Why do some people get wound up if others test for covid?

What is it about testing for covid specifically that seems to wind people up?
AIBU to find it really odd? People don’t seem to have the same reaction to any other test.

YABU - it is not odd to be wound up because another person does a covid test

YANBU - it is odd that some people get wound up because another person does a covid test

Of course you can still test. Available at most pharmacies. You must know that surely ?

I’ve just had Covid and it knocked me on my arse for a couple of weeks and I’m still suffering another week later. Worse than any flu I had and definitely not just a cold. It circulated around our office extremely quickly and most people only had mild symptoms but they did pass it around.

I test as I’ve recently had cancer treatment and we have 2 other people in my office who are immunocompromised so it’s useful for us to know if we’ve caught it or at risk of catching it. We’re not OTT but If any staff knows they have Covid we ask them to wfh. Same as if they had norovirus or flu.

Another colleague who is not vulnerable but was having surgery this week worked from home too as they would not operate with Covid.

My manager who was burying her dad in the midst of it last week took extra precautions once she knew Covid was circulating as she didn’t want to risk being too sick to attend her own father’s funeral. She would have done the same with norovirus/ flu.

My partner tests as he works abroad frequently and he has to do a health check declaration thing for the country he’s back and forth to and it’s a country in the Middle East where they take these things very seriously.

It's not easy to get a test, people in my office tried to and everywhere was out of stock.

XenaSharples · 23/10/2026 06:17

Some people think it's all a big conspiracy, so anyone testing for it is acknowledging that it exists.

Shatenoeuf · 23/10/2026 06:18

My experience is a lot of testers want to stay off work, have something that is only mild cold symptoms and know that if its tested as covid they can get away with a week off work. In reality for all but the elderly/unvaccinated, covid is no longer the threat it was.

We're just much more careful if it's covid or flu as risk of more serious consequences, especially as DH and I both have some risk factors. If we have a bad cold we stay home/wash our hands a lot/etc. But covid or flu we isolate from everyone else in the family to the extent possible and stay that way until unlikely to be infectious even if we're feeling okay.

Same. I have covid at the moment and have isolated myself from family in the home. I wouldn't do that for a normal cold, I would just take extra hygiene precautions.

I know a lot of people woth long covid and I developed some heart problems after having covid in 2020 so I treat it much more seriously than a normal cold virus. I also have elderly parents and would take more precautions against them possibly getting it from me than I would a normal cold.

I'm currently struggling to swallow my own saliva, my throat is so painful like swallowing razor blades, and with a constant cough the pain is unbearable. Add a pounding head into that and muscle/joint pain amd stomach ache. Ive had about 2 hours sleep tonight. Never felt like that with a normal cold virus.

Greenmouldycheese · 23/10/2026 06:25

I had no idea you could still test for this until a few weeks ago. I dont get why theres a need for it anymore. If you're unwell, then you just rest as you would if you had flu and try not to spread it.

Vintique · 23/10/2026 06:34

I have no issue with people testing and have done so (vulnerable colleagues, older relatives). But I only test once and then I do worry about false negatives - during the pandemic restrictions, before the vaccine, I remember sometimes it would take days of negatives before a positive would appear. Maybe the tests are better now though?

You sound like one of the people who get annoyed because other people test. It’s perfectly sensible to test for Covid because you then know what to expect. If I have a cold I know that I’m no longer infectious by the time I’ve got symptoms. If I’d got Covid I would stay indoors for a week.

Why on earth would you think you stop being infectious with a cold once symptoms start? You absolutely are still infectious when you are coughing and spluttering. Yes you likely aren’t when you end up with lingering coughs etc. But am active symptomatic cold in the early days? You absolutely are contagious.

Bjorkdidit · 23/10/2026 06:38

I'm just thinking 'why are people talking about covid again'? It's like some are willing lockdown to come back.

