Passengers observations at airports

At the airport. Passengers wearing thick coats. I’m sweating with a thin hoodie on.

Then young woman (mid 20s) in front of me in security wore boots up to the shin and we had to take our shoes off.

Thank goodness for Skechers slip ins

Anything else that baffles you about passengers at airports

Not something I’ve ever done. The most I’ve done is disembark to tarmac and walk straight to car. Never been on a bus.

You've been lucky.

For example there were several off pier stands at LGW, probably still are.

At LHR T5 I think maybe around 10% of the stands are off pier, so there's a specific gate departure lounge arrangement there that feeds the buses that head for the off-piers, that is on a lower level than the normal departures floor. There is a similar arrangement for those inbound to T5 arriving off pier.

It's also a fairly common arrangement (coach or maybe a long walk between terminal and steps) in the Caribbean, @RampantIvy has given other examples..

It depends on the airport. Kos airport, for example, puts passengers on a bus as they have no jet bridges. Leeds Bradford sometimes does depending on where the plane is.

In my experience it is actually quite common at many smaller or regional airports. Some don’t have any air bridges at all.

It used to be normal to walk between the plane and terminal but health and safety concerns (I presume) have meant busses are used even for quite short distances.

Last flight I took from Manchester, some stupid Woman was shouting that she was going to sue because they took about £300 of liquid cosmetic items from her at security, huge bottles of shampoo, conditioner, Sun cream, perfume etc. All went in the bin.
It would have cost her far less to check in a bag 😳

BorgQueen · Yesterday 12:18

At Manchester, you have to scan your Passport and your Boarding card to get through to security.

Oh and then you need to show boarding card to buy so much as a kit kat anywhere.
The one thing I find quite bizzare about foreign airports is that now you also have to go through passport check Airside before you can get to the gates. I don’t remember when it changed - Is it only European ones?
Why, when you already check your bags in / show passport or scan it to get through departures?

But why? Someone on another thread is raving about the joys of it. I don’t get it. Why do people not just mind their own business?

Why do you watch tv, fb reels, ticktok etc ? We humans interact, you do it as you are on a forum where you read what others are saying. No different really.

The woman in front of us taking loud calls on speakerphone during the safety procedure announcement before take-off. In the end, my husband tapped on the back of her seat and asked her to stop.

he one thing I find quite bizzare about foreign airports is that now you also have to go through passport check Airside before you can get to the gates.

Don't know about all foreign airports but flying from inside the Schengen zone to outside (e.g. France to UK) that's been the case for many many years (well it has been where I am, I guess other places might do things differently).

I.e. Go through security (need boarding pass for that), then when ready head for the specific block of gates serving ex-Schengen destinations and you will have your passport ( so you need that) checked by the authorities....then head for the gate.

Why's it done like that? Because not everyone routes via check-in desks these days and the police/Border are the empowered to do the official check, not airline or security staff.

It's this sort of little niggle that makes the idea there's a universal way/pattern of getting through all airports a bit questionable.

Always amazed at the sunglasses on in the queue for bag drop. Is it sunny inside the airport?

and the heavy make up flat 6am. Who can be bothered?

My sunglasses are prescription, I usually have my ordinary glasses away in their case. I can sleep without anyone noticing with my sunglasses on. I often nap on a long bus ride. My eyes are light sensitive, so I just leave my sunglasses on.
Re make up, some people are going straight to a wedding/event/family meet up etc. My DD's used to go to concerts, they followed DJ's around, Calvin Harris, Example, Swedish house mafia. They'd have their make up done, hair in rollers, sometimes their outfit on, with trainers (so they could dance).
I'm not baffled by anything I see, because I've traveled for different reasons, with people who have health conditions (so wheeled/carried oxygen machines, CPAPs etc). I know people who work in jobs, were they can't drink, except during booked time off, so fully relax once that drink at the airport is bought. I'm puzzled why so many posters are baffled at such easily explained things.

My rucksack is 40l and is hand luggage dimensions.

I take it as hand luggage for all the usual reasons (can't get lost, won't get damaged in the hold, don't have to wait for baggage pickup, and I want a rucksack rather than a case for travelling round the destination). A list of complaints about my local airport recently included excessive baggage pickup times - one woman got in at midnight and had to wait 3 hrs for her luggage!

Friend’s son and his family landed at EMA from Turkey and got back around 2am. Only flight I arrivals. The passengers waited a while and no
luggage. A guy looked through the entry flaps and saw the luggage on trolleys with no one to be seen. About 5 men, including friend’s son clambered through the flaps unloading and pushing them through the flaps

Wow, so much for security.

Wow, so much for security.

Err, yes....I raised eyebrows at that....

Obviously the bags shouldn't have been abandoned and I understand why some passengers did what they did but if it all really happened as described it sounds like a major security foul on many levels.

It's possibly just as well the 5 involved didn't get spotted...

Mokel · Yesterday 18:29

The flight was delayed by 2 hours. They only saw a couple of passport security guards that was it. All the landside shops were closed.

One fun thing to do if you're with a group and the seating is full, is actually start a queue at the gate.
Loads of people then get up and join it, and you can peel off the front and get a seat.

We once inadvertently caused a whole cruise-load of silver travellers to stand up on their walkers and queue behind us when we stopped to check something on a phone, near the gate.

Love a bit of airport observation but get bored pretty quick with it

They're wearing outerwear and footwear that would take up too.much space in their luggage.

I just wish people would look into rules before they travel, nothing worse than getting stuck behind someone who packs all the wrong things (like liquids) in their carry on.

Send them to the back of the queue again!

l’m a tolerant girl, me! 😀
