but our last local holdouts: the fish and chip shop, the greengrocers, and a couple of market stalls, all now accept card. Our last bank shut down earlier this year and we have only one cashpoint for a population of 11,000 (more if you include surrounding villages).

Because of the difficulty of banking cash, especially at the weekend and at night, more and more businesses are refusing it altogether. Case in point is the fish and chip shop which went from cash only to card only.

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 23/10/2026 13:35

I’ve used it all week which felt strange. I was in a well known chain restaurant and the server refused a guy ahead of me to use cash said card only- I was gobsmacked

InveterateWineDrinker · 23/10/2026 13:41

Earlier this year I sold a Krugerrand to a legitimate dealer... who insisted that it was easier for them to pay me in cash. All in £10 notes too. I felt like the bloody Michelin man walking back to the car.

I bank with an online bank and paying it in is easier said than done, and it's a right nuisance trying to spend it.

We use alot of cash but we buy and sell alot of second hand stuff and deal with alot of self employed people (I have no issue helping John the plumber avoid paying tax so he can afford to put food on the table when huge companies are avoiding paying millions), go to car boots, we live quite rurally where people raise chickens and have little farm shops or stalls outside their house, takeaways are cash only.

Love this. Good on you

EmeraldShamrock000 · 23/10/2026 14:21

I do sometimes. We are over reliant on technology. The cash I use comes from the hole in wall anyway. I take out what I expect to spend in the week in the shop. I take out about 80 a week. All big purchases food shop etc is with a card.

ilovepixie · 23/10/2026 14:23

The window cleaner, some small shops or cafes and taxi drivers only take cash here. I have £10 on the fridge for the window cleaner, and get cash out if needed but that’s quite rare.

Peskelleen · 23/10/2026 14:34

I rarely use cash to pay for things but I like to use it to move money around between bank accounts for various reasons. I always have some cash on my person and in the house as it's just spare money that wouldn't earn much interest and I haven't got around to paying it into the bank, plus I keep some in my bag as I don't need it, and it doesn't add much weight or bulk so it's always useful to have just in case, I just forget it's there really.

GintyMcGinty · 23/10/2026 14:36

Almost never and tends to only be at charity events.

ToadRage · 23/10/2026 14:37

In an effort to save for Christmas my husband has started putting cash in a pot at the back of the kitchen cupboard.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 23/10/2026 12:26

You're missing the point that the cash does not get paid into a business account, it goes into a purse or wallet for general spending.

Those businesses are probably paying staff and suppliers electronically though so they probably do have to put cash in the bank for wages and suppliers etc

JHound · 23/10/2026 14:41

Yep. Always. Usually when I get my hair done or nails.
In general I always have cash on me and always need to have cash which is stupid I know but stems from childhood!

WhoWhereWhatWhy · 23/10/2026 14:41

I use cash all the time. Gardener wants to be paid in cash weekly, same with hairdresser and babysitter. Also tip using cash at local cafe and at some restaurants. I always have coins for charity tins.

LlynTegid · 23/10/2026 14:41

Market stalls as a small amount, charity collections, a few other things. Probably under 5% of my spend.

InterestedDad37 · 23/10/2026 14:47

Local chippy is cash only (roughly once a month) and local pub prefers cash but will do card/phone (and then moan about it all bloody night).
Apart from that, almost exclusively phone payment.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 23/10/2026 14:56

Only ever use cash if I need to pay someone back, I have to go somewhere specific that's cash-only, or I have no card access for whatever reason. Don't use it otherwise.

Doppe · 23/10/2026 15:01

I HAD to pay cash for car parking recently, i am so glad i had enough coins loose in the car! First time i had been to this place and i was already incredibly nervous about the drive/finding my way there. I had researched the parking situation beforehand and downloaded the app I needed but would it work? Would it hell! I tried for half an hour and was in danger of it taking me up to the next hour price increase so i gave up, collected up all the coins in the car and rushed to find the coin machine. Of course there was a queue, and time was ticking away, it was all very stressful!
