To hate the pressure for facial injections

TrickNotTreats · Today 09:05

Virtually all of my friends and family members (youngest are my nieces in mid twenties!) have Botox/fillers etc .

Everyone is asking me (or trying to give me friendly advice/recommendations) why I don’t. Being nice about it telling me I’d look better and that they just want to help me .

Am I really that odd to not be getting this done? I’m 43 and yes I have a few little lines (and apparently loss of volume round eyes thanks SIL for pointing that out !) but they aren’t that bad and also if relevant I’m autistic and I really hate change I think if I made even slight tweaks to my face I’d hate it and feel panicky! I also have sensory issues and if it feels weird I’d hate it!

Still it’s constant they keep saying to get it done. At family gatherings it’s now the number one topic of conversation who has had what done, the latest things they are into. They all look amazing but I feel a bit ‘odd one out’ and struggle to join in conversations!

Each to their own I know but it’s become like a cult and they want to recruit me. Sometimes it knocks my confidence a little but not enough for me to do it.

Dreading over Xmas the conversations and comparisons and inevitable ‘you should get Botox/tear trough filler/lip filler etc’

How weird. I'm 44 and I know a few of my friends get Botox, but it's not really a topic of conversation.

Can't you steer them onto something more interesting?

SnowflakesandSlippers · Today 09:28

I would never have botox, wrinkles are a gift, they show your body living and changing. Interestingly, the ones who seem to love botox and fillers seem to often be anti-vaxers, which seems odd to me. If you'll accept botox etc then surely you have no real care what goes into your body.

Fledgedup · Today 09:28

Ask them if they realise how rude they're being? Tell them you're not their project.
I'm sorry, this sounds awful, and so vacuous.

MojoMoon · Today 09:29

Are you in Essex or Cheshire?

I'm curious as to which socio-demographic group this is
It's certainly very different from mine,.and I'm a similar age

Dancingdahlia · Today 09:29

Where do people work where “everyone” has had something done? I am interested as I don’t see it in my own colleagues/suppliers (creative business, London). The only place I’ve noticed loads of women with it is in my dad’s care home where all the young female carers have filler/lips done.

Covidwoes · Today 09:30

Ugh, how vacuous of them all! @SnowflakesandSlippers- I also know two anti vaxxers whose faces are full of botox and whose lips are full of collagen! Both thick as mince.

WinWhenTheyreSinging · Today 09:31

They’re being rude as buggery, so I’d just be rude back and tell them you’ve no wish to inject toxins and plastics in to your face.

How sad that your whole family are so insecure! I would make it very clear that you are happy in your own skin and they are to
stop banging on about it.

i find the trend terrifying. I have two girls. It’s absolutely right that I don’t have their juicy skin, their tight muscles, their natural youthful beauty. I don’t want to compete, which is essentially the reason for fillers - trying to look as good as the young. It would also be an awful message to them as a parent- I am so insecure that I need plastic surgery to try and look more like you. It’s the worst of messages on every level.

be blunt op. Tell them to shut up or you’ll start picking them apart, physically and also their insecure personalities that drive them to plastic surgery and then pushing it rudely onto others.

brownbootsandhats · Today 09:32

i my head i be telling them to

“piss off, I am not so vain as to inject poisons into my face

I like the fact that a life lived shows on the face

I won’t be ashamed of getting old “

in reality I would be head to one side “that’s nice “

So depressing. Have you pointed out that the people who have Botox/filler simply look like people who have had Botox/ filler?

Kayleeees · Today 09:32

I can’t stand the bloody instagram culture.

YANBU!

JLou08 · Today 09:32

I think you're surrounded by rude, shallow people. A lot of my friends and colleagues have it, no one has ever tried recommending it to me. That's not because I have perfect skin, it's definitely aged and not smooth and plump.
Would you tell someone with small or saggy boobs that they'd look better if they got breast enhancement surgery? Would you tell someone overweight that they would look better if they went on weight loss injections?

Venice93 · Today 09:33

I am 55 and have never had anything done of this nature, never will, and it’s never ever mentioned or discussed in my family or friendship circles. You are not an outlier, though you may be in this group. They are very rude. Lots of good suggestions from PP. I’m in the “why would I inject toxins into a perfectly healthy body?” camp. My dentist has talked about how lip fillers affect stretch and flexibility of mouths/lips as well. No thanks. Also ASD so black & white thinking here: hard no.

