Travelling in leggings/activewear?

I know there’s a lot of thoughts about this so I figured I’d ask, what does everyone travel in? Usually I either wear jeans or my heaviest item, but I’m travelling quite late on in the day this time so want comfort. But I know people are quite disparaging of people who travel in active wear 😂

Literally the only place where anyone gives a fuck what you wear at the airport is bloody Mumsnet. Nobody cares in real life and half the Mumsnetters who turn their noses up at leggings and sportswear probably wear them in real life far more often than they’d care to admit and also don’t notice if anyone else does on a bloody flight. They’re just parroting bullshit they read in fashion magazines in the 1980s.

These are the same people who think you can’t wear a skirt above knee length in an office and insist you must wear a tailored suit for an interview and can only have ‘short, neat nails with a natural nude polish’ at work. Or that you can’t wear a dark colour to a summer wedding and all wedding attire has to make you look like Kate Middleton.

They’re not actually looking at what real people wear or actually paying any attention to shifting trends. They’re just spitting up dated nonsense that people who actually fly, attend normal weddings and work in offices have been debunking for decades.

Joggers or soft trouser, t shirt and a jumper. Don’t overthink it, no one cares on a flight!

Yes

why are everyone's jeans so uncomfortable?

Standard woman's clothing is designed with 20cm difference between waist and hip circumference. I have 35cm difference which means finding jeans that don't gape at the waist or are too tight in the hips is a challenge. 90s were fabulous with low cut jeans but I don't think I can get away with that in my 40s.
I do have a very comfortable wide leg pair in thin cotton with drawstring instead of zip which I do wear when travelling but I wouldn't wear a fitted pair because it cuts off my circulation when I sit down for a long periods. All women in my family have the same issue with clothes.
And that is even before you consider sensory issues around textured fabric, labels and the fact that I always bloat when I travel so I may not be able to zip up the pair of jeans I started in half way through my journey.

But then I find the jeans are too big when I’m standing up and the waistband falls to my hips.

I think maybe it’s the shape of the jeans then possibly? I could wear a size 6 and be uncomfortable sitting down/after eating. But a size 8 is perfect. In some styles I’m a 10. It’s just trial and error

Nevermind31 · 21/10/2026 09:35

Is this off the back of the other thread???
I only judge the people who turn up showing way too much skin (no need to turn up in a sports bra or with your ass cheeks hanging out), and think that those who turn up in a structure blazer clearly don’t travel much…
wear what you want and is practical

If you're flying First Class on the BOAC Clipper to New York from Croydon Aerodrome then you obviously need a nice twinset and some stylish but simple pearls.
If you're flying on anything else wear whatever you feel comfortable in, because no one else cares....

The OP hasn’t said she is flying anywhere.

She could be taking the number ten bus for all we know.

I had a brutal long haul trip a few weeks ago, which included a few hours change over in a rubbish airport. On the way I wore a pair of barrel leg casual trousers which are stretchy and as comfy as joggers and a vest top and shoved a lightweight hoodie in my hand luggage. On the way back I wore a pair of baggy drawstring cargo pants and a t shirt. Doc Marten sandals both ways.

TBH if I actually had a pair of joggers that suited me I’d absolutely have worn them! I haven’t been able to find a pair that work for me, possibly because I’m short and have a deeply unattractive potbelly.

Yes. Jeans don’t work for me.

GoodkneeBadKnee · 21/10/2026 09:42

Wear what's comfortable. Seriously NO ONE CARES.

Detailedakoda · 21/10/2026 09:46

I travel quite a lot, have done for almost two decades and still can’t quite get the travel look right!! My take is the people who look like they’ve just thrown something on and still look great have spent hours getting ready (makes me feel better!!!) It now depends if I’m going long haul or short haul - short haul I tend to wear what I will wear out that day, went to Paris last week and just wore a sleeveless jumpsuit with a jumper and jacket over until I got there. Long haul I will go more comfortable but I still don’t want to look like I’ve rolled out of bed, I look really bad in my cuffed joggers I’m still after a decent pair. I actually prefer wide legged and a sweaty Betty jumper but I know a lot of people hate the thought of wide leg and plane toilets!

Boreded · 21/10/2026 09:49

I’m always secretly jealous of the people who wear PJs on the flight home…one day I will brave it (probably not)

leperol · 21/10/2026 09:50

The only criteria I have for travel is comfort, and something that won't show up scuffs and marks.

Easiest thing I've found is elastic waist tapered ankle jersey bottoms from Next. So comfortable, uncrushable, and with pockets. So good I have six pairs, three black and three navy. They are good enough to wear on arrival with a change of top also.

