Passengers observations at airports

At the airport. Passengers wearing thick coats. I’m sweating with a thin hoodie on.

Then young woman (mid 20s) in front of me in security wore boots up to the shin and we had to take our shoes off.

Thank goodness for Skechers slip ins

Anything else that baffles you about passengers at airports

The need to have a drink in Spoons at 6am. I like a drink on holiday but 6am is coffee or tea time. And I’ve been on a 6am flight next to 2 drunk women which was pretty grim.

I was having a massive Aperol Spritz at Dubai airport a few weeks ago at 5.30am. I’d just arrived from Sydney and had been in the air for 15 hours having left at 9.30pm Sydney time. I had no idea what time it was or even what day except for the fact that I was fucking over it, was about to get on another 8 hour flight to Paris and it made me happy. So much so I had another two. 😁

...I had no idea what time it was or even what day ...

TBH there's an argument to be made that there's no such thing as local time, or "the right time for /wrong time for" at the major airports...it's all relative to where the heck you started your day or are going to end it.

You don’t need your passport at security…

Ha @crowowWas about to say ‘the people who think they need their BP and passport to go through security’. You don’t. You’ll be sent back to put them in a tray.

There will be a conformance check of BP and passport pre security. 😬. After that. Back in your bag.

Even worse are the ones who allow their kids close to the baggage claim, then look on in wonderment as they almost get totalled by people swinging heavy cases off the carosel.

For baggage claim I always either a) identify where it is going to come out and wait there or b) go and sit on one of the seats where I have a clear view of what's coming on the belt.

TBF at super crowded airports like Birmingham you don't really have much option but to do battle with the masses.

"like Birmingham"? You mean there is another similar hellhole of an airport?

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 13/10/2026 11:48

I like to start my holiday with an espresso martini. I don’t care what time of day it is 5am or 5pm 🤷🏻‍♀️. The lady with the boots obviously cared how she looked. It’s not a crime and the time given to shoes off and back on is neither here nor there. I wouldn’t wear Skechers to put the bins out never mind be seen in public. It doesn’t baffle me that you do Op. Live and let live.

notimagain · 13/10/2026 11:54

Having read some of the comments I think cutting a bit of slack might be required at times.

If you're a regular at a handful of airports you'll know how it usually works at those airports but there's a lot variability around when it comes to things like liquids process and what paperwork is needed where and when...and frankly a lot of airport signage isn't that great.

Well, you’re right, they could have been fashion boots, but there’s nothing in the OP to suggest they weren’t snow boots that the woman was wearing to a cold destination — I certainly have a pair of Vostok ones that come to mid-calf.

They’re a pain to take off at security, certainly, but if I were travelling to somewhere where I was planning to hike in icy conditions, I’d probably suck it up and wear them to travel in rather than take up half my case.

Luton is worse than Birmingham by an order of magnitude in my opinion.

I used to wonder about this until I realised some people had flown in from different time zones. So, it wasn’t 6am to them.

Quite. Imagine you’ve had a whole day awake including 8 hours at work. Then you get on a 15 hour flight that night where you sleep about 30 minutes in 8 minute bursts. Another day of flying is ahead of you.
Im surprised that more people aren’t mainlining Brandy at that point.

When security stopped a mother with twin toddlers and a slightly older child to search her bag, but waved the children through. They all ran off in different directions while she was told to wait to have her bag searched and the security people didn't seem to care when she got agitated. She'd had them on wrist strap type reins but had taken them off to go through security. Luckily, some people through the other side stopped the kids before they reached the escalators and brought them back.

Waiting for our connection to arrive in Bangkok. A man in his 20's started stripping off down to only a pair of tiny short shorts. He rolled out a yoga mat and and started standing on his head, spreading his legs open and doing crazy yoga moves. The 2 nuns nearby didn't know where to look (either did I).😂

Experienced flyer here; not that I like the process, but having done it many times, I know what to expect. Or so I thought. I flew Jet2 for the first time recently, and they tag the bags differently. If you had been near me, you would have thought I was inexperienced, as the staff came over to redo it for me.

I have done the new EU entry system a few times at different airports, it has been different in each one. Sometimes it is chaotic and at the last airport where there was a terminal to do the entry, not that difficult, but they were rammed into a small space and there was no direction to the next available one. Then, when you are done, it had a message about going to the e-gate, but they were not signposted and were down at one end, so not easy to see. There were people just standing around not sure what to do next.

My personal bugbear is people with loads of hand luggage, cabin case, backpack, coat, hat, duty free, food, and then another bag of stuff they couldn't fit. This is more usual on scheduled flights than the budget flights.

How does Jet2 do it to make them special? I know SAS had a special tag that was reusable and that was quite a novelty but no longer used now.

Superscientist · 13/10/2026 12:07

once when flying we found a quite row of 4 seats in between the main area and the terminals.
We were there excessively early as we had a longish drive the airport so had added extra time for chaos on the roads.
We took bets as people ran past us as to whether we would see them slunk backwards 20 minutes late all forlorn having missed their flights. It was about 50:50

You have to be quite... underdone in common sense and ability to think beyond your own experiences (I had to think about how to word this delicately!) to not immediately recognise why someone would be warmly dressed at an airport.

You must live in a terribly fashionable part to worry about what you wear on your feet to put the bins out. Who is going to notice?

Do you put mascara on to do the bins as well?

JudyTeeny · 13/10/2026 12:19

Flying out of Dallas I was behind a long queue for security. They were very thorough, belts, shoes, coats and hats off and in the trays. Two men in front of me dressed typically for Texas- jeans, cowboy boots, Stetsons, weren't asked to remove boots, belts or hats. It kept my DH and me speculating as to what their role was.

We used to go to Austria every summer. Most people wore their walking boots to travel despite the weather being warm. Too big to pack

And it is one thing that would really affect the holiday and be hard to replace. Always wear mine.

BillieWiper · 13/10/2026 12:51

I think I always look wrong as I get pulled over constantly. Once I was wrapped in this massive multicoloured Laotian woven rug thing while shivering and looking totally boss eyed. After a 18 hour journey.
Luckily I was entering my country of origin or they'd probably have said 'nah, you're alright. We don't want this one!'.

nuttymut · 13/10/2026 13:03

One of my bugbears is that some people have so much carryon luggage that they take up 3 trays and take ages going through security. I use fast track now

Monty36 · 13/10/2026 15:02

Saw the largest suitcase I have ever seen at Heathrow. It was the vast and supersized. How anyone got that on the belt for checking in and off a carousel I have no idea. Not just a big suitcase. This thing was not a trunk. It was a suitcase. I doubt I will see another.

Monty36 · 13/10/2026 15:11

I think what strikes me at any airport is just how busy they are.

Mokel · 13/10/2026 15:36

The airport which I am flying to has restrictions for outbound travel. Found my bag which i keep a pot of Vaseline in as smear the inside of my nostrils with it
