Drinking wine in the park while children play?

I took my little one to the park yesterday afternoon and there was a mum and daughter sitting on a blanket with a picnic and a bottle of wine with 2 plastic glasses while the little ones were playing.
They were sitting chatting and watching the kids who were around primarily school age playing together.

I didn’t think a lot at the time but maybe thought it was a bit funny, would you think it was ok to crack open a bottle of wine in the play park?

I’m not judging, my first thought was there’s no toilet in this park and I know after the first glass I’d have to go and find a loo but maybe that’s just me.

Oh you so are judging! If they'd been drinking evian you wouldn't have started a thread on that would you?

wine with a picnic is a well established tradition.

also, what do you think is in those “water” bottles all the moms are toting around on a Saturday afternoon?

Noooo! Seriously???? (My genuine response)

MickyMoonshine · 16/10/2026 14:26

What a lovely thing to do.

Oh come on, that's not what you meant at all! You were judging. Their toilet needs didn't once cross your mind.

LowlandLucky · 16/10/2026 14:31

And very soon those children will be drinking in the park because they have grown to believe it is normal behaviour.
Hopefully none of the children in their care ever have an accident when Mummy & Granny are boozing in the park or go missing. Can you imagine the paramedics or police turning up and you reek of booze?

Dontlletmedownbruce · 16/10/2026 14:32

I drink in front of my kids, I usually have to drive to the park so wouldn't drink there. I see nothing wrong with normalising what is a typical adult thing to do. Personally coffee would send me to the toilet faster than wine. Have you raised your concerns OP withthe coffee vendors

Each to their own but I always managed to take my kids to the park without needing an alcoholic beverage. Maybe a glass of wine would’ve made it less tedious 🙈 Actually, I’m sure alcohol is prohibited in public outdoor spaces where I live.

I always remember taking DC to a local play park and there were two middle-aged women sitting on the bench sharing a small bottle of vodka and some Diet Coke 😂 No children with them! I found that really amusing.

migraineosaurus · 16/10/2026 14:32

sadly this cant happen in Glasgow where we’re not trusted to drink out in the open.

sounds like a lovely afternoon though!

Ohhelpwhatnow · 16/10/2026 14:32

OK so long as they drink small amounts and don't let any children have it.

Where do you mean? The water bottle part

Cattery · 16/10/2026 14:34

When our kids were small me and friend used to have drinks indoors after school pick up. The kids played. They got fed. They’ve got kids of their own now. No one came to any harm.

It is perfectly normal behaviour. Go down to any busy park on a hot day and you will see loads of people sitting around eating and drinking. It doesn't mean they are getting wasted or causing trouble.

SatinHeart · 16/10/2026 14:35

OP you are judging a bit or you wouldn't have started the thread.

I don't think I'd do this but mainly because day drinking makes me incredibly sleepy. Plus all our decent playgrounds are a car ride away so I'd most likely be driving.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 16/10/2026 14:37

Spain would blow your mind, loads of parks here have a bar or are right next to one. Parents eat and drink (yes, alcohol) while the kids play in the park.

They're more likely to have an accident while their parents are scrolling their phones.

That's like a million times more likely than two women having a glass of wine and an accident occurring.

IStillHearTheWaves · 16/10/2026 14:40

Sounds lovely to me!

Swissmeringue · 16/10/2026 14:41

I think a bottle of wine with a picnic and some company sounds lovely. I also think modelling a healthy (moderate) relationship with alcohol in front of children is a perfectly reasonable thing to do. My kids have seen me have a glass of wine with a picnic or Sunday dinner. We live in Cambridge and in the summer any green space is full of people having picnics with a Pimm's or prosecco. I'm pretty sure the vast majority of water bottles have water in them though! Mine certainly does, I feel a bit rebellious if I put squash in it.....

A lot of people don't drink every time they take the children to the park...

Get a grip, they probably weren't getting shit faced.

Exaggeration pretty much.

There’s nothing to suggest they needed alcohol. Maybe they just wanted some.

I don’t drink at all so wouldn’t do this. But I don’t think we can say that from one instance of two women drinking but not appearing drunk (I think OP would have mentioned) that there’s a big issue with their behaviour or their relationship to alcohol.

yeah its just you. Come on you wouldn’t have posted this if they were drinking coffee.

SillyG · 16/10/2026 14:48

In a posh area, with a good wine its fine.

Poor area, they are just piss heads.

Personally, its a no from me...

You can’t stop living an adult life doing adult things when you have kids. I remember a woman who wouldn’t do any ironing until the kid was in bed in case he burnt himself. He was 8! Didn’t get it then and I don’t get it now. Lighten up ffs
