To bring proper meals into the office?

I’m on a bit of a health kick. Usually I bring in stews, casseroles etc.

My meal prep went wrong this week and I’m planning on taking a mini roast into the office tomorrow. There’s a few of us in the office who are trying to eat healthy and we were discussing lunches, I said this and a colleague went “urgh, great. The smell of gravy again”.

AIBU to do this? Everyone in the office tends to bring hot meals, but they’re usually ready meals. I figured a homemade meal would be fine, but now I feel a little self conscious.

Ignore her OP.

Some people are only happy when they're moaning.

I'm not overstruck on the smell of coffee, but I'm hardly going to moan about people drinking it in the staffroom.

Lozlegs · 21/10/2026 20:05

Everyone where I work brings in left over main meals from rhe night before to reheat, often with gravy! Fish is a no no in office microwaves as it lingers but keep doing what your doing!

There’s general chat, because some people do have strong smelling meals, but never really any issues.

So if they have strong smelling meals, then why so worried about your roast? You’ll be reheating it in the microwave…. It will barely smell.

Do you eat in the seating area or at desk?

We don’t have a seating area

I used to have a colleague who was in office once or twice a week, he used to bring cockles in for his lunch. I'd take the smell of gravy over that any day. Yanbu, they'll live.

Cockles shouldn’t smell - I’m surprised he wasn’t ill!

Lots of people in my office bring in leftover roast. I’m not a big fan of roast dinners, but the thought of a microwaved one is even more 🤮

LilyBunch25 · 21/10/2026 20:13

Pfft take absolutely no notice whatsoever. You're not steaming kippers fgs...!

lots of people in my office bring in homemade food/leftovers. it’s literally fine, most comments are things like “ooh that smells good, what have you got?!” - no rude or snotty comments.

I've read many times on here that it's the height of rudeness to comment on what our colleagues are having for their lunch 😄

GrannyOfDragons · 21/10/2026 20:15

Thank you. That sounds like a great choice for the office. I want a roast now! Well done on your amazing weight loss and for sticking at it.

So you all sit at your desks eating hot meals…. Goodness, must be quite a mix of smells!

Nitgel · 21/10/2026 20:16

Any food that smells in the office is awful. And it lingers

I can’t see the roasties faring well

I doubt the OP has roasties if she is on a health kick

This reminds me of one time I brought my broccoli and turnip soup in to work and had to listen to everyone who walked past my office saying “urgh what is that fart smell?” Never again!

I had a vegan colleague who brought cabbage soup in and heated it up in the microwave in the unventilated cupboard we'd been given as a 'kitchen'. Then she carried it back along the corridor to her office, going through two fire doors on the way. The cabbage smell got stuck between the two fire doors for hours and hours. Not pleasant!

Air fried potatoes 😋 they’re home grown so go really lovely inside, I chop them up and par boil them then air fry with some 1 cal spray (not counted because it’s like, 4 calories) and some flaky sea salt. I’ll take the gravy separately so it doesn’t go soggy overnight!

We have nowhere else to eat! The alternative would be heating it up and eating at a park bench outside. Not exactly nice in the middle of winter!

When I have worked at places where people did this any the comments would be along the lines of "Are you sure you want that? I will take it off your hands if you can't manage all of it!"

It would be envy not disgust!

Sounds lovely. Bring a portion for me, please?

OneHazelBird · 21/10/2026 20:43

Are you talking about weight loss/diets a lot in the staff room?

This can be really tedious and difficult for those who struggle with food/weight issues and so perhaps it’s more about that than the actual food smells (roast dinners are a normal thing that people tend to bring in).

Specialagentblond · 21/10/2026 20:44

I think a roast dinner is acceptable. Anything overly lingering stinky like fish is inconsiderate

mindutopia · 21/10/2026 20:45

Ready meals smell awful. What miserable git doesn’t like the smell of gravy? Someone sounds jealous to me. 🙄

ReadingSoManyThreads · 21/10/2026 20:46

YANBU to bring in homecooked meals, however, I can see why others wouldn't be happy with the smell, gravy does have quite a smell and as for bisto - boke 😷

They was the kind that you can get in a jar. They absolutely reeked. They smelled everytime he had them too.

It's not real gravy though, it's bisto gravy granules....not exactly a pleasant smell.

This woman is also on a diet and also indulges in the conversations!
