I bought a ring for 2.5 K at the weekend. I only wore it straight after buying it to get a coffee and then put it back in the box until last night. I looked at it with my phone light to look at the sparkles and I noticed it’s got a scratch on the band. I’ve emailed the company and they are basically saying that I must’ve done the damage and they can only offer a polish and the 18 carat gold is known to be fragile. I am saying that I would like a refund under the consumer rights act 2015 as I was made unaware that it was this fragile, although I’m pretty certain the damage was not done by me they are offering to polish et cetera but I am saying that if it is causes damage by this light use then I do not want the ring as I was made unaware that I wouldn’t be able to wear it for three hours or less without damage see photos they are claiming it was not damaged when it left the shop but surely it is my word against theirs and I myself did not notice the damage until actually my light on it. Does anyone here know that consumer rights please and could advise me on where I actually stand as obviously I don’t always trust AI thank you.

Why a resize? You didn’t say anything here about it being loose or tight. How can they determine the correct sizing without measuring your finger? How long will the resizing take? If it needed resizing why did you take it home in the first place? It should have been sent off for that before you took it home.

Did you put your hand against any rough bricks or rocks?

She does mention it in her other thread, though agree not sure how they can measure without her there.

As they measured it against my old engagement ring while I was there and it was half a size smaller but we said to wear it for a bit at that size with it being a much bigger stone to see if it’s ok as it might spin if it was on the loose side. So I knew if it was to be made bigger that I just wanted it by half a size.

no I don’t make a habit of rubbing my hands against bricks or rocks.

@Seajaye no I don’t wear any other rings at all. I think it must’ve been there when I bought it personally and I just didn’t see it until I shone my phone light on it.

this is getting really weird now!

Your other engagement ring?!
It was measured against your other ring when you could have simply tried it on to see if it was the correct size?
You don't wear other rings but benchmarked this against a ring you wear and fits?!

WTF is actually going on OP?

FountainCourted · 23/10/2026 18:55

It’s mentioned on page 7 or 8 I think. Different username but obviously the same person.

It’s nothing controversial - just shows the rings before she bought it.

BirthdayStress · 23/10/2026 18:57

@Tortephant I’m sorry - I don’t understand why you’re confused. We have been engaged for 10 years - this will be my 3rd engagement ring - I’ve just upgraded them each time.

yes the jeweller handed me the ring - I said I think it’s too small, he said let me measure your current engagement ring, he did and said it’s actually only half a size smaller than your current ring. So we said I would wear it as that’s not much and the half a size smaller might stop it spinning with it being a bigger stone, and if not they did the first re size free.

im not sure what’s weird or confusing about this.

That just sounds weird now. Rather than being engaged for so long and just upgrading your ring every few years, why don’t you just get married?

BirthdayStress · 23/10/2026 19:01

@FountainCourted COVID, pregnancies, mental breakdowns - life. Not really relevant to the question I asked, nor anyone else’s business but our own why we haven’t got married yet.

Indeed, gold on its own is soft. However, 18 carat gold is 18 parts gold but the rest, 6 carats, is other metal which makes it harder and more wear resistant. Or a different colour. Adding copper makes gold a rose colour. Hence rose gold. The jeweller is having you on. Ask for a refund.

Edited

As someone who lived in Leeds and got engaged whilst there, the business has an exceptional intergenerational reputation. They aren't having anyone on and you shouldn't post that about a named business without evidence.

Anonmousse · 23/10/2026 19:20

Im slightly confused, if I was making someone a ring (which i have on multiple occassions) one of the first things to do is measure the finger they plan to wear it on, with a ring gauge. Guessing or using other rings as a gauge is usually the method if someone is buying it as a surprise or the recipient isnt actually there.
And if, when collected, it fitted but felt too tight thats like a half -1 hour fix, we used to suggest people went for lunch/a coffee and could resize for when they got back.

BirthdayStress · 23/10/2026 20:00

@Anonmousse it was already made, out of the shop window. It wasn’t made for me. I saw it in the shop window, measured the size which was only half a size smaller then my current engagement ring - and took it home.

Sorry edit as I re read your post. I know I guess it is odd they didn't offer to measure my finger. The gauge he had was more like a cone that a ring went on if that makes sense, I didn’t see one of those key things they use to measure. My partner took it back for it to be polished and resized while I wasn’t there, didn’t even think about having my finger re measured but yes I can see why you think that’s a bit odd.

So, to clarify, you didn't try on your engagement ring, you just bought it, then put it on after you left the shop and went for a coffee.

BirthdayStress · 23/10/2026 20:28

@Tortephant No. We walked in - said can we look at (the ring we bought) that’s in the window. He said of course. I didn’t want to force it on my finger in case I couldn’t get it off again, so I said I think this one is too small. He said does your current ring fit well? I said yes - I think it’s an N. He said I think this one is an N, let me measure yours against this one.

It turned out the one I owned was an N 1/2 and the one I liked was an N. I then pushed the one we were looking at past my knuckle and realised I could get it on and off.

he said if you want to take it home today and realise you do want that extra 1/2 up, come back and we will do a free resize, but he felt that it fitted quite well. But seen as it’s getting polished anyway I’ve decided I would like the extra 1/2 size up.

BirthdayStress · 23/10/2026 20:30

Then he said would you like to wear this one now and put your old one in the box, I said yes. Went for a coffee and went home. It then went back in the box - I took my old one of of the box and back on my usual trinket dish, as it was a Sunday evening and I had work where I’m not allowed rings.

If it's that bad did you not see it when you picked it up? Was it custom made, if so your rights are less.

I wouldn't have bought a ring that expensive without examining it carefully. I had my old engagement ring rebuilt, it was getting thin, and examined it carefully before accepting the repair.

chirrupybird · 23/10/2026 20:43

Why do you have two engagement rings?

chirrupybird · 23/10/2026 20:45

If you paid by credit card you could claim back from them?

BirthdayStress · 23/10/2026 21:37

@chirrupybird I’ve actually got 3 😅

@chirrupybird I’m not too sure. But I’ve decided to see how it is after being polished now, I’m hoping it’ll be ok and I’ll have no more issues at least not any time soon.

it only needs to last 3-4 years, I'm sue it will be fine until you upgrade again, particularly as you won't be wearing it.

Ah ok, I have never worked in a retail jewellers shop so I dont know how they would usually measure
We use ring gauges which is a set of 50+ "sample size" thin rings which looks like a big set of keys! The conical shape thing is a size stick which as you say measures the size of the ring... rather than your finger.

Thesafetygeneral · 23/10/2026 22:32

That doesn’t look brand new, there are marks all over the gold. I would let them polish it as it’ll come up lovely I’m sure. If you trusted them with that much of your money then you should trust them to fix it.

FeralWoman · 23/10/2026 23:36

@FountainCourted Found the post linking the thread, thank you.

@BirthdayStress Third engagement ring? For one engagement to one man? Why? What’s wrong with the two other rings? Pick a ring you truly love. Just one. It’s not a car. You don’t need to upgrade it as new features come on the market. Diamonds and gold are timeless. I got engaged 27 years ago. Still love my ring. My mum got engaged 55 years ago. She still loves her ring. She had it resized recently to fit over her arthritic fingers so she can wear it again. Maybe you’ll like your engagement ring better if you add a wedding ring next to it, and then in the future an eternity ring.

Goatsarebest · 23/10/2026 23:44

Is upgrading your engagement ring every few years a thing now. I've never heard of it before.