I feel like I’ve become a project to them almost I feel like every time I see anyone they are trying to persuade me I should have it done. Nobody can seem to understand that I know I could look a bit better / more rested / a little younger but I don’t want to feel or look different and it’s not something I think about that much and they just seem confused ! They do all look great but I couldn’t risk it - I’d be the one who ended up with a droopy wonky eye or a reaction or something !

No decent, ethical clincian would treat someone who was reluctant and not 100% ok with the risks of any cosmetic procedure. I have a bit of fillers in the large fingerprint-sized dents left by cyctic acne on my cheeks. Botox would help with the appearance of the scars on my forehead where filler can't be placed. But the risks scare me, so my clinician (who is a registered nurse) said she would therefore not recommend botox for me, and have it written on my notes that it's not to be offered.

There is obvs no way you should have this done, and no way a proper clinician would ever treat you. So therefore it's completely non-negotiable; your family need to back the fuck off.

Redplasticboat · Today 09:37

I am a similar age and have never had any of these things. As far as I know neither have any of my friends or family.

Actually 1 friend needed botox but that was medically recommended as she was damaging a tooth when stressed.

Edited for typo

Girlwithavibe · Today 09:39

I am 50 and no one has ever mentioned anything about needles or injections to sort my face out !
The people u are surrounding yourself with sound self absorbed shallow and bloody rude and boring if that's all they keep going on about !
If I was u I'd say no thanks no if prefer to just stay as I am !
Then get some new friends lol 😁

Your family is just weird. Precisely one of my large family gets Botox and she’s known throughout the family these days as Pokerface.

Pokerface 😂😂😂

Bringemout · Today 09:42

Everyone I know tries to pretend they haven’t done anything. Just say you aren’t interested and never will be.

HappyLizard23 · Today 09:42

I’ve had filler and I would never dream of telling someone else they need it! So rude!

Greengagesnfennel · Today 09:42

I’m too vain to get injections. People look worse than people who have never had them after about 5 years. It’s not worth a few years of looking better, for a lifetime of looking like a freak. Plus I’m sure there with be long term health issues associated with it - we just don’t know what they are yet.

Longtimelurker1980 · Today 09:42

i am a teacher. In one school I visited recently the head had lip fillers and looked like she’d been punched in the face. I just think it’s wrong for people who teach children to ‘wear’ that trend and insecurity so obviously. I couldn’t take her seriously for some reason. We also find our younger ones doing it, often the TAs, really talented gorgeous educators who think they need to fill their beautiful faces with shit like you’d buy a handbag. It’s so sad. One had her lips done before her wedding and she looked like she’d been punched in the mouth. For weeks. Who wants a wedding photo looking like you’ve done ten rounds with Tyson fury?

ParsonMaybold · Today 09:43

They sound odd. I have Botox. Sometimes it comes up in conversation when a friend asks me what products I use on my skin. A few of my friends now go to my aesthetician. But it’s not something we constantly talk about, that’d be tiresome.

Hoardasurass · Today 09:46

I've never had nor ever will have botox or fillers as I find them ridiculous and dangerous.
Botox (even when done well) prevents people from having proper facial movements and expressions and makes them look wrong and thats before you look at the long-term impact of injecting botulinum toxins into your body, including but not limited to muscle scaring and permanent nerve damage both of which are cumulative.
Fillers just make you look ridiculous and older than you are.
Like you @TrickNotTreats im autistic (though older than you) so that might impact my opinion on both botox and fillers but I really wish people would stop using them and the last person who tried to pressure me into getting them ended up being upset by me pointing out that unlike them I was neither insecure or vain enough to waste a fortune on making myself look like a knock off barbie who can't even shop simple emotions.
Now whilst my comments may have been brutality honest and caused a lot of hurt amongst those who have these procedures and accusations of inappropriateness and cruelty i just pointed out that it was no more inappropriate than her comments about me not using them or pressuring me to have unnecessary harmful medical treatments. Nobody has ever brought up botox or fillers with me since