Shinyhappyapple · 21/10/2026 10:00

I travel in something comfortable and practical. It’s likely to be jogging bottoms, linen trousers with a narrow bottom or jeans in a jegging type fabric (currently I have straight leg Halaras). I’ve never worn a dress (I dont want the long fabric in the way when I’m going up and down stairs carrying luggage) and I wouldn’t wear wide legs (aeroplane toilets). Always layers on my top half and I may pack something lighter in my rucksack to change into on arrival (eg shorts, sandals) if it’s likely to be hot.

It makes sense for people to travel in their heaviest items if they aren’t checking a bag and the only time I would wonder ‘why’ at someone’s clothing choice would be if it seemed impractical.

ValleyofHumiliation · 21/10/2026 10:03

I cannot believe that in this day and age anyone cares what anyone else wears on a flight, or stresses about what to wear on a flight. Surely you’re noticed over the last decade or so that pretty much everyone wears comfortable casual clothes including business travellers and the folks in first class. The exception perhaps being the particularly elegant, well groomed ladies you might see from Italy or France but there’s no point trying to compete with them on style!!

memoriesringliketinnitus · 21/10/2026 07:29

I have a nice navy set that I’m considering wearing but I don’t want to look bad!

So like a tracksuit / co-ord set? Sounds perfect.

Denim4ever · 21/10/2026 10:11

I have a very comfy pair of stretchy jeans. Not quite skinny, not quite straight. They are good for winter long haul with some sort of trainers or boots. I flew to Japan in them and wore a big Claudia Winkleman Traitors style chunky black roll neck with a ribbed t underneath so I could bail out of the jumper if it got hot on the plane. I was glad I wore the jumper as it would have taken up too much suitcase room.

There are quite a lot of decent leisure wear style trousers out there at the moment but I'm not a fan of lounging on a plane in flappy wide legs.

Something involving leggings and difficult to pack knitwear is a winner.

With skirts or dresses there's the problem of what the flight socks look like, although I suppose something involving black opaque tights, flight socks, boots and a sweater dress might work on a winter flight.

Summer flights, I have always worn some sort of jean since the time I tried out flight socks with a skirt and felt it looked embarrassing. Lots of summer jeans have elasticated waistbands. The jogger style ones can usually be improved by getting rid of the waist ties/strings since the are rarely functional string ties.

Biggles27 · 21/10/2026 13:39

I wear black leggings when travelling long haul business class (or Virgin Upper Class). I’m more than comfortable being in the lounges, checking in, travelling etc

i honestly don’t think this is an issue unless they’re so thin you can see through them!

badboss2020 · 21/10/2026 13:41

People travel in pyjamas with rollers in their hair. I think active wear is more than acceptable.

ilovesooty · 21/10/2026 13:42

I live in bright patterned leggings. Thank goodness I don't care what other people think.

Kitchenbattle · 21/10/2026 13:46

I just want to be clear I don’t care what other people wear when travelling, I don’t judge them. I just do not wear active wear anymore.

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 21/10/2026 13:47

I prefer a wet suit and snorkel mask. Saves wearing compression socks and means no one talks to me. People do stare but that’s to be expected…. Admiration innit 😉

5128gap · 21/10/2026 13:49

Always leggings, vest, hoody and trainers. I have never felt disparaged and always felt comfortable.
My mind boggles at the thought of a subsection of the population hanging round airports assessing what other travellers are wearing and deciding if they are 'put together' or not, and that other people appear to think they must dress to pass this assessment.
How do you know who is assessing you? How do you get to know if you've passed or failed?

Foslan · 21/10/2026 13:50

I do one long haul flight per year and I usually just wear my usual clothes, jeans and a top, with a fleece in my bag if I need it. I don't like wearing leisure wear in public, but I normally pack some with me to wear in the hotel or at bedtime. I've just got used to wearing jeans when travelling so I don't find it uncomfortable, and it means I'm ready to be out and about on arrival. I never wear leggings except when doing sports, I find them really constrictive.

bababamama · 21/10/2026 13:52

Depends on length of flight and where I’m going. When I fly to the north in winter I’m in jeans, snow boots, thick jumper (with long sleeve t shirt or shirt under plus winter coat, hat scarf and gloves, it was minus 12 last winter when I arrived.

when I’m on a cheap package in our summer I wear normal summer clothes, on a winter sun trip it’s trickier so usually I opt for a seasalt or similar jersey dress with leggings underneath that I can take off towards the end of the flight plus trainers and a cardigan

FriendlyMedusa · 21/10/2026 14:00

Always keep in mind that anyone sad enough to care how others dress for travel is having far less fun than you. Be comfy.
