She is an adult born and raised in this country. I mentioned the Winnie the pooh anniversary and was very surprised when she had no idea who he is. I am not sure how you can never have picked this information up.

Constantrunner · 13/10/2026 19:39

She really wasn't winding me up sadly.

How old is she?

Voltorb · 13/10/2026 19:40

Of course she knows who Winnie the pooh is, she was clearly joking.

She is in her fifties.

Did she grow up in a home with no books?

CheeseWisely · 13/10/2026 19:41

I have a friend my age (early 40s) born and brought up in the UK that has never heard of many of my childhood favourites. Winnie The Pooh is quite a tough one to have completely escaped though I’d say.

Possibly yes, or very few.

Yes I woukd find it quite amazing OP.
But then I remember a conversation with one the mothers of my son's bf when he was at primary school many years ago and it emerged she had never heard of the Hound of the Baskervilles. I was realky shocked and surprised by that.

I've never watched or taken an interest in the Disney versions of Winnie the Pooh but I love the books. Also A A Milnes wonderful poetry books When we were very young and Now we are six.

86newnameagain · 13/10/2026 19:48

Did you show her a picture? Even if you hadn’t read the books they are still characters printed on loads of things.

ShakyBake · 13/10/2026 19:48

Quite incredible but I'm astonished at the lack of political knowledge of the general public with a large amount of people unable to name the prime minister.

Common misconception but he actually isn't President Xi.

Hatty65 · 13/10/2026 19:52

I cannot believe anyone has never heard of WInnie the Pooh. Even if she wasn't aware of the books the Disney character is everywhere. It's almost impossible to walk through life and not see a Winne the Pooh pencil case or pyjamas.

seahorsessky · 13/10/2026 19:52

Even if you hadn't read them, you'd think people would see the memes.

Well, I hope you've never asked her to play Pooh sticks. You might get starnge looks.

No I didn't. Will when I see her next.

Edited

Hound of the baskervilles is a completely different level of popularity to Winnie the Pooh though. Lots of people havent read Sherlock Holmes, you might not have read Winnie the Pooh but the character is probably one of the most famous children's characters of all time

No she won't!

You really believe an adult in their 50s who was born, has grown up and spent their life in this country doesn't know who Winnie the Pooh is? Genuinely you believe that? Hmm

RikthePoet · 13/10/2026 19:59

Surprising but not impossible.

It's like that movie where the guy is the only guy to have heard of The Beatles but the opposite

There was a long thread last week on the same topic of things people havent heard off, I have no difficulty in believing her

Not every knowledge is universal

Why was @Fiddlebroom s post deleted, I was replying and it disappeared, it was a completely normal post

I'm not saying the knowledge is universal but she'd obviously have seen the character and would know who it is just through spending 5 decades in the country he was created in.
