Do you still use actual cash to pay for things? Ive just realised I've not used notes & coins for months

Its suddenly struck me that I've completely stopped using actual money in every day life. If I go out anywhere I use my phone/watch to pay so no longer bother carrying my purse most days. If my teen dc ask for money I just do a bank transfer rather than handing them cash. Ive just booked a friend group Christmas dinner and everyone transferred their deposit to my bank account. I think the last time I used actual money was when I was on holiday, but even then things like taxis were via an app, flights and hotel booking were paid online, and bigger restaurant bills I paid via card.

I think what's made me realise this is that the news is full of govt warnings to have some actual cash in case of a cyber attack. And I checked my purse and found I had £100 cash in it (I went camping in June, so took went to a cashpoint to get actual money in case i needed it. Turns out I didnt spend any of the actual cash money and have used my card to pay for everything since then).

Surely I'm not the only one who has gone cash free? Ive enabled voting

YABU - I still use cash for most things.
YANBU - I never/hardly ever use cash

I was fully card / Apple Pay only for a longtime but recently noticed here in US a charge 3.5-4% now being charged to use card it’s very annoying. Usually you don’t know until you arrive at the restaurant it’s getting expensive.

They're not allowed to do that in UK.

Mischance · 23/10/2026 11:46

I pay cleaner in cash. Otherwise it's bank transfers.

Ladyoftheflowers26 · 23/10/2026 11:47

I don’t use cash often, i use apple pay a lot but with all these cyber attacks on various websites and goverment warnings etc recently.

I’m thinking i should always have some cash at home. It’s only a matter of time that some important systems go down for a length of time. Banking, shop till systems etc.

Verv · 23/10/2026 11:47

Very rarely, hate carrying cash.
Rarely take card holder out either these days as Apple pay is just so convenient.

Goodgriefisthatrue · 23/10/2026 11:48

We use cash all the time easier for us to track spending. I use transfers for sending the savings accounts etc and for the food shop.

FillerTrackOnTheAlbumOfLife · 23/10/2026 11:50

I'm about 50/50.

Cash for: charity shops, market stalls, anywhere like a 'pop up' shop that I wouldn't trust with my card details, food and drink 'on the go' (to deter me from wasting too much money on things like coffee).
Card for: supermarket shop and other established, trusted retailers, travel, holidays, car expenses.

Isobel201 · 23/10/2026 11:50

I'm mostly cash free, I bank transfer money for my hair appointments, and pay by card for everything else on apple pay. I have about £30 cash atm but considering I've just booked my hair colour for december, will need more than that to pay my hair dresser so will probably just bank transfer the amount as its £75

The only people I pay cash to are my window cleaner and my dog groomer; who are both self-employed.

And dodging tax. Which you are aiding.

Clydebuilt · 23/10/2026 11:51

I use both…all the shops where I am accept cash.

Sherararara · 23/10/2026 11:52

Veraandacupoftea · 23/10/2026 11:18

Very rarely.

my milk man wants payment in cash , and tbh it’s a pain in the bum , as someone has to get it out from the cash machine once a month

I have tried but he’s having none of the bank transfer.

apart from that just about never .

Another tax dodger?

Oioiqueen · 23/10/2026 11:53

I only use cash for school tuck shop things and the tooth fairy. When I use independent small shops I tend to ask if they prefer cash or card but generally I just use my phone if they aren't fussed.

morgan56 · 23/10/2026 11:56

I use cash quite a lot. Lot of takeaways, restaurants, hairdressers, nails all cash only. Also we like car boots/charity shops which all prefer cash.

Nat6999 · 23/10/2026 11:57

In the last 3 months I've used cash to pay the removal man who moved my belongings from my mum's to my home, paid for the mattress for my bed, paid for my blinds for my flat, paid the decorator & the plumber. I'm housebound & haven't used my card in a machine in years, I can't even remember my pin code, if I need cash I do a transfer to ds account & he draws me the cash out. I've got £300 in my purse at the moment.

redfishcat · 23/10/2026 11:59

I mainly use cards but I do use cash quite often, and I keep enough for a months worth of food and petrol in case of cyber attacks or storm damage.
I probably need to add another £100 to cover rent price hikes

Spidey66 · 23/10/2026 11:59

Rarely.... occasionally to buy one item for less than about £2.

I was at a record fair recently. One of the stalls only accepted cash and I had to run out to the cash machine.

Even Big Issue sellers and ice cream men use cards now.

I often go around with little or no cash. Sometimes if I'm passing a homeless person I feel bad I can't give them cash, but I say to them I can get them something from Greggs or the supermarket if they want.

My dcs schools (secondary) are all online cash payments. Their food account, school trips, £1 for own clothes day, etc are all just electronic now.

The only annoying thing is that they are at different schools which use different systems so remembering whether to log in to wisepay or arbor sometimes trips me up. But its still so much easier than having to scrabble round the house looking for spare pound coins to celebrate maths day or whatever.

Yes sorry I should have clarified the disco ticket was an online payment as are school trips, dinner money etc.

The coins were for the tuck shop at the disco, 20p for freddo, 40p a bag of choc buttons etc.

There are 3 discos a year and I think it’s really the only time I find myself needing cash.

Gamerlady · 23/10/2026 12:03

Always use cash , can see what I'm spending. With card its so easily to tap away and overspend.

Ulrikakakakaka · 23/10/2026 12:04

I still use it. I don't want to see cash use withdrawn completely and everything moved to digital. The financial institutions make a lot of money from businesses who have to pay a charge every time they accept a digital payment.
So for small independant businesses I use cash so that they get to keep all of the money and it helps to keep their bank charges down.
Losing cash altogether would really affect things like school fetes/fundraisers etc so I'm all for keeping cash

Lifejigsaw · 23/10/2026 12:05

I would estimate I haven't used cash in 10 years. With the exception of the 2penny machines in the arcade at the beach!

Growlybear83 · 23/10/2026 12:05

I still use cash for lots of small purchases, and there are several local takeaways near me who will only take cash.

one of my best friends only ever pays with cash, including her supermarket shop, and has never had a credit card.

quackquack1514 · 23/10/2026 12:06

Yes because i don't want a world without it. It's harder though

Growlybear83 · 23/10/2026 12:06

I also occasionally use cheques as well.

But you run the risk of not having enough if a price has unexpectedly changed. So you’d have to use card anyway.

I don’t understand the idea that cash is easier to keep track of. Surely to keep track of cash you have to constantly keep receipts and manually add up your spending. With card it’s automatically itemised and you can check it online easily.

Theworldismybuffet · 23/10/2026 12:08

Yabu. It helps me budget. I don't use it in small shops or cafes though as they probably don't want cash on the premises or the faff of cashing up.

I pay for my big shop and petrol with cash.

WhatHappenedToYourFurnitureCuz · 23/10/2026 12:09

I've used cash exactly six times in four years. Four times were at a takeaway which only accepts cash, and I stopped because it made me uncomfortable.
