Are you someone who, when walking in a group, spreads across the whole pavement and when someone comes in the other direction just look blank and stupid like annoyed cattle that you have to move aside a bit

Is it because your brain switches off in a group environment or are you always like this?

This happens to me loads, I talked to male friends and colleagues about it and they had no clue what I meant; people seem to move out of the way for them.
Must be some kind of middle-aged-woman invisibility cloak issue

This infuriates me.

what was worse was taking a blind lady shopping in a mall. She had on sunglasses indoors and was holding my arm so I could guide her, but that didn’t stop people being surprised that we refused to part to let them through between us (as opposed to moving a very short distance to go on either side of the pair of us)

This is easily the breach of "pavement etiquette" that annoys me most. The groups who are the worst for it are massive nuclear family groups around Christmas.

It's particularly mind-boggling/enraging when the group is walking towards you, in other words they can SEE YOU COMING, and not one of them budges an inch to make room on a path that's in theory easily big enough for us to pass each other.

I honestly don't find this annoying. Just walk around. Takes seconds

If there was room to walk or run around it would be a non-issue. It's annoying because usually getting around them involves running into a road, a ditch or a wall. Which they KNOW.

cartagenagina · Yesterday 12:52

I stop moving and wait for them to step around me. I am a petty cow and am quite prepared to stand there all day until they move.

It really is arrogant behaviour.

Millerner · Yesterday 12:53

A niche irritation, but one that I can emphasise with.

Nodirectionhome · Yesterday 12:56

I am severely sight impaired and anyone, solo people or groups walking towards me on a narrow path or pavementis a problem. Particularly if they are looking down at their phone instead of in the direction they are walking. I tend to stop and wait for them to walk round me. (I can see enough to be aware that people are walking towards me, but not if they are approaching from right or left).

NoCapesDarling · Yesterday 12:58

I used to work in a very touristy town and it was a nightmare popping out to grab lunch- the tourists would spread out across the narrow pavement and walk VERY SLOWLY along the streets. Many times they would be quite rude when approached with a polite ‘excuse me’.

It was like they thought the whole world should stop for their holiday and screw anyone who lived or worked there who just needed a sandwich or to go to the GP.

Dandeliontea123 · Yesterday 13:02

It’s even worse when they spread out and are looking down at their phones at the same time.

Part of me wishes I could be like these people. Or the ones who block doorways or don't sat thanks when you hold a door open for them. Life must be really nice when you don't ever consider other people.

BorgQueen · Yesterday 13:04

Alsmost as annoying as a group of Mums at my Grandson’s school gates, ( always the same ones) they block the whole entrance trying to talk to the head, who, if she had the the slightest bit of sense, would stand behind the closed bit of the gate where there is plenty of space for them all to congregate and not at the open half where everyone else has to funnel through.

She knows exactly what she’s doing, she smirks and moves back a step when I give her my best ‘dinner lady’ stare, I added a Tut and a huff this morning because she and they annoyed me so much. I’ll flip one of these mornings and I’ll end up on the news.

Must also be a middle-aged-man invisibility cloak problem too as it happens to me. Worst offenders are packs of men on bicycles and groups of women with dogs.

SabrinaThwaite · Yesterday 13:09

Ditto the people that step off an escalator and don’t move or get just through a doorway and stop dead.

Screamingabdabz · Yesterday 13:10

YANBU. Whenever I go on a walk I end up raging about this. It’s my room 101 thing.

I find it’s usually couples who just assume the whole pavement is for them to walk side by side and you need to just make other arrangements.

Sheer dumb gormlessness. I’d love to have the courage to go up to one of them one day and ask how and why they don’t seem to have a thought in their head about what the other pedestrian is supposed to do.

Absolute selfish inconsiderate dicks.

MadnessInMyMethod · Yesterday 13:14

Not guilty, I don't have enough friends to fill a pavement 😄

HoldMyWine · Yesterday 13:14

Oh yes those couples who think that their relationship will end if they stop holding hands for 3 seconds

Heterosexual couples only.

I have never seen or heard of a lesbian or gay couple holding hands and blocking a path.

Tootsurly · Yesterday 13:16

Yes, this is very annoying. What I find even more staggering is the people who actively walk into your path.

This happened to me the other day when I was walking along the edge of the pavement in a straight line and needed to go between the front of the buildings and a lamp post. A woman coming towards me deviated sharply into my path and then looked at me in astonishment as if I'd landed from outer space.

Resealablestrip · Yesterday 13:18

I often think these people who are annoying/annoyed by the entire human race must live in entirely different world to me, and I suspect it's a much "naicer" MN world than the one I'm in, with higher levels of general entitlement (on both sides)?

I live and work in one of the pst disadvantaged communities in the country. This just doesn't happen, people move aside naturally, and on the odd occasion someone was distracted and needed a cheery "excuse me please" they'd move quickly with apologies.

If I need to walk past the local comp when groups of students are out and about, some one will shout "move you asshole" or similar, they're not talking to me, but affectionately telling their mate to move out of the way of "the lady".

HoppingPavlova · Yesterday 13:19

Not guilty, but just as annoying as facing them head on is being behind them when they are blocking the pavement and walking at a snails pace. As well as swaddling along, they stop here and there to look at something another is showing them or whatnot, and you are stuck and can’t get past without going right out on the road and around. Dicks. Utter dicks.

Tootsurly · Yesterday 13:19

Not quite the same thing, but also people (especially families) that get on the train/tube and treat it like it's their living room, spreading out, talking loudly, etc.

IChooseWine · Yesterday 13:20

Have you seen the point of view videos on YouTube from people with a guide dog?

Think you're enraged already? Watch them.
It's shocking.

Or people who somehow manage to take up the whole pavement all on their own by weaving around and holding their forearms at 90° to their body (sorry, but the latter is nearly always women).

psychodacat · Yesterday 13:29

This infuriates me as well. Through a quirk of moving house and staying at our old primary school, which finished slightly earlier than the one we'd moved nearer to, DD and I had to walk against the hometime tide of parents and children from the other primary school - the vast majority of whom would walk 4 or 5 abreast, with buggies. Or stop next to their car and take up the whole pavement whilst they fannied around getting into the car with the car door wide open blocking half the pavement.

Just have the tiniest bit of awareness or consideration that there are other people around!

I got a mouthful of abuse once for calling out to a group of people standing at the top of an escalator and blocking my DD from getting off. She was about 6 at the time and I was 3-4 steps back with younger DD. She had to step back and if I hadn't been there she could have easily fallen. I shouted "can you all move please" and apparently I was "fucking rude."
