To hate being "policed" by family

AIBU to dislike online policing by family members?
I was an early adopter of Faceache in 2007, but left a couple of years later as it did nothing for me and family and friends have my phone, mobile and email.
I rejoined just before Covid because there was supposed to be a school reunion, which obviously did not happen.
I am still registered, but go there rarely, mostly to check on birthdays.
However, every time I have been on Faceache - twice in the last 6 months - a family member screenshots my message and tells me it was inappropriate.
Maybe it was, but maybe the person I sent the message to could tell me themself?

OP posts:

What are you posting that they deem inappropriate?

"Happy birthday" apparently 😳

I think the OP may have chickened out of telling us what she really posted.

LondonLass2026 · 23/10/2026 10:48

Sorry, this post is really muddled.

And stop calling it Faceache! So annoying. I don't have it myself, but it is what you make of it. No one forces you to use it. Which brings me on to - what sort of things are you saying, for so many people to have a word with you?

TeenLifeMum · 23/10/2026 10:51

Are you writing “Happy birthday Enid - hope the thrush cleared up in time for you to celebrate and get a good pain-free shag.”?

Merryoldgoat · 23/10/2026 10:53

Stop being disingenuous. Either give the full context or don’t post. No one is telling you a ‘happy birthday’ on someone’s wall is eliciting this kind of reaction.

Somethingsquishy · 23/10/2026 10:54

YABU for calling it Faceache.

You're either posting more than just "happy birthday" or you're posting a HB message to someone you shouldn't be. And we'll probably never know the real issue.

OneNavyMerc · 23/10/2026 10:22

All I post these days is Happy Birthday.
Blocking is a good answer, if I unfriended all hell would break lose.
I will just block those family members.

Edited

So if you only post happy birthday what has been screen shotted as inappropriate?

Also “early adopter” - everyone joined in 2007 didn’t they?

KidsDoBetter · 23/10/2026 11:07

The "faceache" thing is ... cringe. What does that even mean ffs.

ElBandito · 23/10/2026 11:08

What the hell are you posting?

"Happy Birthday! You fucking wanker, I hope you die before the next one"?

DeeNiall · 23/10/2026 11:09

NoteyMcNoteface · 23/10/2026 10:23

How can wishing someone happy birthday be inappropriate? I don’t think we’re getting the full story here.

Happy 70th birthday Dad (Joseph Bloggs) gives away a lot of information.
Dad's DoB and name, your maiden name for a start.

I call it Faceache too. Not used it for decades.

RelicMaster · 23/10/2026 11:15

NotSmallButFunSize · 23/10/2026 10:39

Joking how?

As in no-one can take such a ridiculous play on words as offensive … how do you cope in life with anything. It’s a funny wordplay on Facebook, that it all. 🤷‍♀️

Thepeopleversuswork · 23/10/2026 11:20

There must be a huge dripfeed coming. Clearly no one would think it inappropriate to wish a friend happy birthday.

Why don't you tell us the context?

Bumcake · 23/10/2026 11:25

So you publicly post private messages, and each time a family member tellls you off? Maybe they’re just trying to alert you to the messenger facility.

Zov · 23/10/2026 11:30

RelicMaster · 23/10/2026 10:25

Are you joking?? 😂

This is the impression I get from the OP too. That people who use Facebook are somehow inferior/beneath her. Like she's looking down her nose at them a bit.

@OneNavyMerc Just deactivate your account. It's not that difficult.

People are able to change their privacy settings. Just make it so that no-one can see anything unless they are on your 'friends' list.

Why don't you just say what actually happened instead of posting this silly cat-and-mouse nonsense?

I don’t understand. You posted Happy Birthday to someone and they or another person screenshot it and told you it was inappropriate?

Or something you wrote before? What was that?

Shmee1988 · 23/10/2026 11:33

There is definitely 90% of this story missing.

My friend and I always did wordplay on Facebook, including naughty ones. It was just a bit of fun. MN always throws shade on some incredible pearl clutching stuff that cracks me up 🤣

I wonder if it's this plus OP or her family member not understanding the privacy settings.

YABU to call it Faceache like you are somehow superior to those who like and use it

Also Thick Tok and You Pube.

watchingthishtread · 23/10/2026 11:47

If it's not the same person telling you this each time then chances are that your posts are inappropriate.

Screen shotting the post and contacting you directly is much more discreet than responding as a Facebook comment so it doesn't sound like they are trying to be nasty or embarrass you.

Totaldramallama · 23/10/2026 12:01

This thread is strange because the backstory about how you use Facebook is completely irrelevant but you miss out the key details of what was inappropriate and why your family member was unhappy
