What is going on with Andy Burnham's social media?

I swear every post I see is following a formula:

  • personal anecdote
  • link to current issue
  • why this means I understand you
  • how I'm going to change the world
  • join us in doing so

The way they are written makes me cringe. Almost poetic and overly emotive. Maybe it just doesnt work on me.

Anyone else just want some normal?

If the policy is properly funded and implemented” is precisely the issue.

You have explained why someone’s personal bill might fall. You haven’t explained why care would become cheaper to provide, or how the state would afford the additional commitment. Will changing the triple lock raise enough? Unlikely. The government is already struggling to fund its current commitments, and with the costs of servicing it's current debts cant borrow any more. Who will pick up the shortfall?

How will this policy be implemented? Neither the NHS nor local councils have resources to spare. Private and investor-backed companies are already filling gaps, at great cost to tax and bill payers. Shareholder interests and the publics interest don't necessarily make great bedfellows... The water companies are a great example of this. Talk is cheap but the consequences are not for tax payers/bill payers, time and time again.

And we haven't even started on eligibility.

He has been explicit in that he does not have the detail yet he knows enough detail to know that people wont have to sell the family home...

The bar needs to be much higher than that.

He’s been in office for a couple of months: other politicians from across the political spectrum have grappled with and failed to tackle the social care crisis for decades. I’m happy to wait for the recommendations of the Casey report and for cross party talks on how they can be implemented, because I do believe this is a matter of personal conviction for the Prime Minister, and that if any politician is capable of improving the state of social care, it’s him.

KB who lied that she got offered a scholarship to Stanford University?

I can see why Tories want to ignore that lie.

To EU or not EU, that is the question...

I am sure that people can to toe to toe all day long about lies which have been told or even sleights of hand and mis information.

I will be amazed if any of this social care service comes to pass in any form remotely like Burnham is having the gullible believe with his ludicrous SM messages.

It’s the sort of promise that political hucksters through the ages have made. Before they had to come up with excuses for why the grand vision never happened, and then skip town.

True from Makerfield to four months later.

He immediately went on holiday leaving private and corporate decision makers in limbo or making rash decisions which are currently costing the country money and growth opportunities.

If you have ever been poor or to had to count your pennies you will know that you don't need the PM to tell you where the least eyewatering petrol prices are. Especially when the treasury has likely raked in c£1.2bn due to the Iran wars impact on oil prices.

if any politician is capable of improving the state of social care, it’s him.

Just spending other peoples money will not improve the state of social care.

Me too.

I would give anything for some substance in politics. I am so over "personality politics" and parlour tricks.

It didn’t take long for it ;

His Makerfield statement was categoric enough, he’d undermine everything he had said about strengthening democracy if he switched and all that.

quantumbutterfly · 21/10/2026 10:24

Oh you know..somebody else's problem of course.

Isn't that always the way😂

TY78910 · 21/10/2026 10:54

It’s not Andy Burnham though is it? It’s his PR team.
They have analysed what worked and what didn’t for the people before him (too rehearsed, soulless, corporate), analysed what warmed people to him (the connection to working class, he came across as the people’s person) and they are working with that. It probably works for the masses, might not work for those who are actually interested in politics, but mostly for those who just need someone to relate to - and they’re playing on that.

Quite. I am personally loving the "relentless domestic focus".

Sure but posters trying to present KB as some kind of an Insta guru is absurd when she panders to the lowest common denominators by picking on minority Muslims for having a Ramadan event and feeding strangers at Trafalgar Square is always going to be laughable.

I don’t mean to be for tit for tat about it, but the fuel map thing was actually a Rishi Sunak policy, which Rachel Reeves then adopted and the Prime Minister oversaw the official launch of. I do think there’s a lesson for him in it though, as clearly his comms around it landed badly, and I absolutely agree it was his first major social media misstep.

But the fact remains, I like the Prime Minister, and I - like a lot of people in the country, judging by the polls so far - am prepared to give him a longer grace period before I dismiss him out of hand, because I think what we desperately need as a country is a calmer political discourse, where leaders are actually given time and space to make and implement proper policy.

Its good to hear a different perspective, though.

I suppose at least she does not do posts promoting things like Lemon & Scampi Fries. If would take a least a fancy hand bag for her to sell out.

She doesn't have many followers, so it's easy for a PR firm to get 'friendly' users to post comments.

True ; Ik people like AB’s stuff I just can’t see it, I’d find it so cloying.

I like seeing KB covering LFW, literary festivals and small businesses. Plus lower on the schmaltz.

FedUpCelery · 21/10/2026 11:19

The difference can be big though. There is a petrol garage 8 miles from me where petrol is usually 15p per cheaper per litre than my local.

If I’m nearby I do opt to fill up there instead.

I don’t think a lot of people do know to check on Google. It’s a recent widget that Google have been pushing to their search results when you search a petrol garage name.

Well, if anyone knows how to get the prices up for diesel so they can be seen at a glance I may change my mind when I see the savings.

By the poor do you mean working people on low wages, because they’re the most screwed over.

NorthXNorthWest · 21/10/2026 11:28

Unless KP is part of AB's social media team she has little relevance to how AB is using social media to engage.

And as for Muslims for having a Ramadan event and feeding strangers at Trafalgar Square.

Wasn’t part of the criticism about women being segregated and praying behind the men? Were her comments about Diwali offensive? Are you saying a woman shouldn’t question that because religion is involved?

I think all religions deserve scrutiny.

If you're a saver you'll love him even more with the interest rates going through the roof! It is the mortgage holders who may struggle....

What does follower count ultimately mean? I rarely leave a like on media no matter the topic. I only ever like posts on MN because they are anonymous - other than to the original poster.

Lhori · 21/10/2026 11:32

I really don't like his social media style but I think it works for his target market. My main issue is that most of what he says is meaningless. The budget will be more interesting because that is when he has to put our money where his mouth his.