BogRollBOGOF · 23/10/2026 06:39

I can see the point if it changes the medical treatment (e.g. specific anti-virals for people with other health conditions)

For me and a large proportion of people, if I'm ill enough to be off work I'll be in bed until my immune system deals with it and there's little point in testing the kind of lurgy it is. I'd get short shrift at work if I felt a bit sniffly and refused to come in because of a test when I was otherwise functional, not least because absence is probably high with people too ill to work and I'm very much needed.

AbsoluteHoot · 23/10/2026 06:40

I only ever hear of people still testing on here. I think some like the drama and attention.

For the vast majority of people, testing makes no sense.

I’m careful with any infection, I don’t need it labelled as cold, flu or Covid.

Yellowbelliedsapsuckeristaken · 23/10/2026 06:44

Because people are idiots.
I cant even count how many idiots I have seen posting on videos on SM from Japan or China, where people have been wearing face masks for years and years and it's very common, to comment "BUT WHY THE FACE MASKS, THIS IS SO STUPID". Many actually believe face masks was some sort of Covid invention and do not bother looking any further.
People are stupid, angry and get triggered by anything, but things like covid, vaccines, and gender equality seem to be bringing out the most crazy ones out there.

Not annoyed, but frustrated at people’s lack of common sense TBH.

Things like I’m no longer contagious when cold symptoms start!

Spend your money on Covid tests, if you like.

I’m glad they’re no longer free.

WhatNoRaisins · 23/10/2026 06:47

I don't care what others do but I don't see the point. Something like that vaginal pH self test makes more sense as you buy different remedies for thrush Vs BV, upper respiratory illness you just use the same stuff.

speakball · 23/10/2026 06:50

There’s a lot of people who didnt believe covid was real and it probably irritates the fricken hell out of them (possibly embarrassment) that the thing that they believed was all made up is just still here.

TeaCupTinsel · 23/10/2026 06:54

We still test (as a family) because I'm immunosuppressed and have to go for treatment/ have treatment if I catch covid or various other illnesses.

The 'covid is only a cold' people drive me up the wall... it's not a cold, it's an inflammatory virus which absolutely decimated my immune system and made me seriously unwell. That virus is the reason I am now immunosuppressed and have a life-limiting condition.

Unless you've had your life changed by it or are immunosuppressed/have an immunosuppressed family member you just wouldn't understand.

People get really odd and offended about testing/mask wearing etc, despite not always using their brains to consider why someone might have to do so.

RampantIvy · 23/10/2026 06:55

There is some utter codswallop on this thread.

DH got covid while on a cardiac ward waiting for open heart surgery last year.

The hospital took it very seriously and isolated him in a single room.

Covid is a big deal for the vulnerable.

Mumofyellows · 23/10/2026 06:58

In my previous job I would test if I had symptoms as I worked with children who were medically very vulnerable. I am asthmatic and last time I have Covid was very unwell with pneumonia. I’d also rather know in light of this so I am prepared.

WhichCow · 23/10/2026 06:59

I only get annoyed with colleagues who insist on testing (we don't have to) and when they positive, they continue coming into the office anyway and spluttering all over everyone.

I’m careful with any infection, I don’t need it labelled as cold, flu or Covid.

I'm a lot more careful with something that is more likely to require hospitalization. It's utterly facile to treat all risk the same.

Chickpeacurrywithrice · 23/10/2026 03:20

Can you still test? Just why would you? Is Covid worse than having flu? Not “wound up” just intrigued as to why saying “I’ve got Covid” is any more a reason to be unwell than I’ve “got flu”

What do you mean by being “wound up”.

My husband is on immunosuppressant drugs and needs to know if he has Covid so that he can access antiviral medication.

out of interest, how many times do you test, before you are satisfied it’s not Covid? Is once enough?

It depends on circumstances and symptoms.

What was her answer?

I think her husband is one of those men that always makes a massive song and dance about having a cold and bought the tests to justify his malingering in bed for days on end expecting sympathy while his DW does all the childcare, housework and working FT. So I think there was a box of tests in the house and she just took one to prove to him that she was also ill. Luckily I am single so dont need to evidence any claims of being under the weather.
