Drinking wine in the park while children play?

I took my little one to the park yesterday afternoon and there was a mum and daughter sitting on a blanket with a picnic and a bottle of wine with 2 plastic glasses while the little ones were playing.
They were sitting chatting and watching the kids who were around primarily school age playing together.

I didn’t think a lot at the time but maybe thought it was a bit funny, would you think it was ok to crack open a bottle of wine in the play park?

I've said it before and I'll say it again- there are loads of middle class mums with middle class drinking problems on mumsnet. The comments reflect that - lots of people here seem to think this is OK.

Of course it isn't normal or acceptable to be drinking wine while looking after your kids at the park.

I’m giving up. Leave the boozers to it.

@EppingIsFun

it is ok. It’s one bottle of wine between two people

But why isn’t it ok to have had a glass of wine while looking after a child?

You haven't explained why.

I asked this a few pages back. I know some people think you should be able to drive your kids to hospital in an emergency - but why only children?

When my children were at primary school it was normal to go to a pub with a garden on a Friday and have a couple of drinks with other parents.Children playing together on the green and having fun. Not sure what the problem is TBH .

Yes I think quite a few of the parents at my son's school used to do that too.

I didn't go because I was working.

STTE. Complete non issue.

Plenty of people do this - especially in the summer months when they're staying at the park for a couple of hours and having food as well.

Why can't people do anything without alcohol? Why couldn't they just drink Fanta in the park, or take a flask of tea or something?

Fanta is probably less healthy for you than wine is!

And tea out of a flask is pretty yuck.

I wouldn't tend to drink wine in a park, but then I am not into picnics. I might get a coffee but that's a preference not because I think anyone who drinks alcohol is alcoholic.

Also, some people don't drive anyway and... Uber.

When I go to the football there is always a mum a grandad and approx 10 year old sitting on the same bench. They eat sandwiches obviously bought from home, they have 2 tins each of gin and tonic and the kid has two mini cans of Coke/sprite or whatever. I am always envious 😂

This is basically how we survived Covid lockdowns in our village.
Kids playing in the park every day 2-5pm ish.
wine with picnics in summer.
mulled wine / hot chocolate in flasks in winter.

Is it any different to children playing in the pub play area while their parents have a glass of wine?

Yes, it's cheaper

What is it that folk can't even sit watching children play albeit having a picnic but needing to consume alcohol. Would the purpose of the outing be adults having opportunity to consume alcohol or take children out to park to play. Great, they must live near the park and presumably didnt have to drive. I'm not against alcohol and do enjoy a glass but, taking kids out to a public park, nope.

What if they don't have gardens? As a PP said her and friends living in London don't?

Why can't they have a glass of wine while watching kids play?

And what about things like festivals? Many of them are family friendly and people have a drink while kids play. Or like when I was a kid and cider was consumed at the local cricket match while the kids played on the village green?

I could not cope in a park with kids without it. I don't even understand the question 😕

Need hot mulled wine in our local park today. It's a bit nippy

Where is this park and are they still there with their wine? Asking for a friend

I cracked open a beer with our friends at the playground/park recently while the kids played together. We was all fine, not drunk, just enjoying a catch up, some autumn sun and letting the kids run around.

It's a shame playgrounds don't have gin bars for the adults... As per Jen Bristers brilliant stand up piece 😂

Many years ago, our childminder always had a glass of wine poured for when the last child of the day had been collected.
She had two of her own to care for, but no-one questioned her need for 'medication'.
Needs must.

She had a glass of wine poured and ready every day at pick up time? Were you not in the least bit concerned about this?
