To get this rooster gone?

We have a farm near our house that's funded by taxpayers so everyone gets to visit. It's staffed by volunteers. We were walking on the evening and there was a rooster who had these beautiful black feathers that turned colorful when sunlight hit them.

Without thinking, I reached out to try to pet the gorgeous bird. He ran away and I thought no more of it. A couple minutes later he snuck up behind me and pecked at my leg enough to draw blood.

I told the people managing the farm and he was gone the next day, butchered.

My husband says I was being unreasonable, that the rooster was just defending his personal space and safety. I however like to feel safe when out for a walk. Was I unreasonable to report this rooster?

(With my user name, not sure i can comment 😂)

Maybe the way they see it, is that if OP had been a child it could have been pretty nasty. I don't know much about cockerel behaviour, but they fight predators, so maybe he had already been aggressive?

LoisGriffinskitchen · Yesterday 09:05

Today in “things that didn’t happen”.

that’s not how these farms work. I volunteer on one. Nice try though OP.

chirrupybird · Yesterday 09:08

You were being unreasonable it's a farm not a petting zoo, you don't touch the animals and you know that you can get pecked by a rooster. Would you try to pet the bull? It's the animals home you are just a visitor and if you were worried for children anyone sensible would keep them away from a rooster they can be quite scary. If you take away all the animals that might peck or bite or knock someone over there would be virtually no animals left on the farm.

MyLifeInBooks · Yesterday 09:09

If this is true, humans at their worst.

Rule #21 of being on or near a farm: stay away from Roosters & Geese they are territorial and happy to defend their home and themselves.

HelpMeGetThrough · Yesterday 09:19

Never pet a cock unless invited.

So because you couldn’t keep your hands to yourself and then keep your mouth shut the poor bird is dead.

I'd hate for you to have to find out what happens to the 50% of chicks that are male which are born on farms and in small holdings all over the country ....

Ah so just one more bird so OPs ignorance, entitlement and irresponsibility doesn’t matter? Got it.
Millions of people die every year too. Guess it wouldn’t matter if someone came round and bumped you or a loved one off then would it? Just another statistic.

I'm so terribly sorry, but I can't get exercised about one aggressive cockerel that might have pecked out a child's eye the next time having its neck wrung.

DorsetKnobBiscuit · Yesterday 14:53

We still don't know if the cockerel is dead.
OP never came back to say how she knows this.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · Yesterday 15:42

you tried to pet a cockerel? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

It’s incredibly common. Roosters are tolerated until they turn mean towards people and then they become dinner. There’s so many of them that it’s not worth keeping nasty ones around.

You weren’t unreasonable. Lots of people consider the first offence to be the last offence when it comes to roosters so it’s not surprising really.

Sorry but the word offence and rooster in the same sentence really tickled me🤣
My auntie had a violent rooster she used to carry him around under her arm as a ‘time out’ to calm him down or maybe assert dominance I’m not quite sure but he always behaved better after this.
But yes common knowkedge that roosters can be absolute twats and if the general public have access that means children too, you can’t really have a rooster terrorising 5 year olds.

Please stay from animals. You sound like a moron.

StayCoolLikeAPenguin · Yesterday 19:01

Why's everyone talking about 'petting' a 'rooster'? 'Stroke a cockerel' is what we'd say in England isn't it?

Pallisers · Yesterday 19:02

You'll be trying to tickle a swan next and then you'll know what an aggressive bird is!

You shouldn't have reached out to pet him. He was not a pet.

sunnybaros · Yesterday 19:33

Poor rooster was just protecting his space.

RaggedRocks · Yesterday 19:37

Don't let Trump know, next thing he will do a video of himself wrestling with the rooster.

MyAzureZebra · Yesterday 19:46

Yabu. Stay away from animals in future, you pose a hazard to their welfare and lives.

Give your head a wobble. 😡

NoSnakesHere · Yesterday 20:57

Unreasonable and you know it! Imagine encroaching on another beings personal space and then getting mad that it chose to defend itself. Give your head a shake and think outside of the me mine and I!!

Wins the thread 🏆

BuildbyNumbere · Today 08:11

So you think you have the right to just go around touching any animal you feel like, what, because he’s a “farm animal”. Do you walk around just trying to pet any dog you come across??? He retaliated to what he obviously deemed as a thread, which you were … a stranger trying to grab him, and now he’s paid the ultimate price for your stupidity. You are being very unreasonable to think otherwise.

BuildbyNumbere · Today 08:14

Kate8889 · 16/10/2026 18:04

Since people are just doubting what happened now, I'll close this thread and keep away from any animals __

Probably for the best … don’t want any others to suffer due to your stupidity, quite frankly!

MuffinCHeeler · Today 08:42

Human tries to pet an animal who doesn't want to be petted (which is fine as it isn't a requirement of being a cockerel).
Animal reacts with the only way it has to defend itself and its flock, which is literally his job as the male of the flock.
Fully grown human whines about it instead of just accepting it was their fault for trying to pet the animal.
Animal gets killed through no fault of their own, probably because the owner doesn't want the bad reviews and targeting when the person inevitably moans about it online.
Human now wants everyone to make them feel better about their overreaction that had consequences.

Really hope you never go on safari OP.
