To bring proper meals into the office?

I’m on a bit of a health kick. Usually I bring in stews, casseroles etc.

My meal prep went wrong this week and I’m planning on taking a mini roast into the office tomorrow. There’s a few of us in the office who are trying to eat healthy and we were discussing lunches, I said this and a colleague went “urgh, great. The smell of gravy again”.

AIBU to do this? Everyone in the office tends to bring hot meals, but they’re usually ready meals. I figured a homemade meal would be fine, but now I feel a little self conscious.

I thought it's fish and eggs that's socially frowned upon in microwave office meals? Gravy, curry, lasagne etc. if those are what you lot eat seem fairly reasonable.

Other people's mic means are never going to smell delicious when they are being cooked one after another.

Is there any way to improve ventilation in the office kitchen?

The bisto snobs are peak mumsnet, absolutely hilarious.

The broccoli would annoy me more than the gravy OP, if you're heating it up in the microwave then reheated broccoli really does smell like farts. I wouldn't say anything though, I'd just hold my nose and grumble.

Offices should either allow hot food to be eaten within the office space, or not. Being funny about what the hot food is, e.g. gravy but not curry, or fish but not melted cheese is just madness.

If people don't like the smells they should push management to provide a proper eating space away from desks (and ban hot food at desks) instead of whining at people who are just trying to have their lunch.

You don't need to mention that she was vegan here. That's akin to saying 'a Muslim colleague brought in a curry'.

Not all vegans eat cabbage soup.

Plenty of non-vegans eat cabbage soup.
The soup did not smell worse because she was vegan.

I could have omitted the word 'vegan', yes, but I had no intention of being disrespectful to vegans. She was vegan. There are parts of the world where cabbage soup is traditional and there was a fad for a cabbage soup slimming diet decades ago. If either of those had been relevant I might have mentioned that too. It's not a common thing to eat in the UK, after all.

Thank you for replying. I just imagined if you replaced that word with any other philosophical belief or religion you'd have people jumping on you like they do 'what has her being X got to do with it?!'

You're right that it isn't a common food. For anyone. Including vegans.

Whatever anyone has said/suggested you have continued with your argument towards having your roast dinner with gravy. No-one here will change your mind, so best to move on from this. Enjoy your roast at work, no point in persisting here, is there?

It will be the reheated 'loads of veg' that smells rank, not the gravy

I used to have a colleague who was in office once or twice a week, he used to bring cockles in for his lunch. I'd take the smell of gravy over that any day. Yanbu, they'll live.

Someone in our office used to get cockles. Our local area is famous for them. Delicious

I think people usually object to curry, fish or eggs but go for it otherwise. Sounds lovely. Who doesn’t like the smell of gravy FFS!

100% this! The double standards are the problem.

Millennials possibly as they seem to enjoy being "triggered" by anything.

I can't imagine anyone else giving a shit.

A colleague used to make goat curry .She'd leave the bones in ' for extra flavour' but then chew the meat off them and stack them up on a napkin on her desk. The smell, the pile of bones. Nasty.

AngelinaFibres
I wouldn't like that. The pile of bones on the desk. Yuk!!
