Travelling in leggings/activewear?

I know there’s a lot of thoughts about this so I figured I’d ask, what does everyone travel in? Usually I either wear jeans or my heaviest item, but I’m travelling quite late on in the day this time so want comfort. But I know people are quite disparaging of people who travel in active wear 😂

I think you can wear almost anything you like as long as you are washed, clean and tidy!

I do absolutely draw the line at pyjamas in the airport though.

How sad that in this day and age a woman can't just get on a plane wearing whatever she is comfy in without stressing about what other women may think.

I don’t think it’s sad.

We are all different.

Some people travel lots and some people don’t.

Some people feel insecure or simply like to be prepared.

Mumsnet is a good place to ask.

Cranx · 21/10/2026 14:45

When did the term tracksuit go out of fashion? It’s now activewear/co-ord/set. I don’t think anyone would even notice a woman wearing a tracksuit on a plane.

olivepicanto · 21/10/2026 15:57

I personally only fly in a crisp white shirt. And pair it with a yoga pant (just the one leg)

my comfy, cosy, snuggly cashmere pashmina.

all topped off with a red lip. Usually the top one

TheWytch · 21/10/2026 15:59

Jeans here but wear what you like.

Whatthefork1 · 21/10/2026 16:16

Who honestly cares what anyone else wears? But also who travels in jeans!?

The point being that we shouldn't have to worry about what others think. We should be able to dress in whatever makes us comfortable without a second thought. I mean sad as in upsetting, wrong that we as women still feel that we are being judged by others for everythng we do. Are you honestly saying you cant see that it is wrong and sad or upsetting to think that some women feel they will be judged by others to the point that they cant just get dressed and get on a plane without feeling like they might be getting it wrong.

What I am saying is that it’s a bit disrespectful to call people sad. Lots of posters are getting at op for asking when she may be a confident women in lots of other ways. We all have different hang ups!

If she is reassured that it’s perfectly ok to wear leisure wear on a plane then op may feel better about her trip, it’s as simple as that.

Flamingojune · 21/10/2026 19:59

I like 'active' wear but not co-ordinated sets

I’m very confident in everything but my dress sense/appearance lol

The only times leggings look bad in public is when they’re worn without a bum-covering top. Additional points lost if there is a hole in the seam on the bum.

LlynTegid · 21/10/2026 20:05

It depends in part I think on where you are travelling to. If it is a country with style such as Italy or France, you will stand out like a sore thumb as a Brit, which you may not wish to do.

MasterGland · 21/10/2026 20:10

I didn't know it was looked down upon to travel in active wear. In the early 90's I can remember my mother bought us all matching shell suits to travel in. I can still remember the noise we made as we walked through the airport.

I saw a lady at the airport last summer in what I presume was a blue and white striped co-ord set, a shirt and wide leg trousers and I really couldn’t decide if it actually was a co-ord or if she’d just come out in her PJs. It was an early flight!

G5000 · 21/10/2026 20:13

I wear merino wool, it regulates teperature and doesn't stink when you sweat like cotton or polyester. SuperNatural or Icebreaker normally. Layers.

CookieWarbler · 21/10/2026 20:14

Someone put a post in AIBU rcently about threads they were sick of seeing and the number one thread they mentioned was 'what trousers should I wear to fly'. At the time I wondered what on earth they were on about as I'd never seen one. Now, it's all I seem to see! 😂

Wear whatever is comfy OP. Life is too short to care what someone shallow at an airport might think.

bridgetreilly · 21/10/2026 20:15

Leggings plus a loose dress/tunic.

Having sat in a carriage of travelling French people on Eurostar I can confirm that they weren’t dressed any different from the British! Nor were the Italians on my recent flight back from Naples come to think of it .

Rothburypixie · 21/10/2026 20:17

I will always wear activewear or a comfortable co-ord and cosy hoodie because planes are freezing. Also normally a sports bra and massive knickers. I can’t bear to be uncomfortable when I travel.

im a huge Lulu fan. Lots of stretchy comfy layers, and isotoner slippers to switch into.

Another Lulu fan here. I live in their leggings and also love their long sleeved technical tops with the thumb holes. Just so comfy and cosy.

I don't wear jeans ever, the only trousers I own are hiking trousers, and i'm not going to fly in a dress.

I don't think their is anything wrong with wearing leggings to fly at all. I think some of it is about how you look in them to be fair. If you look like you are dressed for the gym, that would look out of place. Trying to be diplomatic, but certain figures/shapes perhaps look scruffy and not put together in leggings, so again, I think this is generally frowned upon. But leggings can look good if styled the right way and they suit you.

Goodness me. Did you not read my explanation. I didnt call anyone sad. I was referring to the situation as being sad. Maybe look up what sad means in a dictionary.
I mean I am sad, or unhappy that OP feels that she has to worry about this. Do you really not know how the word sad has been used in English language apart from as a derogatory term?
I dont appreciate you accusing me of calling the OP sad when I was trying to show support by saying that I was unhappy to think that people have yo worry about such things. Maybe work on your reading comprehension because at no point did I call the OP sad ir anything else. I certainly have not been disrespectful to OP.

GoodLife26 · 21/10/2026 22:58

I couldn’t care less what anyone else travels in. I aim to be comfortable.

seahorsessky · 21/10/2026 23:44

Most people do wear activewear for work/travel etc now. Maybe depends what you mean by activewear. Wide leg black trousers made from a fairly heavy fabric are comfortable, work appropriate for most if you're going straight into a meeting/lunch etc. You can pair with a smartish loose tshirt/blouse/loungewear hoodie for something comfortable but nice. Lots of people are still wearing leggings on flights, though.

Empress13 · 21/10/2026 23:51

Comfy co-ord with elasticated waist can’t beat it!

MandingoAteMyBaby · 21/10/2026 23:52

Just wear what you normally wear. You don’t need special travel clothes.
